The great romantic painter, Delacroix, wrote to Victor Hugo that, had he decided to become a painter instead of a writer, he would have outshone the artists of their century.
Many of Hugo's paintings have survived. One recognizes in them accomplished draughtsmanship, boldness of execution and a sense of powerful creativity. Today his artwork still has the power to astonish us by the skill, the strong composition, and often by theatrical effects of light and shade which seem to have been achieved by the poet-draughtsman under a direct spell of inspiration.

Hugh of St. Victor
Medieval philosopher theologian , and mystical writer; b. 1096, at the manor of Hartingham in Saxony ; d. 11 March, 1141. The works of Derling and of Hugonin leave no doubt that Mabillon was mistaken in declaring his birthplace to be Ypres in Flanders . He was the eldest son of Conrad, Count of Blankenburg. His uncle, Reinhard who had studied in Paris under William of Champeaux , had on his return to Saxony been made Bishop of Halberstadt. It was in the monastery of St. Pancras, at Hamerleve near Halberstadt, that Hugh received his education . In spite of the opposition of his parents , he took the habit of the Canons Regular of St. Augustine at Hamerleve; before his novitiate was completed, the disturbed state of the country led his uncle to advise him to go to the monastery of St. Victor in Paris , where he arrived about 1115. William of Champeaux , its founder, on his reputation for piety and learning. Under his rule and guidance Hugh spent the rest of his life, studying, teaching, and writing. On the tragic death of Thomas (20 Aug., 1133) Hugh was chosen to succeed him as head of the School of St. Victor

Victor Hugo and the north
In France he was better known as popular poet and political thinker - many towns have a street named after him.

Early publications 1820-1830
He turned to writing, and published his first book of poetry in 1821, a novel in 1825, and an epic stage play about Cromwell in 1828. He and his friends were were devotees of "Romanticism". Though Hugo moved to the left politically in later life, this almost fantasy way of looking at personal lives and dramas played out against an historical backdrop remained typical of his work. His early publications gained royal approval and a pension from the far-right French king Charles X, but he soon fell foul of the regime's strict censorship. As in Shakespeare's England, writers who wanted to explore political issues often wrote about historical situations, expecting the audience to understand when a reference to current affairs was intended. This was enough to have the censor ban a stage play Hugo set in the Middle Ages, which was seen as critical of a royal ancestor, Louis XIII.

Hugo, a distinguished soldier in Napoleon Han d'Islande , was given to the press; his second, Bug-Jargal , appeared three years later. In 1827 he published the great dramatic poem of Cromwell , a masterpiece at all points except that of fitness for the modern stage. Two years afterwards he published Les Orientales , a volume of poems so various in style, so noble in spirit, so perfect in workmanship, in music and in form, that they might alone suffice for the foundation of an immortal fame. In the course of nine years, from 1831 to 1840, he published Les Feuilles d'automne and Les Rayons et les ombres That their author was one of the greatest elegiac and lyric poets ever born into the world, any one of these volumes would amply suffice to prove. During his life which spanned from 1802 to 1885, Victor Hugo was the French author of seven novels, 21 plays, 18 volumes of poetry, and roughly 3 million words of history, criticism, travel writing and philosophy. Politics At different stages of his life he was a militant monarchist and a revolutionary socialist. He coined the phrase 'The United States of Europe' which, as phrases go, was a dismal failure, but the idea was extremely catchy and, over a 100 years after his death, the European Union was born. Hugo was elected as a Representative of Paris in 1848. On 2 December, 1851, he woke up to the news that there had been a coup d'etat. Sixteen Representatives had been arrested while they slept and had been sent to prison. The National Assembly was occupied by troops. Hugo's quarter was one of the few to erect barricades.
