Teaching High
So after last semester, when I wondered whether my enthusiasm for teaching was beginning to flag in a longer-lasting way, I was both looking forward to this semester to remedy some of that ennui, and dreading it lest there be more of the same.
When the London Theatre Tour was canceled, I thought that the lighter semester (one survey course, and the grad course directly in my field), would be an opportunity to take a bit of the focus off of my teaching (which is not usually something I'm looking for, but which this semester I welcomed as a change), and focus more on my writing.
And to a degree, that's been true. So far this month, I've finished a draft of an article and gotten to some work on th book project (starting with the introduction, no less). And the reading for the grad class has me decidedly in the frame of mind to work on the book.
What I didn't expect was the way it would have me also excited about teaching.

Letter to Horace Greeley
Written during the heart of the Civil War, this is one of Abraham Lincoln's most famous letters. Greeley, editor of the influential New York Tribune, had just addressed an editorial to Lincoln called "The Prayer of Twenty Millions," making demands and implying that Lincoln's administration lacked direction and resolve. President Lincoln made his reply when a draft of the Emancipation Proclamation already lay in his desk drawer. His response revealed his concentration on preserving the Union. The letter, which received acclaim in the North, stands as a classic statement of Lincoln's constitutional responsibilities. A few years after the president's death, Greeley wrote an assessment of Lincoln. He stated that Lincoln did not actually respond to his editorial but used it instead as a platform to prepare the public for his "altered position" on emancipation. Executive Mansion,
Washington, August 22, 1862. Hon. Horace Greeley:

Several of My Trees
Below are pic's of a few of my trees. These were taken in the late summer of '95 - my second attempt at presentable photos. These are a bit better than the last batch but I still can't get the depth or detail that I would like. I guess the next batch will be even better - yes - I, at least, try to be an optimist . This was my first time using a photo-CD rather than scanned photos and I'm still trying to figure out how to get the best renderings from the .PCD files. As I find time, I will be adding a few more icons ( made from these new photos ) to the icon collection - so, if you're interested, keep an eye peeled for additions. You might also be interested in - where I have put photos of a few trees that exhibit typical styling problems - along with advice from online contributors. I've also added an indexed search facility that can be used to find all kinds of advice and articles and stuff related to bonsai. ooba ooba

"Having experimented for some time on automatic transmitters and having
the occasion to observe the very interesting achievements of other workers
in the automatic field. I decided that there was a demand for a small, simple
and portable sending machine which, while being automatic or nearly so,
would, as nearly as possible, retain the merits but not the demerits of the
old Morse key." Horace G. Martin, February 1903
This site is dedicated to life and career of Horace G. Martin; telegrapher, inventor,
and manufacturer best known for his invention of the Vibroplex Bug. Martin's idea of
a semi-automatic key stated above in 1903 revolutionized the way Morse code was
transmitted. His inventions affected the careers of thousands of telegraphers and radio
operators for decades and are still used and admired today. Below are articles that
trace Martin's life to 1906. There will be additional articles and material added to this site in the months and years ahead........73

Horace T rahan is shown at the 2002 Festival de Musique Acadienne performing during a tribute to the late Felix Richard, the Cajun accordionist who first taught Horace how to play. Felix Richard's portrait is visible in the background. Also taking part in the tribute were Zachary Richard, Michael Doucet, and Kenneth Richard, son of Felix Richard. In 2003, just as his song "That Butt Thing" was becoming a hit on pop radio stations in Southwest Louisiana, Horace Trahan decided to end public performing and to devote himself to his life as a born again Christian. As always, Horace Trahan remained true to his own beliefs. In "Don't Worry About Horace," a song included on the New Ossun Express' debut album

Horace Greeley
Horace Greeley was born in Amherst, New Hampshire in the farm country west of Nashua and Manchester . His schooling was intermittent, but he was an enthusiastic reader. At age 15 he was apprenticed to a printer in Vermont and began learning a trade he would follow, in one form or another, for the remainder of his life. In 1831 Greeley settled in New York City and quickly became involved in a number of publishing ventures, including the New Yorker (1834), which dealt with current events, the arts and literature. He became, for a while, an ally of Thurlow Weed and William H. Seward , joining them in championing a number of political reforms. The New York Tribune , one of the earliest “penny dailies” popular in the era, was established in 1841. Greeley also would publish a weekly nationwide edition of the Tribune , which won him and his views wide recognition. The Tribune set a higher tone than its competitors by avoiding sensationalism and offering regular features such as book reviews. Greeley and the Tribune spoke out in opposition to such things as government support of the railroads, the massive accumulation of wealth in the hands of a few, monopolies and land speculators. He offered support for traditional

Horace Walpole (1717–1797) , English historian, Member of Parliament, connoisseur, playwright and novelist, said to have coined the term serendipity wrote the Gothic novel Castle of Otranto Fourth Earl of Orford, Horace Walpole was born 24 September 1717 in Arlington Street, Piccadilly, Westminster, London, England, the third son of Whig politician and First Earl of Orford Sir Robert Walpole, who would soon be England's longest running Prime Minister, and his wife Catherine née Shorter. Young Horace spent most of his childhood under the loving eye of his mother whilst his father was away much of the time on business and often with his mistress Maria Skerrett, who he would later marry. Walpole was tutored at home before entering Eton College in 1727, and then on to King's College, Cambridge in March 1735. Lady Walpole died in 1737, much to the distress of her son, possibly leading to his departure in 1738 from Cambridge before finishing his degree. He embarked on the Grand Tour of the continent with his friend whom he had met at Eton, poet Thomas Gray (1716-1771), though they would prove to be incompatible travel companions. Immersing themselves in the social life, they went to Paris and Rheims then on to Florence and Tuscany. It was there that he met the British minister to the court of Tuscany, Horace Mann, with whom he became great friends, and Lady Mary Wortley Montagu of whom he would write about sardonically later. Walpole quarrelled with Gray and they parted ways in 1741. It is likely that Walpole was homosexual and preferred the non-committal company of older women.

You will need to install the Shockwave plug-in to use them. My goal in putting this material on the web is to encourage students to read Horace. NB: This website has a similar set of Shocked Catullus poems I included the text of the poems for students to print out and make notes on, do scansion, etc. I am very much interested in the use of hypertext glossing in foreign language learning, and would love to get feedback from students or teachers using these materials. I am interested in your answers to questions such as:
  • Are they helpful? Do you feel you learn the vocabulary as well, or not as well, as when you have to look words up in the dictionary? Do you find that you re-read the poems more if you have this resource?
