Johann Christian Friedrich Hölderlin (1770-1843) Hyperion illustrates this struggle and how the integration of these two principles is set as a goal for life. The superiority of poetry over philosophy in pointing to the truth is suggested through this novel plus several poems, and this theme was of particular interest for Heidegger’s later thought.

    2. Life and Philosophical Background Hölderlin was born in 1770 in Swabia in South-Western Germany. He studied theology and was originally destined for a career in the Lutheran church. His studies eventually took him, at the age of eighteen, to the famous Tübingen seminary where he studied with Hegel, as well as with his old school friend Schelling. Hölderlin came to Jena in 1794, after Fichte had taken over the chair of philosophy from Reinhold. During that period, Hölderlin was a staunch supporter of the French Revolution, which was seen by many German intellectuals as a source of hope for the future. Hölderlin found a position as a private tutor and fell passionately in love with his pupils’ mother, Susette Gontard. She was to be the inspiration behind the Diotima of his novel Hyperion Hölderlin’s original philosophical thought emerged before his move to Jena: the main poetic work of philosophical interest

    When I was a boy ...
    When I was a boy
A god would often save me
From the scolding and switches of men,
And I would play safely and beautifully
With the flowers of the grove,
    And heaven's soft breezes
Played with me. And as you delight
    The hearts of the flowers
    When they extend
Their tender arms to you You delighted my heart,
Father Helios! and, like Endymion, I was your favorite, Holy Luna! O all you faithful Friendly gods! If only you knew How my soul loved you! Then I did not call you By your names, and you Did not call me as men do, As if they knew each other. But I knew you better Than I've ever known mankind, I understood the silence of the sky

The Voice of Critique: Aesthetic Cognition After Kant
    Thomas Pfau , Duke University
    Coda
A constitutive obligation of critical practice, albeit often unacknowledged at present, is to sustain at all times an acute awareness of its historical origins. As we have seen, the moment when a critical response to the phenomenon of "pleasure" and the aesthetic came to play a seminal role occurs in those decades taking us from the late Rousseau of the Reveries to Kant's third Critique . Part of that struggle, especially in the Critique of Judgment , meant properly locating the voice of critical thought itself. Kant conceives of that voice as the expression of a balance between our intuitive and our rational faculties, between our idiosyncratic orientation toward the uniquely material textures of the empirical world and the crucial, if comparatively mediated, obligation to render that world more permanently inhabitable, or rational. To recognize that there ought to be balance between these two stances—which is the basic ethical demand of the Critique of Judgment —is to recognize that aesthetic production and critical knowledge are rooted in the same impulse. Sensibly, Kant chose to leave undetermined whether the voice of critique ought to be understood as an integral component of aesthetic experience or merely as one of its epiphenomenal effects. He did so not because he did not know how to answer the question but because he felt, perhaps intuitively, that it would be the wrong question to ask or, in any event, a fateful one to answer. For any attempt to resolve the issue by pronouncing the work of critique to be wholly isomorphous with the contingent material experiences that gave rise to it or, alternatively, as sublating (

Against the Stream: Remarks on the Film The Ister
Galili Shahar The film The Ister by David Barison and Daniel Ross defines itself as a "remark" on Martin Heidegger's lectures on Friedrich Hölderlin's poem Der Ister (1942). What is the meaning of this remark? What is "a remark"? And how can a documentary film provide a remark on a philosophical text that defines itself as beyond philosophy? What then, is a remark on Heidegger? According to Heidegger's own understanding, the remark is a supplement. The remark accompanies the original text, it goes along with it. It is a way of writing that calls for moments of attention (Heidegger, Hölderlin's The Ister , 2). The remark is not an "interpretation" of the text; it does not represent its content and does not say what is already presented in the text itself. The remark is rather a reflection that is written as a dialogue within the hidden layers of the text. The remark listens to the foreign voice of the text and gives it a name. Heidegger's own remarks on Hölderlin's poem Der Ister are of this nature. This is how Heidegger speaks with Hölderlin.
