This impeccably researched and well-written biography shows an America in which the arts played a vital role that is no longer recognized." New York Sun , Best Books of the Year, Biography "Vivid, judicious, sympathetic to its subject and sensitive to the historical context, their biography provides a compelling introduction to the Howells. It also challenges those who think they know him well by revising the standard critical account at crucial points." London Review of Books "Susan Goodman and Carl Dawson's new biography . . . make[s] a compelling case for a reappraisal of [Howells's] achievement. They offer a more complex and comprehensive portrait of the man and what he accomplished than any we have had to date. . . . A measure of Goodman and Dawson's success is that in bringing us to this understanding of Howells's life and work, they have explained not simply why Howells was important but why he still is."William P. Kelly

SEACOAST LITERARY LIONS Howells came to this region late in life in 1902, but his impact was significant. He wrote about the Isles, Portsmouth and Kittery for important publications and his family continued to influence preservation efforts in the region throughout the 20 th century. READ Howells on Celia Thaxter William Dean Howells
Author, editor, playwright, poet and Kittery resident Of all the Seacoast’s men and women of letters who might be styled Literary Lions, William Dean Howells is perhaps most deserving of that distinction. This is especially so if one considers the extent of the audience reached, the quality and sheer quantity of work produced and the number of honors bestowed. Author, editor, poet, playwright, essayist, valued friend and neighbor, Howells’ literary talents earned him entry into the most distinguished circles in the world’s most cosmopolitan centers. But familiar as he became with New York, London and world capitals, Kittery Point would remain his heart’s desire. As he wrote to a friend, "The Great Lakes are great, but Kittery Harbor is big enough for me."

The Rise of Silas Lapham
William Dean Howells
Born in Martins Ferry, Ohio, March 1, 1837 Died in New York, New York, on May 11, 1920 Beginnings For more about the life and times of the author, watch The Rise of Silas Lapham and William Dean Howells by Peggy Whitley (approx 6 min; requires Windows Media Player . Note: this may take a few minutes to load.) William Dean Howells was a self-taught author who started writing for newspapers. His first published works were poems: "Old Winter, Loose Thy Hold On Us"; "Poems of Two Friends". His works appeared in The Atlantic Monthly Saturday Press and the Cincinnati Dial Traveling Most of Howells' education was acquired through traveling, including a tour of New England and Canadian factories which eventually developed into a literary pilgrimage of New England. Several of his books, including The Rise of Silas Lapham, focused on working conditions and the class system during the end of the 19th century. Howells later traveled to Venice as the United States consul. After the Civil War, he returned to America and pursued a career as a full-time author. His experiences in Italy became background material for several travel books and essays on Italy and Italian poets. In the decade from 1881 to 1891, Howells wrote what many critics consider his best works:

Early Prose Writings of William Dean Howells, 1852-1861
By W.D. Howells Edited by Thomas Wortham While William Dean Howells is today best remembered as Mark Twain’s staunchest defender, Howells was, at his peak, the unrivaled man of letters in America: he had no contemporary equal. The achievements of both Twain and Henry James have since surpassed those of Howells in the literary hierarchy, but the work of Howells still remains an important part of American letters. In The Early Prose Writings of William Dean Howells, 1852–1861 , Thomas Wortham provides a chronological assortment of Howells’ first prose compositions, beginning with apprentice pieces published before the writer’s eighteenth birthday. Born in Martin’s Ferry, Ohio, Howells also lived in amilton, Dayton, Cincinnati, and Columbus, where Howells’ father, a printer and newspaper publisher, would move the family and set up shop. Howells started writing as a newspaperman, and this volume assembles pieces by Howells which appeared in the Ashtabula Sentinel , the Kingsville Academy Casket , and the Ohio Farmer , as well as the complete text of “The Independent Candidate”—his first attempt in print of an extended work of fiction—serialized in the Ashtabula Sentinel in 1854–55. Also included here is Howels’ novela

Two profs coauthor biography of William Dean Howells Carl Dawson and Susan Goodman 11:14 a.m., June 28, 2005William Dean Howells, though largely over-shadowed since his death in 1920 by contemporaries Mark Twain and Henry James, was widely regarded during his lifetime as the most influential American writer, according to a new book coauthored by two UD professors. In their recently published biography, Atlantic magazine during the tumultuous years of 1871-81, Howells also made a significant mark on American history as well as literature, and he left a legacy greater than what his largely forgotten body of work might imply. To streamline the vast quantity of information gleaned from archives in more than 40 libraries, Goodman and Dawson passed each section of the book back and forth between them several times before committing it to final-draft status.
