Influenced Virgil Dante Alighieri Homer is a legendary ancient Greek epic poet, traditionally considered the author of the epic poems the Iliad and the Odyssey . No reliable biographical information about Homer survives from classical antiquity , and he is generally considered a legendary, rather than a historical figure. The Iliad and the Odyssey are now understood as the products of a centuries-long tradition of orally composed poetry ; the role of an individual poet, or poets, in composing the poems is a matter of dispute. According to some scholars, the Iliad and the Odyssey are the product of the same poet, but for others, such as Martin West , the Iliad and the Odyssey were composed by different poets. For other scholars, such as Gregory Nagy , the epics are not the creation of any individual, but rather slowly evolved towards their final form over a period of centuries; in this view, the poems are the collective work of generations of poets. Homer's works begin the Western Canon and are universally praised for their poetic genius. By convention, the compositions are also often taken to initiate the period of

word for word (over 25,000 lines of poetry); it may be possible that the Homeric poems were memorized with more exactitude than scholars believe. No matter what the case, by the end of the Greek Dark Ages, these bards or story-tellers were probably the cultural center of Greek society; their status improved greatly as Greeks began to slowly urbanize.
Homer , and that he sung ten epic poems about the Trojan War, of which only two survived (although the Greeks seem to have known them). As a group these poems told the entire history of the Trojan War; each poem, however, only covered a small part of that history. Many classicists believe that the two surviving Homeric epics (probably the only Homeric epics) were in fact composed by several individuals; in the absence of any evidence to the contrary, most classicists accept the overall Greek idea of a single author. Whatever the compositional history of the poems, they were set down into writing within a few decades of their composition; the growing urbanization of Greek society led to the rediscovery of writing (learned from the Phoenicians this time), and the Homeric poems were committed to writing very quickly. Time and transmission added much extraneous material to the poems, but in their basic character and outline they seem to be the original compositions.
Iliad is the story of a brief event in the ninth year of the war (which the Greeks claim lasted ten years); the great hero

Homer was A Greek poet, to whom are attributed the great epics, the Iliad, the story of the siege of Troy, and the Odyssey, the tale of Ulysses's wanderings. The place of his birth is doubtful, probably a Greek colony on the coast of Asia Minor, and his date, once put as far back as 1200 BC, from the style of the poems attributed to him is now thought to be much later. Arguments have long raged over whether his works are in fact by the same hand, or have their origins in the lays of Homer and his followers (Homeridae), and there seems little doubt that the works were originally based on current ballads which were much modified and extended. Of the true Homer, nothing is positively known. The so-called Homeric hymns are certainly of a later age.

Last night I spent two hours pulling together stuff for tax purposes. I'm waiting for one more piece of paper and then that chore will be done for the year.
I'll be credit card debt-free in the next couple of weeks. My home loan is disappearing at an almost dizzying rate. The interest on my home equity loan is dropping (thanks shitty economy!). I'm going to put my tax refund in my savings account and behave myself. 2008 will be the year my personal finances improve.
Considering how good I've been at stuffing money into my 401K, I'm ready for the next step in life- becoming a SugarDaddy.

The Greek Poet Homer

There has been a great deal of controversy about the identity of Homer. He is the author credited with "writing" (or creating) the two great epics from ancient Greek civilization: the Iliad and the Odyssey . Scholars debated (and some still do) for decades about whether there was an actual man known as Homer, or if instead the pair of epic poems were composed over time, by a series of storytellers, and were eventually written down. Although this is a fascinating issue, as it reveals that the Greeks were at one point a primarily oral society, the question itself is essentially moot. The fact is these two stories are profoundly moving tales of the heroic and legendary aspirations of the Greek people. Whether they were created by a single individual or by an anonymous collective makes no difference in the end. Controversy aside, there is no question that both the Iliad and the Odyssey had a deep and far-reaching effect on the legends and myths of the ancient Greeks. Some of the most renowned characters of mythology play roles in either one or both of these epics: Achilles, Ajax, Agamemnon, Menelaus, Helen, Paris, Hector, Odysseus, Penelope, etc. are all vividly portrayed. They are heroes and heroines, but they are also human, with flaws and foibles like the rest of us. The Greek gods and goddesses also take active parts in the stories, and it is in the

The Homeric Hymns

Homer was the major figure of ancient Greek literature and the author of the earliest and finest epic poems, the Iliad and the Odyssey . Tradition has it that he lived in the 12th century B.C., around the time of the Trojan War, in an Ionic settlement, either Chios or Smyrna, where he made his living as a court singer and storyteller. But modern archaeological research has uncovered artifacts similar to those described in the poems, providing evidence that Homer wrote at a later date. Most scholars now suppose that Homer was Ionian of the 8th or 9th century BC. Homer writes nothing of himself in his poems, but similes in the Iliad and the Odyssey frequently make reference to the humble lives of farmers and artisans, so it is sometimes conjectured that Homer was of this class.

Her catalogue is a landmark in Homer studies. It puts Homer in his true relationship to illustration, to other American art and to the European and English examples he followed, from Ruskin to Millet ; its vivacity of argument matches that of the paintings. Cooper has brought together some two hundred watercolors-almost a third of Homer's known output. It is a wholly delectable show, and it makes clear why watercolor, in its special freshness and immediacy, gave Homer access to moments of vision he did not have in the weightier, slower diction of oils. "You will see, in the future I will live by my watercolors," Homer once remarked, and he was almost right. He came to the medium late: he was thirty-seven and a mature artist. A distinct air of the Salon, of the desire for a "major" utterance that leads to an overworked surface, clings to some of the early watercolors-in particular, the paintings of
