Hypatia , the daughter of Theon of Alexandria, was born in about 370 AD. she is the earliest woman scientist whose works have been documented. As a young woman, she traveled to Athens and Italy. Upon her return to Alexandria, she became a philosopher and mathematician. She was appointed to expound the doctrines of Plato and Aristotle and was a noted lecturer on the subjects of mathematics, astronomy, philosophy, and mechanics. Most of her writings dealt with mathematics, especially algebra. Her most noted work, called Arithmetica, was a commentary on the writings of Diophantus. Hypatia also wrote an explanation of the geometry works of Apollonius of Perga, which was titled, On the Conics of Apollonius. Later in her career she worked with Theon and coauthored a work on Euclid's geometry which is titled Elements. In addition to her mathematical works, Hypatia also developed an apparatus for distilling water, an instrument for measuring the level of water, a plane astrolabe (for measuring the positions of the stars, planets, and sun) and a graduated brass hydrometer for determining the specific gravity of a liquid. Hypatia's philosophical beliefs were in conflict with the views of the Christian rulers of the city of Alexandria. When Cyril, a fanatical Christian, became Partiarch of Alexadria in 412 AD he began a persecution of scholars in the city. In 415 AD Hypatia was arrested, tortured and killed in the church called Caesarium. References Alic, M. (1986).

Hypatiabrilliant mathematician, eloquent Neoplatonist, and a woman renowned for her beautywas brutally murdered by a mob of Christians in Alexandria in 415. She has been a legend ever since. In this engrossing book, Maria Dzielska searches behind the legend to bring us the real story of Hypatia's life and death, and new insight into her colorful world. Historians and poets, Victorian novelists and contemporary feminists have seen Hypatia as a symbolof the waning of classical culture and freedom of inquiry, of the rise of fanatical Christianity, or of sexual freedom. Dzielska shows us why versions of Hypatia's legend have served her champions' purposes, and how they have distorted the true story. She takes us back to the Alexandria of Hypatia's day, with its Library and Museion, pagan cults and the pontificate of Saint Cyril, thriving Jewish community and vibrant Greek culture, and circles of philosophers, mathematicians, astronomers, and militant Christians. Drawing on the letters of Hypatia's most prominent pupil, Synesius of Cyrene, Dzielska constructs a compelling picture of the young philosopher's disciples and her teaching. Finally she plumbs her sources for the facts surrounding Hypatia's cruel death, clarifying what the murder tells us about the tensions of this tumultuous era. Maria Dzielska is an internationally recognized authority on the cultural life of the Roman Empire. She lives in Krakow and is Professor of Ancient Roman History at

Hypatia
In the four hundred and fifteenth year of the Common Era, in the city of Alexandria, a tragedy occurred that, according to those who write history, was so insignificant it has barely rated a mention in even the most extensive of historical records. However, this event was not only tragic for the individuals involved, but has had far-reaching consequences for anyone who has ever valued the importance of intellectual freedom and scientific enquiry.
Hypatia of Alexandria, a mathematician, was dragged from her carriage and savagely murdered by a Christian mob in 415CE. She is perhaps better remembered for how she died rather than the way in which she lived. However, Hypatia lived an extraordinary life as the pre-eminent mathematician, philosopher, astronomer and astrologer of her time.

My Hunt for Hypatia, Lady Philosopher of Alexandria
(b. 355 AD, d. 415 AD)
by Faith L. Justice
I first came across Hypatia's story in 1980 when I attended Judy Chicago's groundbreaking feminist art exhibit The Dinner Party . Chicago and her team selected thirty-nine subjects for an elaborate dinner party, where each "guest" was honored for contributions to womankind. In the accompanying book, Hypatia was described as a Roman scholar and philosopher who lived in Alexandria...a woman who stressed the importance of goddesses and the feminine aspects of culture. The article detailed the pagan philosopher's death in 415 AD at the hands of a Christian mob with the clear implication she was murdered because she was a woman as much as because she was a pagan. The Dinner Party came at a crucial point in my life. I had experienced discrimination at work and in the marketplace firsthand. I looked for role modelswomen who spoke out and lived their lives as they wanted, in spite of society's restrictions. The Dinner Party offered me a wealth of candidatesgoddesses, queens, literary lights. But something about Hypatia's story tugged at me. She was a scientist and mathematician in a time when woman had very few choices. She excelled and was recognized for her accomplishments. Her name came down to us through the ages, when so many women of talent remained nameless. That last fact added to the mystery, romance, and inherent drama of Hypatia's life and death. I wanted to know more.

