Born: 12/28/1868, Died: 9/18/1938
Biography from the American Architects and Buildings database
Internationally known, Horace Trumbauer achieved considerable success after rather modest beginnings in the architectural profession. Born in Philadelphia, young Trumbauer attended the public schools of Philadelphia until he was 16 years old. Then, deciding that he wanted to become an architect, he left school to begin an apprenticeship in the thriving office of G. W. and W. D. Hewitt . There he remained until 1890, gaining important residential design experience, especially since extensive work for the Houston estate in Chestnut Hill was on the boards of the firm during his stay with them. In fact, this experience during his formative years in the profession might have influenced Trumbauer to seek work from the great entrepreneurial client. Certainly the scale of many of his later efforts could be compared to the palatial residences designed by the Hewitts, such as "Druim Moir" for H. H. Houston and the later residence for George Boldt. However, when the young Trumbauer first established his own office at 310 Chestnut Street, he launched his work with a series of designs for the builders

Quintus Horatius Flaccus
His Life
Quintus Horatius Flaccus was born on December. 8, 65 B.C., in Venusia in southern Italy. He refers to himself as libertino natus patre - the son of a freedman. In Satire 1.6 he tells us that his father was a coactor argentarius (auction broker) and publicanus (tax collector). Horace recalls him with affection and respect. He does not mention his mother, brothers, or sisters but does refer to his nurse, Pullia. One assumes his mother may have died early in his life, perhaps in childbirth. Horace's father was able to save enough money to take his son to be educated in Rome and Athens. In Rome Horace studied with L. Orbilius Pupillus, whom he recalls as plagosus , 'fond of not sparing the rod.' Horace's own father served as paedogogus, escorting him to school, giving him sound advice, and protecting him from dangers. At the age of 19, Horace continued his education in Athens at the Academy founded by Plato. Among his fellow students was M. Cicero, son of the orator; M. Valerius Messalla; and many other sons of patrician families. His studies at the Academy were interrupted by the Civil War that followed the assassination of Caesar in 44 B.C. Brutus, one of the assassins, arrived in Athens in September of 44 to raise an army which would fight against Octavian and Antony. The people of Athens, the birthplace of democracy, welcomed the man whom they felt had killed a tyrant to preserve a republic. Many of the young Roman students were attracted to his cause. Horace attached himself to Brutus and was appointed military tribune, a rank usually given to sons of senators and equites. His military career was cut short, however, when Brutus and Cassius and the cause of the Roman republic were defeated in November at Philippi. There are some allusions that Horace deserted after this defeat.

Our experienced professional faculty has been fully trained in the latest programs in reading and mathematics. Our support staff of dedicated paraprofessionals is second to none in providing in-class support in many academic areas. Academic Programs
Guided Reading is the foundation of our Literacy Program at Horace Mann at all grade levels. Our Reading Excellence Grant brought us more than $250,000 in reading materials and support resources in 2000 and we are committed to continuing this research-based approach to reading. One of the hallmarks of Guided Reading is that each child is assessed completely at the beginning of each school year and taught at his or her instructional level as they progress in reading. In mathematics, we are committed to the Everyday Mathematics program at all grade levels. This is a research-based program that focuses on a hands-on approach to learning math concepts and skills.

    80. Horace Walpole
horace Walpole wrote the first Gothic novel, The Castle of Otranto, and in doing so created the genre.

    Horace Walpole
like a ghost, thro' narrow passages Walking, feeling the cold walls with her hands. William Blake, Fair Eleanor The drowsy eye, half-closing to the lid, Stares on OTRANTO's walls; grim terrors rise The horrid helmet strikes my soul unbid Ann Yearsley Horace Walpole (1717-1797), fourth Earl of Orford, son of Sir Robert Walpole, introduced and named the genre with The Castle of Otranto: A Gothic Story Educated at Eton and King's College Cambridge. Between 1739 and 1741 Horace Walpole toured France and Italy with his friend the poet Thomas Gray (1716-71). On his return to England, Walpole become a Member of Parliament Shortly after taking up his seat, Walpole leased (1747) then bought (1749) Strawberry Hill in Twickenham, London. Following his purchase, Strawberry Hill was remodelled in Gothic style, something resembling the set for a Hammer Horror movie. It was the Gothic atmosphere of Strawberry Hill that led to the writing of The Castle of Otranto . One night, early June 1764, Walpole fell asleep in the gloom of Strawberry Hill and had a nightmare. The nightmare became The Castle of Otranto Horace Walpole: I waked one morning at the beginning of last June from a dream, of which all I could recover was, that I had thought myself in an ancient castle (a very natural dream for a head filled like mine with Gothic story) and that on the uppermost bannister of a great staircase I saw a gigantic hand in armour. In the evening I sat down and began to write, without knowing in the least what I intended to say or relate. The work grew on my hands, and I grew fond of it - add that I was very glad to think of anything rather than politics - in short I was so engrossed in my tale, which I completed in less than two months, that one evening I wrote from the time I had drunk my tea, about six o'clock, till half an hour after one in the morning, when my hand and fingers were so weary, that I could not hold the pen to finish the sentence, but left Matilda and Isabella talking, in the middle of a paragraph.
