Physician Writer
An intellectual triple threat as doctor, speaker and author, Oliver Wendell Holmes was a leading citizen of 19th-century Boston. He graduated from Harvard in 1829 and first came to prominence the next year, when his patriotic poem "Old Ironsides" helped prevent the scrapping of the historic battleship U.S.S. Constitution . ("Aye, tear her tattered ensign down!" is the poem's opening command.) Holmes studied medicine in Paris, then returned to Harvard and earned his M.D. in 1836. At the early age of 33 he became the first dean of Harvard Medical School and from 1847 until 1882 he was a popular professor of physiology and anatomy; his research produced a groundbreaking 1843 paper on "The Contagiousness of Puerperal Fever." He also became a highly-regarded public speaker at Boston affairs of all sorts. Beyond that, he published many volumes of writings and essays throughout his life, starting with Poems in 1836. In 1858 he helped found the magazine

Modern History Sourcebook:
Oliver Wendell Holmes : Contagiousness Of Puerperal Fever, 1843
Introductory Note Oliver Wendell Holmes was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, August 29, 1809, and educated at Phillips Academy, Andover, and Harvard College. After graduation, he entered the Law School, but soon gave up law for medicine. He studied first in Boston, and later spent two years in medical schools in Europe, mainly in Paris. On his return he began to practise in Boston, but in two years he was appointed professor of anatomy at Dartmouth College, a position which he held from 1838 to 1840, when he again took up his Boston practice. It was soon after this, in 1843, that he published his essay on the "Contagiousness of Puerperal Fever," his only contribution of high distinction to medical science. From 1847 to 1882 he was Parkman professor of anatomy and physiology in the Harvard Medical School. He died in Boston, October 7, 1894. In spite of the importance of the paper here printed, Holmes' reputation as a scientist was overshadowed by that won by him as a wit and a man of letters. When he was only twenty-one his "Old Ironsides" brought him into notice; and through his poetry and fiction, and the sparkling talk of the "Breakfast Table" series, he took a high place among the most distinguished group of writers that America has yet produced.

Instinct

A man may fulfill the object of his existence by asking a question he cannot answer, and attempting a task he cannot achieve.
Existence
A man's opinions, look you, are generally of much more value than his arguments. Opinion A moment's insight is sometimes worth a life's experience. Invention A very desperate habit; one that is rarely cured. Apology is only egotism wrong side out. Nine times out of ten, the first thing a man's companion knows of his short-comings is from his apology. Apologies All is holy where devotion kneels. Devotion An artist that works in marble or colors has them all to himself and his tribe; but the man who moulds his thoughts in verse has to employ the materials vulgarized by everybody's use, and glorify them by his handling. Poetry Apology is only egotism wrong side out.

During the 19th century, women in childbirth were dying at alarming rates in Europe and the United States. Up to 25% of women who delivered their babies in hospitals died from childbed fever (puerperal sepsis), later found to be caused by Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria As early as 1843, Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes advocated handwashing to prevent childbed fever. Holmes was horrified by the prevalence in American hospitals of the fever, which he believed to be an infectious disease passed to pregnant women by the hands of doctors. He recommended that a physician finding two cases of the disease in his practice within a short time should remove himself from obstetrical duty for a month. Holmes's ideas were greeted with disdain by many physicians of his time. In the late 1840's, Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis was an assistant in the maternity wards of a Vienna hospital. There he observed that the mortality rate in a delivery room staffed by medical students was up to three times higher than in a second delivery room staffed by midwives. In fact, women were terrified of the room staffed by the medical students. Semmelweis observed that the students were coming straight from their lessons in the autopsy room to the delivery room. He postulated that the students might be carrying the infection from their dissections to birthing mothers. He ordered doctors and medical students to wash their hands with a chlorinated solution before examining women in labor. The mortality rate in his maternity wards eventually dropped to less than one percent.

Man's mind, stretched by a new idea, never goes back to its original dimensions. Sin has many tools, but a lie is the handle which fits them all. The right to swing my fist ends where the other man’s nose begins. To be seventy years young is sometimes far more cheerful and hopeful than to be forty years old. Man has will, but woman has her way. Pretty much all the honest truth telling there is in the world is done by children. Fame usually comes to those who are thinking about something else.
