Poet Laureate 1 Aspinall Street, Mytholmroyd, West Yorkshire, where Ted Hughes was born. Edward James Hughes OM 17 August 28 October ) was an English poet and children's writer , known as Ted Hughes . Critics routinely rank him as one of the best poets of his generation. Hughes was British Poet Laureate from 1984 until his death. His funeral was attended by many relatives and fans; also attending were several celebrities, including Seamus Heaney.
Ted Hughes was married from 1956 to 1963 to the American poet Sylvia Plath , who committed suicide in 1963 at the age of 30. His part in the relationship became controversial, to some feminists and (particularly) US admirers of Plath, who even accused him of murder. Hughes himself never publicly entered the debate, but his last poetic work, Birthday Letters (1998), explored their complex relationship, and to many, put him in a significantly better light. In 2003 he was portrayed by British actor Daniel Craig in Sylvia , a biographical film of Sylvia Plath.

Ted Hughes (1930-1998) - byname of Edward J. Hughes English poet, dramatist, critic, and short story writer, married to the American poet Sylvia Plath , who committed suicide in 1963. Hughes stated that poems, like animals, are each one 'an assembly of living parts, moved by a single spirit.' In his early works Hughes questioned man's function in the universal scheme. Seriously interested in shamanism, hermeticism, astrology, and the Ouija board, Hughes examined in several of his later animal poems the themes of survival and the mystery and destructiveness of the cosmos. SNOWDROP
Now is the globe shrunk tight
Round the mouse's dulled wintering heart
Weasel and crow, as if moulded in brass,
Move through an outer darkness
Not in their right minds,
With the other deaths. She, too, pursues her ends, Brutal as the stars of this month, Her pale head heavy as metal.
Edward J. Hughes was born in Mytholmroyd, Yorkshire, but raised in Mexborough, a coal-mining town in South Yorkshire. The harsh landscape of the northern England moors had a strong influence in Hughes's poetry. His parents were warm-hearted people - his mother was famous for her jams and gooseberry pies; his father was a carpenter, who later turned news agent. He had participated during World War I in the battle of Gallipoli, and was one of the 17 who survived from his regiment.

The British Library is one of the best resources in the world for studying the work of the English poet and children's writer Ted Hughes (1930-1998). Within Modern British Collections these include first and later editions of his poetry and prose, as well as critical studies, biographies, and literary journals in which his work is discussed. The Library also holds manuscripts and sound recordings by or about Hughes.
The Library's printed collection is especially strong in fine press work, a medium Hughes found attractive. English presses featuring Hughes include the Rainbow Press and the Morrigu Press, but perhaps the most significant are the American editions produced by the Gehenna Press. For the Gehenna, Hughes worked in close collaboration with the artist and printer Leonard Baskin, and their friendship and artistic association spanned decades. (1998; shelfmark: Cup.512.b.150) is a particularly important example of a Gehenna book: this limited edition contains poems held back from the autobiographical

  • The Hawk in the Rain ' Reviewed by W.S. Merwin
"They are unmistakably a young man's poems, which accounts for some of their defects as well as some of their strength and brilliance. And Mr. Hughes has the kind of talent that makes you wonder more than commonly where he will go from here, not because you can't guess but because you venture to hope."
  • From the Life and Songs of Crow
"Ted Hughes has written a strange, eerie powerful set of poems that stand unmatched in their singular quality. . . . The effect of the book is chilling: there is not a single warm emotion in it. The language is violent, colors are stark, the imagery reduces humans to their animal status."
  • Selected Poems 1957-1967
"Hughes is a difficult poet to love (he asks for none) but he is there at the front of contemporary poetry, where the pickaxes clink and the mine is extended; and, at whatever cost of increasing uglification, he has helped keep imagination grand."
