L. Ron Hubbard and
the Narconon program
L. Ron Hubbard
The Narconon program has from the beginning been founded on key principles developed by author and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard. The keynote is that an individual is responsible for his own condition and that anyone can improve his condition if he is given a workable way to do so. It is based on improved understanding of his fundamental nature: that man is basically good and it is pain, suffering, and loss that lead him astray. In the early '60s, Mr. Hubbard was one of the first to see the long-term consequences of the accelerating drug culture. He responded warmly to William Benitez's request for help with his fledgling Narconon program in Arizona State Prison and continued to write up his observations on the effects of drugs on the individual person, his body, and the society as a whole. The Narconon program from its inception promoted an approach to rehabilitation without recourse to alternative drugs. This early program did not, however, deal directly with withdrawal symptoms and difficulties. In 1973, after Mr. Hubbard had conducted further research to aid Narconon staff to help others through the difficulties of withdrawal discomfort safely and with minimal discomfort, the Narconon program adopted these procedures to include drug-free withdrawal, using vitamins and mineral supplements along with special techniques to ease the mental and physical symptoms.

MEET L. RON HUBBARD
L. Ron Hubbard How L. Ron Hubbard came to discover these subjects is an immense story that effectively began in the first decades of the 20th century with his befriending of indigenous Blackfoot Indians in and around his Helena, Montana home. From here, the story unfolds with his study of Freudian theory with a Commander Joseph C. Thompson — the first United States naval officer to actually work with Freud in Vienna — and through journeys in Asia where Mr. Hubbard spent the better part of two years in travel and study. Another crucial milestone in this venture was his study of engineering, mathematics and nuclear physics at George Washington University — all disciplines that would serve him well through later philosophic inquiry: point of fact, L. Ron Hubbard was the first to rigorously employ Western scientific methods to the study of spiritual matters. His searches continued through the Second World War, where he tested his first Dianetics techniques, and created publishing history in 1950 with the release of the landmark Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health

Overview:
The Scientology religion is an expanding new religion, founded by American author and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard. The word Scientology means the “ study of knowledge or truth ” and addresses the rehabilitation and salvation of the human spirit.
Today, there are 4,200 Scientology groups, missions and churches in 156 countries around the world serving some 10 million Scientologists. Additionally, Churches of Scientology support more than a thousand social betterment groups, which utilize L. Ron Hubbard's methods in the fields of education, drug and criminal rehabilitation, and moral rejuvenation.
The Church has expanded more in the last five years than in the preceding fifty. In the last year alone, new Scientology groups, missions and churches have opened at the rate of three per day.

They just never, never kind of nailed down in the right place, and did just exactly the right things. You look in vain for the old school tie."
- L. Ron Hubbard The major sources quoted for the biblographical background on Hubbard include the Church of Scientology's publication What is Scientology? - Chapter 3 and Jon Atack's article from FACTNET titled "The Total Freedom Trap, Scientology, Dianetics and L. Ron Hubbard".
L. Ron Hubbard
Early Years
"Son of a naval commander Harry Ross Hubbard and Ledora May Hubbard, L. Ron Hubbard was born on March 13, 1911 in Tilden, Nebraska. At the age of two, he and his family took up residence on a ranch outside Kalispell, Montana, and from there moved to the state's capital, Helena."
"As a young boy he learned much about survival in the rugged Far West - with what he called 'its do-and-dare attitudes, it wry humor, cowboy pranks, and make-nothing of the worst and most dangerous.' Not only could he ride horses at the age of three and a half, but was soon able to rope and break broncos with the best of them."

Consider this: To recognise the contributions of notable individuals to their communities, cities, states, countries or the world, officials sometimes issue proclamations. Men of great accomplishment may receive a few of these during their lifetimes, perhaps half a dozen. It is a rare honour. Yet during the past year alone, Mr. Hubbard received 320 proclamations and recognitions from around the world. And 98 of these awards were from cities and states which also dedicated his birthday, March 13, as L. Ron Hubbard

