24. Victor Hugo (1802-1885)
Biography of French poet, dramatist and novelist victor hugo, plus links to purchase all of his works currently in print.
http://www.imagi-nation.com/moonstruck/clsc90.html
VICTOR HUGO "IN a truly great dramatist the situations spring from the characters, but in Hugo's plays, as in Calderon 's and Corneille 's, the situation dominates the characters." This fault will be found alike in Hugo's first produced play, Cromwell , which appeared when its author was only twenty-five years old, and his two greatest stage successes, Hernani and Ruy Blas . The critic remarks further: "The situation in Hernani is strained and dramatically unreal, the sentiment is mawkish, the oratory grandiloquent; but a throbbing life and intensely expressed emotion maintain the interest, though this is a lyric rather than a dramatic one." The same might be said of Ruy Blas . Yet these two dramas are still played in France and go far toward explaining Hugo's contemporary popularity. Hugo's father was an officer in the French army, and most of his early life was spent in Paris with the exception of a year in Madrid where his father's military duties had taken him. This youthful experience left its imprint both on Hernani and Ruy Blas Hugo's interest in literature began young. In his early teens he was already entering poetical contests and was occasionally successful. At seventeen he founded a fortnightly journal which, however, was short-lived. At nineteen he wrote a play

  • Return to Top Victor Hugo Hugo was born in Besancon in southern France in 1802. His father was a Bonapartist General, his mother a strong monarchist. Hugo was something of a child prodigy as a poet, turning out translations of Latin and Greek when he was thirteen, winning prizes when he was in his teens, and by the time he was twenty, a poet with not merely a reputation, but regarded as pretty much France's greatest living poet. At fourteen he said, "I want to be Chateaubriand or nothing." Three years later Chateaubriand himself was calling Hugo that "enfant sublime". By 1823 he had received Royal pensions for his writings. He came to Paris, and fell under the influence of Charles Nodier (himself an early romantic) and the first Cenacle. He saw the English players and like many of the Romantics, was influenced for the rest of his life by the experience. With Dumas he became the leader of the Romantic movement in the theatre. In 1827, he published his play Cromwell , and the yet more influential, Preface to Cromwell In that Preface he developed his theatrical ideas which he derived from Shakespeare of mixing the grotesque with the sublime. His next play

Hatching from a nameless gleam of light I see
    Monstrous flowers and frightening roses
I feel that out of duty I write all these things
That seem, on the lurid, trembling parchment,
To issue sinisterly from the shadow of my hand.
Is it by chance, great senseless breath
Of the Prophets, that you perturb my thoughts?
So where am I being drawn in this nocturnal azure?
Is it sky I see? Am I in command?
Darkness, am I fleeing? Or am I in pursuit?
Everything gives way. At times I do not know if I am The proud horseman or the fierce horse; I have the scepter in my hand and the bit in my mouth. Open up and let me pass, abysses, blue gulf, Black gulf! Be silent, thunder! God, where are you leading me? I am the will, but I am the delirium. Oh, flight into the infinite! Vainly I sometimes say, Like Jesus calling out "Lamma Sabacthani," Is the way still long? Is it finished, Lord? Will you soon let me sleep? The Spirit does what it will. I feel the gusting breath That Elisha felt, that lifted him; And in the night I hear someone commanding me to go!

    by Roderick T. Long
In December 1851, French President Louis Bonaparte – the future Emperor Napoléon III – seized power in a coup d’état , in violation of his oath to uphold the Constitution. He arrested the legislature; imprisoned, deported, or executed his political opponents; and deterred future dissent by massacring civilians in the streets. When he was done he held a referendum on his coup, and announced that the voters had vindicated his actions by a vote of approximately 7,500,000 to 640,000. Bonaparte’s argument, in effect, was that 7.5 million Frenchmen can’t be wrong. In 1852 the liberal writer and former legislator Victor Hugo responded, from exile, with a book titled Napoléon the Little , the first of his many broadsides against the new régime. After casting doubt on the freedom of the elections and the genuineness of the official figures, Hugo added that even if the plebiscite had been procedurally flawless, an electoral majority had no competence to authorise Bonaparte’s crimes. Hugo’s magnificent analysis is worth quoting at some length – both for its virtues and for its flaws: You were captain of artillery at Berne, Monsieur Louis Bonaparte; you have necessarily a tincture of algebra and geometry. Here are some axioms of which you have probably an idea.

STUDY GUIDE KIDS CLUB SCHOOLS SCHOOLS EDITION ABOUT VICTOR HUGO Victor Hugo's enormously successful career covered most of the nineteenth century and spanned both the Romantic and Realistic movements. A great poet, novelist, playwright, essayist, pamphleteer, diarist, politician, and moralist, Hugo was a man of immense passion and endless contradictions. Hugo was born on February 26, 1802. His father, General Joseph Leopold Hugo, was the son of a carpenter who rose through the ranks of Napoleon's citizen army. However, Victor's mother decided not to subject her three sons to the difficulties of army life, and settled in Paris to raise them. Madame Hugo became the mistress of her husband's commanding officer, General Lahorie, who was a father figure to Hugo and his brothers until the General's execution in 1812. Victor was an excellent student who excelled in mathematics, physics, philosophy, French literature, Latin, and Greek. He won first place in a national poetry contest when he was 17. As a teenager, he fell in love with a neighbour's daughter, Adele Foucher. However, his mother discouraged the romance, believing that her son should marry into a finer family. When his mother died in 1821, Victor refused to accept financial help from his father. He lived in abject poverty for a year, but then won a pension of 1,000 francs a year from Louis XVIII for his first volume of verse. Barely out of his teens, Hugo became a hero to the common people as well as a favorite of heads of state. Throughout his lifetime, he played a major role in France's political evolution from dictatorship to democracy.
