HOWE, Julia Ward (1819-1910). Author of The Battle Hymn of the Republic
Autograph Letter Signed ("Julia W. Howe") to Miss Russell, inviting her to tea to "meet Miss Carpenter of England" and adding, at the foot, a sketch showing the junction of West Road and Union Street.
1 page 8vo on graph-style paper with integral blank leaf. Oak Glen [Newport, R.I.], 17 July, n.y. [but probably 1873].
Julia Ward Howe was deeply affected by the waste and pointlessness of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. In 1872, she travelled to England in order to establish a Women's Peace Congress, but without success. Upon her return to America, she did manage to establish an annual Mother's Peace Day in June - an idea which eventually developed into Mother's Day, now celebrated in May.
Although we cannot be entirely certain about the identity of the Miss Carpenter mentioned here, it is likely that this is Mary Carpenter (1807-1877), the celebrated British philanthropist, educationalist and prison reformer, who visited America in 1873. Like Julia Ward Howe, she was a Unitarian with a firm determination to leave the world a better place than she had found it.

My Last Dance
by Julia Ward Howe
The shell of objects inwardly consumed
Will stand, till some convulsive wind awakes;
Such sense hath Fire to waste the heart of things,
Nature, such love to hold the form she makes.
Thus, wasted joys will show their early bloom,
Yet crumble at the breath of a caress;
Snatch it, thou scatterest wide its emptiness.
For pleasure bidden, I went forth last night To where, thick hung, the festal torches gleamed; Here were the flowers, the music, as of old, Almost the very olden time it seemed. For one with cheek unfaded, (though he brings My buried brothers to me, in his look,) Said, `Will you dance?' At the accustomed words I gave my hand, the old position took. Sound, gladsome measure! at whose bidding once I felt the flush of pleasure to my brow, While my soul shook the burthen of the flesh, And in its young pride said, `Lie lightly thou!'

    On January 28 , 1908, author and activist Julia Ward Howe, famous for her composition, "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," became the first woman elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Born in New York City in 1819, Howe expressed her ambition to become a writer early on. She married social activist and reformer Samuel Gridley Howe in 1843. By the mid-1850s Julia strongly supported her husband's embrace of the abolitionist movement and and they soon saw the inevitability of war. In late 1861, the couple was among a group visiting Washington, D.C., to appraise the status of Union troop morale after the First Battle of Bull Run On November 18, 1861, Howe's party was invited to review the Union troops outside of Washington.  A sudden Confederate attack disrupted the proceedings.  During the return trip to Washington, the Howes' carriage was surrounded by Union troops who joined them in singing popular Army songs of the time.  These events became the inspiration for Howe's "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." She wrote the poem to the tune of " John Brown 's Body," a marching song popular among Union soldiers. Published in the

    Letter to Byron York: Read "In re: Sealed Case" again - carefully
    I sent a letter to Byron York, White House correspondent for National Review, in response to an article he wrote in the 2/27/2006 issue of NR. The article is available at NRO here. Strangely enough, he didn't give a link to the actual decision (always a bad sign). I've included it (from FindLaw) here.
    Here's my letter in it's entirety -
    **begin**
    Mr. York,
    Your article in NR (I read it at NRO) from February 27, 2006 titled "It's Legal" has a few material errors. The real shame is that you had a great opportunity to write an article in support of the PATRIOT Act and the real intent of FISA, especially as amended by the PATRIOT Act. Instead, you chose to write an article in support of the President's "Inherent Authority", and ignored the FISA Court of Review's actual conclusions regarding Truong and the cases that flowed from it (more often than not misconstruing and over-interpreting the limits it sought to impose).
