Poet Ted Hughes dies

Ted Hughes: Kept his illness a secret
One of Britain's most admired literary figures, the Poet Laureate, Ted Hughes, has died aged 68. He was acclaimed for the intense images he evoked of the English countryside and the savagery of the animal world. Poet Al Alvarez: "A greatly significant poet" Mr Hughes death follows an 18-month battle against cancer, his publishers Faber and Faber said. He died peacefully at home in Devon on Tuesday. He had kept his cancer battle a secret from all but those very close to him. ... The ever reclusive Hughes had chosen not to defend himself against a storm of abuse from fans of Syliva Plath. He made few public appearances and, until the publication of Birthday Letters, made no comment on his six-year marriage. Sylvia Plath: Committed suicide Sylvia Plath gassed herself in an oven on 11 February, 1963, soon after Mr Hughes left her for another woman. Some Plath admirers called him a murderer and his name has been hacked off of her gravestone in Yorkshire, northern England, several times.

THIS book is not a biography in disguise, says Christopher Reid, with something like the literary equivalent of pursed lips. It is the story of Ted Hughes, the writer, told through his (Reid's) judicious selection of Hughes's letters. "If I could not find at least a twofold reason for including a letter not on some overtly literary topic, then I would decide to drop it." Some biographical material does get caught up in the story, he concedes - especially the tragic "episodes" of the suicide of Sylvia Plath in 1963 and the suicide of Assia Wevill and murder of her and Hughes's daughter, Shura, six years later in 1969. "The main thrust, however, is from project to project, from book to book."

Sylvia Plath, 'Ariel'
If a man's wife commits suicide he attracts and, in most cases deserves, sympathy and support; for his next partner to go on to do the same thing (and take the life of their child at the same time), only six years later, inevitably leads to suspicions about his character and deserves investigation.
Unfortunately, by virtue of being both a man and a talented writer, Ted Hughes' indiscretions and contributions towards the suicides of Sylvia Plath and Assia Welville have been largely confined to the feminist lobby and, as a result, been given short shrift. As one writer put it: "He was a great man and nothing was said or done to disturb the aura around him." When Ted Hughes used to give readings he would often be confronted by demonstrators holding placards which accused him of murdering Sylvia Plath. Plath's grave in Yorkshire has repeatedly been desecrated with the letters ‘Hughes’ hacked off her name on the headstone. The recent revelations about her husband’s philanderous behaviour and lack of faithfulness to any of his wives are sure to incite haters of Hughes even further. A new book has been published which exposes yet more womanising by Hughes, names another mistress of his, and suggests he fathered a fourth, unacknowledged child.

‘It is occasionally possible, just for brief moments, to find the words that will unlock the doors of all those many mansions in the head and express something – perhaps not much, just something – of the crush of information that presses in on us from the way a crow flies over and the way a man walks and the look of a street and from what we did one day a dozen years ago. Words that will express something of the deep complexity that makes us precisely the way we are " - From: Poetry in the Making

In his personal life, the British Poet Laureate, who died Wednesday at age 68, often seemed visited by a similar kind of cruel senselessness. His first wife, Sylvia Plath, killed herself in 1963, leaving him to raise their two children. At the time, Hughes was having an affair with Assia Wevill, who in 1969 also killed herself and their child. Over the years, the particulars of Hughes' tragic life took on an almost mythological dimension, one that threatened to overshadow his poetry. Relentlessly attacked by critics, especially feminists, who found him hardhearted some of them even blamed Hughes for Plath's death he fought diligently for his and his children's privacy. For 34 years he refused to discuss Plath's suicide, and it seemed he would carry his feelings about his former wife and writing companion to the grave. But this past January, aware that he was dying of cancer, Hughes finally spoke, in an extraordinary and extraordinarily intimate collection of poems, "Birthday Letters." In his

Read chapter 1 I n the foreword to the Journals of Sylvia Plath , Ted Hughes wrote, in 1982, "I destroyed [the last of her journals] because I did not want her children to have read it (in those days I regarded forgetfulness as an essential part of survival)." This act always seemed to me an unforgivable betrayal, both of Plath herself and of her contribution to the literary world, since the journal that Hughes destroyed would probably have been written around the same time as Plath's most significant poems. I wondered whether his decision wasn't a little selfish: did he have a sense of the potential public importance of the document he destroyed, or had he thought only of his own well-being? Now, with the publication of Birthday Letters , we have, for the first time, a collection of Ted Hughes' poems about Sylvia Plath, written in the years since her suicide in 1963. The eighty-eight poems in the volume, with their constant allusions to Plath's poems and journals, leave no trace of doubt that Hughes has treated Plath's work with an almost religious respect. More importantly, they show that Hughes has become a master navigator of the no-man's-land between public and private in poetry.

    Ted Hughes Poetry Trail
The new Ted Hughes Poetry Trail was officially opened on the 4th May 2006 by Councillor Des Shadrick, Chairman of Devon County Council in the presence of Carol Hughes. The Ted Hughes Poetry Trail has been created at Stover Country Park to celebrate his poetry and long-standing links with Devon. Visitors to the Trail can read examples of Hughes' finest poems relating to the natural world. These poems have been chosen with the help of Carol Hughes to relate to the wildlife to be seen and heard around the Country Park. The Park features sixteen specially-designed 'poetry posts', each displaying a poem by Ted Hughes on a theme relating to the natural world. There is also a short Children's Poetry Trail which lets families share together some of Ted Hughes' most memorable poems about the world of animals, some of which are illustrated by Raymond Briggs.

The poems in Howls and Whispers are similar to the Birthday Letters poems but somewhat more personal and private. This book offers an opportunity to get all of Hughes' poetry, including poems that only appeared in magazines and newspapers but were not included in previous collections. Highly recommended! If stodgy and old-fashioned are what you call Greek tragedy, you haven't read the posthumously published adaptations by Ted Hughes . Poet laureate to Queen Elizabeth II and husband of Sylvia Plath , Hughes died in 1998 at the age of 68. His estate published his translation and adaptation of Euripides' Alcestis in 1999. Euripides' Alcestis , rendered into Hughes' modern idiom, tells the timeless story of conflicts between public and private values, selfishness and filial relations, while retelling myths about Prometheus, Heracles' labors, and the sacrifice the best of women, Alcestis, made for her undeserving husband, King Admetos. Admetos has been marked for death, but arranges (with Apollo's help) for a stay, in exchange for the sacrifice of another human being. Since no one but his wife will volunteer, Death takes Alcestis.