Inside The Church of Scientology: An Exclusive Interview with L. Ron Hubbard, Jr.
"Scientology and all the other cults are one-dimensional, and we live in a three-dimensional world. Cults are as dangerous as drugs. They commit the highest crime: the rape of the soul." L. Ron Hubbard Jr. For more than twenty years L. Ron Hubbard, Jr., has been a man on the run. He has changed residences, occupations, and even his name in 1972 to Ron DeWolf to escape what he alleges to be the retribution and wrath of his father and his father's organization the Church of Scientology. His father, L. Ron Hubbard. Sr., founder and leader of Scientology, has been a figure of controversy and mystery, as has been his organization, for more than a generation. Its detractors have called it the "granddaddy" and the worst of all the religious cults that have sprung up over the last generation. Its advocates and there are thousandsswear that the church is the avenue for human perfection and happiness. Millions of words have been written for and against Scientology. Just what is the truth?
L. Ron Hubbard, Sr., and the very few who have worked at the highest echelons of the organization have never spoken publicly about the workings and finances of the Church of Scientology. Firsthand allegations about coercion, black-mail, and just how billions of dollars the organization is said to possess have been accrued and spent is lacking: that is, until very recently. In an extraordinary petition brought November 10, 1982, in Superior Court in Riverside, Calif., by L. Ron Hubbard, Jr., to prove that his father is dead and that his heirs should receive the tens of millions of dollars being dissipated from his estate, some of the mystery about Scientology has begun to unravel. Some of the details are shocking.

The World in Action The Shrinking World of L. Ron Hubbard
The only time Hubbard allowed an outside crew to interview him. Granada Television - England Transcript (V.O) Tonight, World in Action has tracked down one of the most elusive men on earth. This was the end of our search, an ex cattle boat, The Royal Scotman, docked at Bizerte, a small port in North Africa. On board, about 250 people making some sort of a crew and this, mysterious man. The local ice cream man thought he was a great scientist looking for insects. Everybody seems to think he is a millionaire. These are no ordinary sea men; their allegiance and devotion to the mysterious man is total. To them, he is: "My Commodore." The man is L. Ron Hubbard: charmer, science fiction writer and showman, the creator of Scientology and the man who is pushing it into its new more militant phase. He now requires that his crew must have training in judo and weaponry and that they must be ethically beyond reproach, tough, formidable and effective. To them, he is a savior. One of them wrote: " ...that which I have really found is the nearness to the greatness which is Ron, our founder. To me, above all, my Commodore." Today, shyness[?] has overcome Mr. Hubbard when asked to appear on television. After several weeks of hunting for him with the help of almost every radio station along the mediterranean and beyond, World in Action at last tracked Hubbard down. Just before dawn, on a recent Sunday morning, Hubbard, who finds sleeping difficult, decided at last to speak. He spoke for a long long time about his money, his beliefs, his critics and the new authoritarian structure of Scientology. But first he spoke about his troubles with the British government. He put on his hat, he smiled and he began.

The Purpose of a Lawsuit is to Harass
Ever wonder where the famous Scientology ``purpose of a lawsuit is to harass'' quote comes from? It's in the red volumes. Or used to be... I have a set of red volumes published in 1991. Volume III covers the years 1955-56. On pp. 40-66 is reprinted a lengthy article called "The Scientologist, a Manual on the Dissemination of Material." This article first appeared in "Ability, the Magazine of DIANETICS and SCIENTOLOGY from Phoenix, Arizona", Major Issue 1, published "circa mid-March 1955". The version of the article that appears in the 1991 red volumes contains this famous quote: The DEFENSE of anything is UNTENABLE. The only way to defend anything is to ATTACK, and if you ever forget that then you will lose every battle you are ever in engaged in...
However, the 1991 version does not contain this even more famous quote from the same article: The purpose of the suit is to harass and discourage rather than win. The law can be used very easily to harass, and enough harassment on somebody who is simply on the thin edge anyway, well knowing that he is not authorized, will generally be sufficient to cause professional decease. If possible, of course, ruin him utterly.
What Hubbard was discussing in this passage was the measures that can be taken to prevent people from using Scientology materials outside the church, e.g., to deliver unapproved auditing services. Hubbard claims the public needs to be protected from incompetent practitioners, but his real concern was loss of income, and loss of control over the Dianetics and Scientology movement, as had previously occurred in New Jersey.

B. Lafayette Ron Hubbard The Church of Scientology as a religious community was founded in 1954 based on the successful teachings of an American writer and expert in Dianetics Lafayette Ron Hubbard This successful science fiction author published in 1950 the first expert book on Dianetics , which was later expanded and reworked, and is currently published in 32 languages in 18 million copies, and may be considered a world-wide best seller: " Dianetics - The Modern Science of Mental Health" (the Czech version is to be published in 1996). However, Lafayette Ron Hubbard was not only a successful writer, dianetist, and psychologist, but also an original philosopher, teacher, and manager of Scientology. We especially need to stress his scientific growth and profile: He was born into the family of a marine officer in the small city of Tilden, Nebraska, however, from here the Hubbards soon moved to Oklahoma and then to Montana and, it was here in the suburb of the capital of Helena that Ron spent his childhood. As an eager scout he befriended the Indian boys of the Blackfoot tribe and became a favorite of old Tom, their medicine man. They became blood brothers, and he learned from him many languages and traditions of his tribe.
