    English poet.
    INTRODUCTION
Considered a major English poet, Hopkins's poems are distinguished by stylistic innovations, most notably his striking diction and his pioneering use of a meter he termed "sprung rhythm." Hopkins's radical departure from traditional poetics, coupled with his reluctance to publish his writings, caused his works to be almost completely unknown in the nineteenth-century. However, critics today agree that Hopkins is the author of some of the finest and most complex poems in the English language, and he is firmly established as a major figure in the development of modern poetry.

It gathers to a greatness, like the ooze of oil
Crushed. Why do men then now not reck his rod?
    Generations have trod, have trod, have trod;

Hopkins was both a Catholic and a Victorian. The religious sensibility that suffuses every one of his poems was mediated at all times by his cultural moment. His readings of Scotus and Ignatius were shaped by the experience of being Catholic in a particular time and place, Victorian England. His responses to secular contemporaries such as Darwin and Tyndall were those of a Catholic convert and a Jesuit. Investigations of Hopkins' spirituality have too often detached his beliefs from their local habitation in a newly industrialized, historically anti-Catholic, and increasingly secular England. Studies of Victorian Hopkins have focused on the poet's pre-conversion years, largely ignoring his Catholic influences. Only Hopkins' interest in Newman, whose influence was most intense before the poet's conversion, has received serious critical attention.

Hopkins was born in Stratford, Essex (near London). He was educated at Balliol College, University of Oxford, where in 1866 he converted to Roman Catholicism. Upon entering the Jesuit order two years later, he destroyed the poetry he had already written. Between 1874 and 1877, as a student of theology in northern Wales, Hopkins learned Welsh; inspired by the language and by its poetry, he began to write again (but only after his superiors in the church encouraged him to do so). One of his initial efforts was “The Wreck of the Deutschland” (1875). This long religious poem, about the martyrdom of a group of shipwrecked German nuns, evinces the first use of techniques perfected by Hopkins in later works such as “The Windhover,””Pied Beauty,””Duns Scotus' Oxford,” and “Henry Purcell.” These lyrics are attempts to capture the uniqueness—or

    Poems by Gerard Manley Hopkins
Winter with the Gulf Stream The boughs, the boughs are bare enough
But earth has never felt the snow.
Frost-furred our ivies are and rough With bills of rime the brambles shew.
The hoarse leaves crawl on hissing ground
Because the sighing wind is low. But if the rain-blasts be unbound
And from dank feathers wring the drops
The clogged brook runs with choking sound Kneading the mounded mire that stops
      His channel under clammy coats
Of foliage fallen in the copse. A simple passage of weak notes
Is all the winter bird dare try.
The bugle moon by daylight floats So glassy white about the sky, So like a berg of hyaline, And pencilled blue so daintily I never saw her so divine. But through black branches, rarely drest In scarves of silky shot and shine, The webbed and the watery west Where yonder crimson fireball sits Looks laid for feasting and for rest. I see long reefs of violets In beryl-covered fens so dim, A gold-water Pactolus frets Its brindled wharves and yellow brim, The waxen colours weep and run

Hopkins, Gerard Manley (1844-1889) In some of the most original poetry of the Victorian period, the sexually-repressed Gerard Manley Hopkins celebrated male beauty as one of the most splendid witnesses to the divine. Born into a financially comfortable family of marine insurance adjustors, the oldest of nine children, Hopkins was small of stature and extremely lively of mind. Acceptance into Balliol College, Oxford, on a classics scholarship allowed him to study with Benjamin Jowett, the influential translator of Plato and discreet commentator on "Greek love," and Walter Pater, who would later become the center of a cult of young men dedicated to Greek beauty, Renaissance intensity, and modern aestheticism. But it was the lingering shadow of John Henry Newman that most influenced Hopkins at Oxford. At age twenty-two, Hopkins not only converted to Roman Catholicism but, on the advice of Newman, shortly afterward entered the Jesuit order, in which he was ordained a priest in 1877 after years of rigorous study. He taught at various Jesuit schools until 1885, when he was elected professor of classics at University College, Dublin, in whose cold, damp climate Hopkins's ever-weak constitution gradually failed. He died only four years later, of typhoid fever, after a period of somewhat questionable emotional stability.

    THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
TWO POEMS by Gerard Manley Hopkins, S.J. Our Blessed Mother Mary is celebrated in art, literature, music and song, great cathedrals, and in simple piety and love from countless millions.... Here are just two offerings from this vast treasure-house two great poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins, the Jesuit-priest-poet. While his poetry is not always the easiest to read and grasp yet it may well be among the most profound and insightful ever penned! My own conviction is that in these two poems the entire Catholic vision of Mary is laid out before us in magnificent words, in what Hans Urs von Balthasar calls Hopkin's "sacramental poetry." Giving voice to classic poetry. The Windhover
    To Christ our Lord
    by Gerard Manley Hopkins
I caught this morning morning’s minion, king-
dom of daylight’s dauphin, dapple-dawn-drawn Falcon, in his riding
Of the rolling level underneath him steady air, and striding
High there, how he rung upon the rein of a wimpling wing
In his ecstasy! then off, off forth on swing,
As a skate’s heel sweeps smooth on a bow-bend: the hurl and gliding
Rebuffed the big wind. My heart in hiding Stirred for a bird,—the achieve of; the mastery of the thing! Brute beauty and valour and act, oh, air, pride, plume, here Buckle! AND the fire that breaks from thee then, a billion Times told lovelier, more dangerous, O my chevalier!
