  • Hollander, John ), New York City-born poet, received his A.B. from Columbia and Ph.D. from Indiana University and since 1959 has been a member of Yale's faculty, except 1966–77, when he was at Hunter College. A Crackling of Thorns (1958), sophisticated poems, was selected by Auden for the Yale Younger Poets Award, and Auden has been an influence on him, along with the metaphysicals and the tradition of English song represented by Campion and Jonson . Hollander is himself an accomplished musician and wrote the scholarly study The Untuning of the Sky: Ideas of Music in English Poetry, 1500–1700 (1961). These two earliest books were followed by Movie-Going (1962) and Visions from the Ramble (1965), poems whose inspirations came from his native city's Broadway and Central Park. His next book

    John Hollander is a genius
A little while back I quoted from John Hollander's brilliant Ghazal , in Agha Shahid Ali's anthology Ravishing Disunities . Then today I came across another (slightly) Indian-themed poem in an anthology called Poetry 180 (edited by Billy Collins).
It begins with a particularly maddening/surreal epigram from Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland
    "For Fiddle-de-dee"
    by John Hollander
"What's the French for fiddle-de-dee?" "Fiddle-de-dee's not English," Alice replied gravely. "Whoever said it was," said the Red Queen...
    What's the French for "fiddle-de-dee"?
    But "fiddle-de-dee's not English" (we
Learn from Alice, and must agree).
The "Fiddle" we know, but what's from "Dee"?
Le chat assis in an English tree?
Well what's the French for "fiddle-de-dench"? (That is to say, for "monkey wrench") Once in the works, it produced a stench. What's the Greek for "fiddle-de-dex"?

T HE DIALECTIC of text and image has long provoked theoretical speculation and promises to be increasingly important in the next century. This seminar will examine canonical and more recent accounts of that relationship, to assess their variety and also to identify approaches likely to be useful. Students will prepare a collaborative, annotated bibliography of selected studies of verbal-visual relationships, to be published on the World Wide Web. They will also develop individual projects in any of several relevant areas, ranging from history painting to book illustration to film to computer graphics.

    What Makes a "Candidate"
    About This Page
Regrettably, I have been spared little time of late for the development of this site. While I hope and expect that I will be returning to a heavier commitment to it soon now, in the meantime I thought to augment the site with a list of authors and books that I suspectfrom considerable examination of others' comments on them (and on who those "others" are and how credible they are)might plausibly end up, once I have read them, being added to the main lists at this site. Let me make it clear that I am not exactly "prejudging" these books, and that in consequence this list is unlike the main lists, in that it is not a list of recommendations but rather just a list of intriguing possibilities . As time (and, in the case of some rarer books, budget) allows, I will read these and either add them to the actual "recommended" lists or just discard them. I set forth this list only to assist those fewif anywho occasionally look to this site for some hints on new realms to explore in their reading. This list is basically just a prettified and annotated copy of my personal "buy and read" list, but that list has some nuancing worth mention. Although I intend to examine everything on this list, I do not reckon equal probabilities of success for everything on it. Some authors soundto the extent that we can deduce reliably from existing comment and reviewlike they are virtual locks; most just sound pretty interesting; and a few I am more or less skeptical about, but will examine owing to the total weight of others' critical approval. I have used color coding, explained farther below, to mark out each author's status in this list. While it may seem curious, or even hypocritical, to segregate authors whose works I admittedly have not personally reviewed, the distinction is of value, at least to me, in that it creates a triage order in which to attack the list; and having set up those distinctions, I simply pass them on for what they may, or may not, be worth to others.

English 360B Major Author: Dante Fall Term 2003 Professor Michael Curley Scheduled meetings: MWF Office hours: MWF 3:00 - 4:00 p.m., Wyatt Hall 151 or by appointment Phone: Ext. 3779 Dante takes his place among the major authors of world literature for the depth and richness of his portrait of the human condition, and for the power and beauty of his poetry. He has exerted a strong influence on later writers from Boccaccio and Chaucer in his own day, down to James Joyce, Samuel Beckett and Seamus Heaney. Major new translations of his works appear with regularity. A history of critical responses to Dante's Commedia would constitute a history of criticism from the late Middle Ages to the present. This course will provide you with the opportunity to read the entire Commedia La vita nuova We shall also study the wide variety of critical and artistic responses to Dante, primarily during the twentieth century. A word of advice: leave time in your schedule to read the assignments in this course slowly, patiently and attentively. Read actively, ask questions, write your papers on the enduring problems that Dante addressed: love, hatred, hope, despair, damnation, death and redemption. Texts: Dante Alighieri
