In 1926 Langston Hughes became a central figure in the Harlem Renaissance with the appearance of The Weary Blues, a volume of verse. Critics sometimes faulted him for dwelling on negative aspects of the African American experience. But in much of Hughes' work, there is an optimism rising above unpleasant realities: "I am the darker brother, / They send me to eat in the Kitchen / When company comes. / But I laugh . . . and grow strong." This photograph was the work of Carl Van Vechten, who was among the first members of the white literary establishment to recognize the cultural importance of the Harlem Renaissance. 64. "The Weary Blues" By Langston Hughes
Summary The speaker of langston hughes s The Weary Blues describes an evening of listening to a blues musician in Harlem.
http://cai.ucdavis.edu/uccp/workingweary.html
The Weary Blues Langston Hughes 1 Droning a drowsy syncopated tune, 2 Rocking back and forth to a mellow croon 3 I heard a Negro play. Down on Lenox Avenue the other night 5 By the pale dull pallor of an old gas light 6 He did a lazy sway .... 7 He did a lazy sway .... 8 To the tune o' those Weary Blues. 9 With his ebony hands on each ivory key 10 He made that poor piano moan with melody. 11 O Blues! Swaying to and fro on his rickety stool 13 He played that sad raggy tune like a musical fool. 14 Sweet Blues! 15 Coming from a black man's soul. 16 O Blues! 17 In a deep song voice with a melancholy tone 18 I heard that Negro sing, that old piano moan 19 "Ain't got nobody in all this world, Ain't got nobody but ma self 21 I's gwine to quit ma frownin' 22 And put ma troubles on the shelf."

Langston Hughes
A Study of His Poetry for Elementary Students Victoria Baumann
Fort Pitt Elementary School
Rationale Objective
This unit was conceived from that goal. The objective is to raise achievement by raising interest and participation. If students remain actively engaged in reading, and respond to that reading through writing and discussion, their skill level will increase. Overview This curriculum unit is designed as an author study of Langston Hughes and a genre study of Poetry. The reading level and activities are geared toward intermediate primary or middle school (4 th through 8 th Grades ). A Literacy Block that allows time for writing and reading instruction is recommended. The Language Arts instruction is designed in a two and a half-hour block. During this Literacy Block students engage in word study (phonics, Spelling and grammar), group/individual reading, oral reading, pair reading, author study, genre study, and writing instruction. Writer’s Workshop consists of a mini-lesson, student writing time and share time. Students utilize a writer’s notebook and folder to collect their writing. The mini lesson is designed to enable students to use their own writing as practice for grammar and craft. Through their writer’s notebook and folder, students continually revisit their own work. When a new skill such as "repetition" or "strong beginnings" is introduced in the mini lesson students can use their own work as the blueprint. They can examine their pieces and identify the need for revision, using the mini lesson as their focus.

I. Introduction
Over the past two years, while participating in the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute, I have written extensive units detailing the lives and creations of the Wright Brothers and Edward Hopper. When I set out to research these folks, I decided to read as much as possible about them from their childhood to their formative years, and then to accompany them through their great achievements. With this pattern in mind, I decided to read Langston Hughes, never realizing the monumental literary portfolio that this gentleman produced. His literary accomplishments are well represented through his poetry, his fiction, and his drama. His short stories were written utilizing a character named Jesse B. Simple, a universal, charming figure within whom we all can see a little bit of ourselves, usually in a humorous and honest capacity. His poetry often conveyed serious messages. Although his story was seldom pleasant, he told it with understanding and with hope. His novels, especially Not Without Laughter

Langston Hughes – The Black Poet Laureate
Langston Hughes was born in Joplin, Missouri in 1902. His mother was a school teacher and poet while his father, James Nathaniel Hughes, was a shopkeeper. After his parents separated his mother migrated from city to city looking for work, dragging young Langston behind to such places as Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Indiana and New York. He also lived part of the time with his grandmother, Mary Langston.
At the age of 13, Langston Hughes moved back in with his mother and her second husband. They moved to Cleveland, Ohio where young Langston would discover the free verse of Carl Sandburg, who would become an influence. Other early influences included Walt Whitman, Paul Lawrence Dunbar and Claude McKay. Due to his early development in writing style, his eighth grade class elected him as their class poet.
After graduating high school he moved to Mexico and in 1921 returned to the States to write “The Negro Speaks of Rivers,” which was published in

Laura Bush likes Langston Hughes; why doesn't James Taranto?
In the May 24 edition of his "Best of the Web Today" column, The Wall Street Journal 's OpinionJournal.com editor, James Taranto wrote : "Langston Hughes, the poet who inspired John Kerry's new campaign slogan, 'Let America be America again,' turns out to be a favorite of communists." In his zeal to conflate Senator John Kerry with communism, Taranto ignored the greater cultural context of Hughes's work including winning the Witter Bynner Prize and a Guggenheim Fellowship and, of course, his pivotal role in the Harlem Renaissance . First Lady Laura Bush even recited a Hughes poem at a 2002 White House event, describing the Renaissance as follows: The Harlem Renaissance brought great change to American letters and it broadened the influence of literature and social commentary. The legacy of the Harlem Renaissance spans decades and generations. We recognize and appreciate it today, in our society and in works of contemporary writers. In February 2001, President George W. Bush cited Langston Hughes as one of the writers "that inspire us" in a