Click here for audio of Episode 215. Today, we meet a great 4th-century mathematician. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. T he famous library in ancient Alexandria was what we'd call a museum or a university. It was the great center of learning and the storehouse of knowledge in the ancient world. A lady named Hypatia was born there in AD 370. Her father was a famous mathematician and the library's director. Hypatia was gifted in every way. She was beautiful, and her intellect was astonishing. That intellect was nurtured by the best minds in the land. And she was steered toward independence. "Reserve your right to think," her father said, "for even to think wrongly is better than not to think at all." Hypatia became a brilliant public speaker and scholar, and she followed her father on the library's faculty. There she wrote on mathematics and astronomy. She did work on algebraic equations and conic sections. She invented the astrolabe for ship navigation and devices for measuring the density of fluids. She was linked with several men, but she never married. She was too much the strong-minded public figure for that.

"In the starry expanse that has no dwellings: forces of the universe, interior virtues, harmonious union of earth and heaven that delights the mind and the ear and the eye, that offers an attainable ideal to all wise men and a visible splendor to the beauty of the soul."
Hypatia
(From a dramatic work by Leconte de Lisle, 1857) Hypatia of Alexandria: A Woman Before Her Time H ypatia of Alexandria was a woman of grace and eloquence, of beauty and wisdom. She was born before her time, and she died before her time. Regarded as the first woman astronomer, Hypatia was also an accomplished mathematician, an inventor, and a philosopher of Plato and Aristotle, She lived during the late 4th, early 5th centuriesa time of great change. Born in Alexandria, the exact year of Hypatia's birth is disputed. In the book by Maria Dzielska, Hypatia of Alexandria , the strongest argument is made for 355 A.D. as the year of her birth. In Charles Kingsley's 1928 historical novel of the same name, she was born in 390 A.D. Most sources, however, favor 370 A.D. Hypatia was raised by her father, Theon. There is little mentioned of her mother in any of the surviving records that document Hypatia's life.

Picture from The Mysterious Fayum Portraits: Faces from Ancient Egypt. When the Christians destroyed the Library of Alexandria under Theodosius in 391 and 396CE, the librarian was Theon (or variously Theron). We can imagine his and his daughter Hypatia's feelings as some 500 000 scrolls representing hundreds of years of collection and research were destroyed. This was a forerunner of the end of "The Golden Age". Many have argued that the death of Hypatia, only 25 years later introduced the real "dark ages" as the last light of reason was extinguished with her death. Certainly, due to the deliberate destruction of all things perceived as anti- or even, "not sufficiently pro-" Christian, we don't know very much about her, and of that, much of what we do know was written by her enemies. Yet she was such a btilliant beacon that even they could not entirely hide the fact that Hypatia was something quite exceptional. Nicephorus, Philostorgius and Socrates Scholasticus (who wrote an eccleciastical history in the 5th Century infra) mention her, and even these church apologists and manufacturers of pseudographica praised her characteristics and scholarship even as they damned her values. A few surviving letters by one of her former students who she taught neoplatonic ideas, Synesius of Cyrene (infra) and later Bishop of Ptolmais (who helped create the doctrine of the Trinity) provide some background and a few quotations, such as those used here.

Hypatia of Alexandria
A martyr to feminine intellect.
Born in Alexendria in A.D. 370, Hypatia came into a rarefied intellectual world. Her father, Theon, was a mathematician and astronomer at the Museum at Alexandria, and Hypatia was his prize pupil. She studied in Athens and Italy, and she became a lecturer and writer in the fields of mathematics, philosophy, astronomy and mechanics. Her classes were attended by students from throughout the known world, and her treatise on algebra, Arithmetica, was a thirteen-volume definitive study. Practical technology was Hypatia's main interest, which led to her invention of the pane astrolabe, used to measure the positions of the sun and stars and to calculate the ascendant sign of the zodiac. It consisted of a pair of rotating discs made of open-work metal, rotating one on top of the other around a removable peg. Hypatia perfected the device to the point where it could accurately solve problems in spherical astronomy. Hypatia never married, although she was courted by and kept company with many of Alexandria's movers and shakers. Unhappily, these connections did not save her from the fanatical Christian sects whose influence was becoming increasingly felt. During her lifetime, intellectualism gave way to findamentalism, and to religious dogma. In A.D. 389 the Serapeum Library was sacked and burned by order of Theophilos, bishop of Alexandria. All neo-Platonists were persecuted, and Hypatia became a controversial figure because of her fame and influence.

It considers Hypatia (Sophia Fox-Long), the 5th Century mathematician, pagan philosopher and inventor considered so inherently dangerous that Christian monks found it necessary to drag her through the streets of Alexandria, Egypt, before dismembering and then burning her body. Wellman's new play follows Hypatia's imaginary trajectory from that spectacle through 8th Century Byzantium and then on to the early 20th Century, when she wanders into Alexandria, Virginia and first lays eyes on a bicycle. With the wide-eyed innocence of a child, she trades her most valuable possession for the bike. And what possession is that? A pot of gold, perhaps? An Egyptian relic? No. It's the number zero (the cipher), the "mark of emptiness."
