    The Multitext Homer
    The Multitext Edition of Homer
The multitext of Homer is envisioned as a combination Alexandrian edition and Venetus A for the twenty-first century. The complete edition will include known variants from papyri, scholia, medieval manuscripts, and quotations. As a teaching and research tool, the CHS multitext offers an easy access to this wide range of sources and commentary in one cooperative system. In sum, the multitext of Homer provides a prototype for developing holistic and historically contextualized approaches to ancient texts.
A Multitextual Approach to Reading Homer
Instead of choosing between variants and plus verses in an attempt to recover the ipsissima verba of Homer, we include them in a multitext format that embraces the fluidity of the textual traditions of the Iliad and Odyssey. The ideal medium for a multitext of Homer is not a traditional printed text but an electronic, web-based edition. Unlimited in its ability to handle complex sets of variants, an electronic multitext offers critical readers of Homer the opportunity to consider many possible texts at various stages of transmission. It allows the reader to select and navigate between multiple modes of transmission, and to recover a more accurate and accessible picture of the fluidity of the textual traditions in their earliest stages.

    Iliad
    Genre - Epic
Literary works are divided into various categories called genres in accordance with their characteristic form and content. The Iliad belongs to the genre of epic. An epic is a long poem which tells a story involving gods, heroes and heroic exploits. Since the epic is by its very nature lengthy, it tends to be rather loosely organized. Not every episode is absolutely necessary to the main story and digressions are not uncommon. You will notice how different in this regard is the genre of drama, in which every episode tends to be essential to the plot and digressions are inappropriate. The events narrated in epic are drawn from legend rather than invented by the poet and are typically of great significance as in the case of the Iliad , which relates an important incident centering around the greatest hero of the Greeks in the Trojan War, the most celebrated war of Greek legend (see Troy for more information on the Trojan War). The epic poet tends to present his narrative impersonally, not drawing attention to himself except occasionally, as in the first line of the

Homer for Kids - the ancient Greek poet who wrote the Iliad and the Odyssey
    Homer
To the classical Greeks , Homer's epics played very much the same role that the Bible plays for a lot of people today. People memorized big chunks of Homer's writings in school , and they repeated bits of it in order to convince other people to do something or think something.
Homer lived around 700 BC , in the Archaic period in Greece. We don't know where in Greece he lived exactly. People said he was blind , but poets were often said to have been blind, so this might not be true (people say poets are blind because they think that being blind helps the poets to "see" things other people can't, like to know what the gods are doing). When Homer was born , the Greeks had just recently learned how to use the alphabet from the Phoenicians . Homer used the alphabet to write down two long epic poems called the Iliad and the Odyssey . Probably Homer didn't make up these stories, or even the words, himself. Poets or bards had been going around Greece telling these stories for hundreds of years already. But Homer wrote them down, and gave them their final form. Probably he also did a lot of work on them, to make them as good as they are.

In the study of Greece, to read Homer is considered essential. It has been written by many authors of present, and spoken of in many of the universities and schools of the past that you cannot know Greece, unless you have read Homer's, The Illiad , and The Odyssey , and even his other poetic works. Homer's work is still considered a main staple to the literary library of any student, and in some regards, his work is used as historical evidence of the life within Bronze Age, or Mycenean Greece. Click here to Read The Odyssey and The Illiad. They are presented here in their full text versions, and will take a minute or two to load. The Odyssey The Illiad The two works which have borne Homer into the realm of literary immortality are The Illiad and The Odyssey . Though Homer wrote many works, these two remain the staples of his literary body. Though the two works are considered masterpieces, and are thought to compliment one another, from the perspective of genre they are as different as night and day.

Bust of Homer (British Museum, London) Homer : legendary Greek poet, author of the Iliad and Odyssey The Greeks and Romans always thought that the legendary poet Homer was the greatest author ever. However, we know hardly anything about the man or men who composed the Iliad (a long epic on the wrath of the warrior Achilles, which endangered the Greek expedition to Troy ) or the Odyssey (an equally long poem on the difficult voyage home of Odysseus). At the moment, most scholars agree that these texts were dictated to a writer by a very capable bard, who used older, oral traditions, at the beginning of the eighth century BCE. We do not know to what extent later poets have made additions or changes to the two epics. It is interesting to compare the two poems of Homer with the standard version Babylonian . There's a similarity: a capable poet writes down a poem that had until then been transmitted orally. The main hero of the Iliad There's also a difference. We can not say something meaningful about the contents of the pre-Homeric poetry, and it is very difficult to say whether a Trojan War has ever taken place. The "prehistory" of the , on the other hand, is pretty well-known.

The name ' Homer' is still used as a convenient term for the author or authors of the two great epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey. But nothing whatever is known concerning these early poets: instead of biography, we find the 'Homeric Question'that is, the problem of the time and place at which the two poems were made, and the manner in which they assumed their present shape.
