The novels Antic Hay (1923) and Point Counter Point (1928), both of which illustrate the nihilistic temper of the 1920s, and Brave New World (1932), an ironic vision of a future utopia, established Huxley's fame. Aldous Huxley Brave New World Brave New World - Study Guide The Gioconda Smile Introduction
"That men do not learn very much from the lessons of history is the most important of all the lessons that history has to teach" ("Case of Voluntary Ignorance" (1959)) Aldous Leonard Huxley was born in 1894, in Godalming in Surrey to an intellectual family. He was the grandson of Thomas Henry Huxley, the famous biologist and colleague of Darwin. He was also the great-nephew of Matthew Arnold, the brother of scientist and writer Julian Huxley, and the nephew of the best-selling novelist Mrs Humphry Ward. He attended Eton, during which time his mother died and he developed a serious disease of the eyes that left him partially blind for the rest of his life. These circumstances left the young Huxley unable to pursue the career in medicine as he had intended and instead he took a degree in English Literature at Balliol College, Oxford. During the war, he got to know a number of literary figures including Lady Ottoline Morrell. Huxley became a journalist in 1919, having already published three books of poetry, writing for the

Here and Now! Aldous Huxley, Consciousness and The Alexander Technique by Robert Rickover In his final novel, Island , Aldous Huxley wrote about the adventures of a shipwrecked Englishman on Pala, an imaginary island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. The society on this island had evolved to the point where there was universal economic and social well-being and a high level of respect for individual rights and freedoms. Moreover, individuals were given every opportunity to develop emotionally and spiritually. Huxley was very tall and awkward and subject to fatigue, insomnia and a weak stomach. He was deathly afraid to speak in public. By the time he met Alexander, he was virtually bed-ridden, reduced to writing lying down with his typewriter resting on his chest. I believe the mynah birds of Island were inspired by his work with the Alexander Technique. Alexander teachers help people recognize and change harmful tension habits. This requires being present - not mentally wandering off into the past or the future. For an Alexander Teacher, helping students be consciously aware of themselves in the moment is a crucially important first step in their learning process. And not always an easy one. We are bombarded with external tasks and distractions that draw our attention away from our own mental and physical state. More often than not, our work requires an outward focusing of attention on specific tasks, projects and co-workers. Our leisure time, too, is frequently spent on activities like driving, shopping, and watching TV - all of which tend to pull our attention away from ourselves.

Spent a year researching parapsychology at Stanford University. After leaving Stanford, he became a clinical psychologist, and worked at the Veterans Administration hospital studying the causes of schizophrenia. He also worked with LSD at the Mental Research Institute in Palo Alto, under grants from the National Institute of Mental Health. This was during the time that NIHM was channelling funds for the CIA's MK-ULTRA LSD experiments, so it is safe to say that Adams was working, directly or indirectly, for the CIA, although I don't know if he was aware of it (most researchers weren't). Adams himself took LSD as part of these studies, and suffered two psychotic episodes, the second of which earned him a stay in a mental hospital.

Acting and Actors
A bused as we abuse it at present, dramatic art is in no sense cathartic; it is merely a form of emotional masturbation. It is the rarest thing to find a player who has not had his character affected for the worse by the practice of his profession. Nobody can make a habit of self-exhibition, nobody can exploit his personality for the sake of exercising a kind of hypnotic power over others, and remain untouched by the process.
Beauty
B eauty for some provides escape, who gain a happiness in eyeing the gorgeous buttocks of the ape or Autumn sunsets exquisitely dying.
Brotherhood
T he brotherhood of men does not imply their equality. Families have their fools and their men of genius, their black sheep and their saints, their worldly successes and their worldly failures. A man should treat his brothers lovingly and with justice, according to the deserts of each. But the deserts of every brother are not the same.
Death and Dying
I gnore death up to the last moment; then, when it can't be ignored any longer, have yourself squirted full of morphia and shuffle off in a coma. Thoroughly sensible, humane and scientific, eh?

Born: 7/26/1894 England
Died: 11/22/1963 About the Author
An extraordinary man in an extraordinary age, writer Aldous Leonard Huxley (1894-1963) brought to his work a strong sense of the world into which he was born amid the rarefied privilege of a distinguished English family transformed by a wicked, probing intelligence and a restless soul.
Huxley's grandfather was the eminent biologist and writer Thomas Huxley, who helped Darwin realize the theory of evolution, and his mother was the niece of the poet Matthew Arnold. (Huxley's brother Julian also became an esteemed writer and their half-brother Andrew won a 1963 Nobel Prize in physiology.) When vision problems dashed his hopes of studying medicine, Huxley turned to writing and became associated with the magazine Aetheneum. He enjoyed success early, poking fun at the pretensions of society in such satirical novels as Crome Yellow and Antic Hay. As a young man, he spent considerable time in the finest intellectual company Virginia Woolf, John Maynard Keynes, Bertrand Russell and by his early 30s was one of England's most important new writers.
