Cart Welcome to our website, specializing in materials for design/building professionals and in "things German". Holiday Greeetings! Our shop was asked to be the bookstore for The Third International Architectural Paint Research Conference to be held January 17-19, 2008 at Columbia University in New York City (http://www.aprconference.us). We’ll be exhibiting our inventory of 20 linear feet of scarce paint books for this crowd of paint professionals from all over the world. Also in January is an old favorite of ours, the Greater Philadelphis Old House Fair and Designer Craftsman shows, held each January in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania (http://www.goodrichpromotions.com/historic_home/index.html). As always, we’ll be the bookstore, featuring titles on historic preservation, antiques reference and books for the building trades and professions. We hope to see many of you there. We still have our bricks-and-mortar bookshop just north of Boston. If you're in the Boston area, call (978-664-6455) and stop by to browse through the hundreds of linear feet of books for the traditional building lover.

"The End of the World", Richard Huelsenbeck
wood s lot wishes happy birthday to dada-ist Richard Huelsenbeck, and so do I. The passages he quotes give a good sense of the anger underneath the nonsense and free association, but my favorite poem of his is the moving "The End of the World" . Here's the whole thing:
The cows sit on the telegraph poles and play chess
The cockatoo under the skirts of the Spanish dancer
Sings as sadly as a headquaters bugler and the cannon lament all day
That is the lavender landscape Herr Mayer was talking about
when he lost his eye
Only the fire department can drive the nightmare from the drawing-
room but all the hoses are broken
Ah yes Sonya they all take the celluloid doll for a changeling
and shout: God save the King
The whole Monist Club is gathered on the steamship Meyerbeer But only the pilot has any conception of high C I pull the anatomical atlas out of my toe a serious study begins Have you seen the fish that have been standing in front of the opera in cutaways for the last two days and nights...?

Huelsenbeck, Richard
Deutscher Schriftsteller.

The Dada Almanac by Richard Huelsenbeck, Barbara Wright (Translator), James Kirkup (Translator) About this title: "Dada Means Nothing!" So proclaimed Tristan Tzara, the movement's tireless publicist. Yet this did not prevent the most fanatical and talented artists and writers across Europe from rushing to join its ranks. Anti-war, anti-art, anti-dada, from its beginnings in Zurich during the first World War the dadas swept aside the cultural, philosophical and political norms of their time. Utter disgust with a society that had created the war (and then expected to survive the peace) spurred them to ever greater demonstrations of revulsion and derision. Yet it was not all nihilism: many factions worked ... read more Note: This is a general synopsis. Each listing is further described below.

Our Story So Far
The original Ridgefield Gazook was a four-page hand-drawn newsletter, written and edited by Man Ray, who was working out of Ridgefield, N.J., an artist's colony. It consisted of four pages of nonsense graphics, puns and illustrations. Only a single number (Number 0) appeared, dated March 31, 1915. This second number does not attempt to recreate the spirit of the first. I liked the title, its pre-Dada origins, and the fact it was created with home-grown, All-American, irreverent, nonsensical Dada spirit. Ridgefield, N.J. Single copies fifty cents. Sophie Taeuber, Dada Head (Portrait of Hans Arp), 1918

Dada does not jest, for the reason that it was experienced by revolutionary men and not by philistines who demand that art be a decoration for the mendacity of their own emotions.... I am firmly convinced that all art will become dadaistic in the course of time, because from Dada proceeds the perpetual urge for its renovation.
