Robert E. Howard
Robert E. Howard is known best as the creator of Conan, a character that has moved beyond his humble origins into film, television, comics, and other media. Though, despite his suicide at the age of thirty, Howard wrote a huge number of stories covering a variety of genres. From the fantasy tales he is most famous for to westerns and boxing stories, whatever subject Howard tackled there was no doubting his enthusiasm, or his ability as an author. Though Conan is his most famous creation, most of his best writing is found in his other tales, amongst them genuinely chilling stories like Worms of the Earth. Howard's obvious knowledge of history added a depth which many of his imitators have lacked, and his descriptions of ancient hideous prehistoric peoples and places generally surpasses that of renowned masters such as Lovecraft. Although occasionally rough-cut and overrunning with testosterone, Howard's writing is still fresh and entertaining. As with much of the pulp fiction of the thirties, female characters have a tendancy to be weak and left on the sidelines (though one memorable exception is Belit the pirate captain from Queen of the Black Coast), but in that these stories are a mirror of their time.

Robert Howard
The Greatest Pulp Fiction Writer in the Whole Wide World
I have lived in the Southwest all my life, yet most of my dreams are laid in cold, giant lands of icy wastes and gloomy skies, and of wild, wind-swept fens and wilderness over which sweep great sea-winds, and which are inhabited by shock-headed savages with light fierce eyes. With the exception of one dream, I am never, in these dreams of ancient times, a civilized man. Always am I the barbarian, the skin-clad, tousle-haired, light-eyed wild man, armed with a rude ax or sword, fighting the elements and wild beasts, or grappling with armored hosts marching with the tread of civilized discipline, from fallow fruitful lands and walled cities. This is reflected in my writings, too, for when I begin a tale of old times, I always find myself instinctively arrayed on the side of the barbarian, against the powers of organized civilization.
Robert E. Howard
Robert Ervin Howard
was born in Peaster , Texas in 1906. The son of one of the southwest's most prominent pioneer physicians, Howard's youth coincided with the last days of Americas frontier culture, a fact that would forever influence him and his stories.
Very early on, Howard steeped himself in the folklore and history of the southwest, the Rio Grande valley. He became fascinated with the legendary virility and strength of the pioneers and delighted in the innate poetry found in the exploration of virgin land.

Executive summary: Original Conan series Robert E. Howard was a prolific writer of pulp fiction short stories, including the original Conan the Barbarian saga. Other popular characters created by Howard included Kull of Atlantis, Sailor Steve Costigan, and Dark Agnes de la Fere. He submitted his work to publications with such lurid titles as Weird Tales Fight Stories Action Stories , and Oriental Stories , and while many of Howard's works were rejected (especially his poetry), he sold literally hundreds of stories. Supposedly he was able, in a single month during the Great Depression, to earn as much as $500 more than three times what the local bank president earned. Despite his considerable commercial success (in 1935 he paid cash for a brand new car, something no one else in his small town could do) he was repeatedly plagued by thoughts of suicide. Spending most of his life in the former oil boomtown of Cross Plains, Texas, Howard was isolated from his neighbors who could not relate to his profession. He lived at home with his parents, looking after his mother (afflicted by some vague yet debilitating malady) while his father, a doctor, was away on frequent house calls. Howard never married, and is known to have dated only one girl, Novalyne Price. Although they seemed highly compatible the relationship foundered when Price (fed up with the noncommittal Howard and his clinging mother) finally spurned love for the graduate program in education at Louisiana State.

And he's one of the worst offenders in my mom's eye since we have books by him everywhere ! Why? Robert Ervin Howard was born in 1906 and died in 1936 from a self-inflicted gun wound. He shot himself upon learning that his terminally ill mother was never going to regain consciousness. She died 14 hours later. He sold his first story at age 18 and was writing up to his death. A dozen years, that's all. He never wrote a book. He did write two novels, one published in serial form and the other over 50 years after his death. How many other authors get their novels published 53 years posthumously? What makes Howard so special?

As printed in Savage Sword of Conan #200
The future creator of Conan, Robert Ervin Howard, was born January 22, 1906, at Peaster, Texas, a tiny hamlet some forty-five miles southwest of Fort Worth. The father, a country physician, moved the little family the length and breadth of Texas over the next several years before finally settling at Cross Plains, a small town in Central Texas, in 1919. While yet in high school, young Robert began submitting short stories to the publications of the time. A chronological list of submissions in a letter to a friend, written circa 1929, indicated the first submission was "Bill Smalley and the Power of the Human Eye," rejected by both Western Story and Adventure in 1921. He finally made his first sale in 1924 when Weird Tales accepted "Spear and Fang," a short tale about Cro-magnon and Neanderthal, for $18, payable on publication. Robert worked at a number of odd jobs after graduating from high school, for his writing brought in only meager income. He worked in a law office as a private secretary, packed a rod for a geologist, wrote up oil field news for various newspapers, as a public stenographer and finally in a drugstore. In the fall of 1926, discouraged with his lack of success at the writing game, he enrolled in a bookkeeping course at Howard Payne College in Brownwood.
