The New Negro Opportunity The New Negro A giant of a brown-skinned man sauntered up the one street of the Village and out into the palmetto thickets with a small pretty woman clinging lovingly to his arm. All the loungers in the store tried to walk to the door with an air of nonchalance but with small success. A round-shouldered figure in overalls much too large, came nervously in the door and the talking ceased. The men looked at each other and winked. Elijah nudged Walter and turned with mock gravity to the new-comer. Joe started and all but dropped the bottle he held in his hands. He swallowed several times painfully and his lips trembled. He reached deep down into his trouser pocket and drew out a hollow ground razor, large and shiny, and passed his moistened thumb back and forth over the edge. Joe Kanty laid down a nickel and stumbled out into the street. II But Joe Kanty never came back, never. The men in the store heard the sharp report of a pistol somewhere distant in the palmetto thicket and soon Spunk came walking leisurely, with his big black Stetson set at the same rakish angle and Lena clinging to his arm, came walking right into the general store. Lena wept in a frightened manner. The men glared at Elijah, accusingly.

Zora Neale Hurston: A Literary Life
This article was written by Michelle Potter Zora Neale Hurston "It was the time for sitting on porches beside the road. It was the time to hear things and talk."
Their Eyes Were Watching God Zora Neale Hurston was the fifth of eight children born to John Hurston, a carpenter, and Lucy Potts Hurston, a former school teacher. Hurston grew up in Eatonville, a small town 10 miles northeast of Orlando, Florida. She frequently fudged her birthdate as 1901, but most scholars believe she was born in 1891.
Eatonville, known as the "the first incorporated African American municipality in the United States," was the small-town foundation for Hurston's literary growth. She spent her early years sitting on the porch of Joe Clarke's store, listening to the men swap stories. This image of an African American town that thrives through storytelling is one that occurs in much of Hurston's work. Today, the Association to Preserve the Eatonville Community works to promote the town's literary heritage. Every year, on the last weekend in January, Eatonville hosts the Zora Neale Hurston Festival of the Arts and Humanities. More than 100,000 people attend the speeches, street festival, educational presentations, artistic competitions, and awards banquets that have Eatonville spilling over with African American pride and culture during this celebration.

    Zora Neale Hurston
An author who died in poverty in 1960, Zora Neale Hurston now holds a posthumous reputation which she herself might not have imagined. Her best-known novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937), has sold over 50,000 copies in the past decade, and more of her work is in print now than at any period during her lifetime. A writer who never earned appreciable royalties on any of her books, Hurston understood the vagaries of literary fortune: “I have been in sorrow’s kitchen and licked out all the pots. Then I have stood on the peaky mountain wrapped in rainbows, with a harp and a sword in my hands.”
Why should this particular woman have such an impact? For two reasons. Her life illustrates the folk wisdom of Hurston’s mother, who told her daughter to “jump at de sun. You might not land on the sun, but at least you’ll get off the ground.” At the same time, her work celebrates black culture, and leads us to an appreciation of the courage and humor, art and intellect, life and society, of black people living in the rural South in the early decades of the twentieth century—men and women who didn’t jump at the sun so much as labor under its rays from “can” in the morning till “can’t” at night.

    Classroom Issues and Strategies
While there are no particular difficulties in teaching Hurston, some students find the dialect hard to understand. To address this problem, I usually read several passages aloud to help students get a "feel" for the voices. Once they've heard Hurston read aloud, they can create her characters' speech in their minds so that it is understandable.

Return to Homepage Course Description In this junior pro-seminar for English majors, you will read, research, and write about the dynamic, enigmatic work of Zora Neale Hurston, one of the most important American writers of the early twentieth century. A member of the Harlem Renaissance, Hurston was trained as an anthropologist, collected folklore in Florida and the Caribbean, and wrote novels, plays, and short stories alongside her scholarly books and articles on the folktales and songs of New World Africans. Despite success during her lifetime, she died in obscurity. Hurston's work was recuperated in the 1970s after Alice Walker stumbled upon one of her novels. The revival of Hurston's work is still unfolding. There is a national conference on Hurston each year, a play about her life, and most recently, the discovery of several unpublished dramas in the Library of Congress rare manuscript collection, one of which we will read. You will read several of Hurston's primary works, including her famous novel

When Hurston lived there, Eatonville was one of the rare all-black towns - and is still 89% African American. Forced to leave school at the age of thirteen to take care of siblings, she was still able to get an associates degree from Howard University and to receive a B.A. degree in anthropology from Barnard. She did graduate work at Columbia University. H er c areers included employment as an actress, maid, librarian, and college professor. However, she is best known for her work as a writer and folklorist. She was one of the most important authors of the Harlem Renaissance Movement, a major Black literary and cultural movement in New York's Harlem during the 1920's . The Harlem Renaissance movement stimulated pride and confidence in Black life and culture. Among the talented writers, musicians, playwrights, etc, congregated in Harlem at this time were Langston Hughes, Josephine Baker, Eubie Blake, and James Weldon Johnson.
