  • James Hogg 1770-1835
Scottish poet, novelist, short story and song writer, journalist, editor, playwright, and essayist. The following entry presents criticism on Hogg from 1979 through 1998. For further discussion of Hogg's life and career, see NCLC, Volume 4.
    INTRODUCTION
A well-known Scottish author of the early nineteenth century, Hogg established a persona as the “Ettrick Shepherd,” a rustic and provincial poet, and gained fame through his association with the influential Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine. Abundant in his literary output, Hogg wrote a variety of poetry, ballads, songs, short stories, and historical narratives, many of which feature his extensive knowledge of Scottish folklore. He is primarily remembered today for his experimental novel, The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner (1824), which was largely dismissed by contemporaries as an obtuse satire on Christian fanaticism. Featuring Gothic and supernatural elements, including a schizophrenic narrator and a psychological double/devil figure, as well as a proto-modern narrative complexity, the work has been rediscovered by modern critics who have come to view it as a masterpiece of prose fiction. Though many of Hogg's works have been neglected for a century and a half, contemporary scholars have begun the process of reevaluating his literary achievements and are generally receptive to his work.

      Hogg
Glasgow: John Reid..., 1834 first edition thus, 12mo. in sixes, pp.[ii]+iv+136, orig. pale mauve cloth, mauve label lettered in gilt Corson 208. Pirated edition of Hogg’s personal memories of his friend and contemporary, originally published in the United States two months previously as Familar Anecdotes of Sir Walter Scott and here with the addition of 15 footnotes (presumably by the American editor, S. De Witt Bloodgood). With all its faults, inaccuracies, plenty of Hogg’s self-confessed egotism, and plenty to appall Lockhart, it is a delightful read, important as a reflection of Hogg as well as of Scott.

James Hogg and The Unfathomable Hell
Author Richard D. Jackson Independent Scholar Abstract The use of opium, often in the form of laudanum, was a constituent element of the Romantic Imagination. Coleridge, Thomas De Quincey, and Charles Lloyd were all subject to its bondage. In Scotland the literati of Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine were aware of its prevalence. James Hogg had a ‘perfect horror’ of the effects of laudanum and gave great offence to John Gibson Lockhart when, in his Anecdotes of Sir W. Scott , he revealed that Lady Scott had taken opium. In one of the ‘Noctes Ambrosianae’ published in Blackwood’s , probably written by John Wilson (himself possibly an opium user) Hogg’s persona, accompanied by De Quincey, also a Blackwood’s contributor, speaks eloquently about its horrid effects. Hogg parodied Coleridge’s poetry and was familiar with the unfathomable hell into which opium’s usage plunged its ‘eaters’. The nightmarish experiences of Robert Wringhim in Hogg’s

"Dialogue and Marginality in James Hogg's Confessions of a Justified Sinner
The name James Hogg is most readily associated with his very strange and generically heterogeneous text The Memoirs and Private Confessions of a Justified Sinner . Part gothic fiction, part folklore, part memoir, part history, and part travel account, this text corresponds closely to Bakhtin's definition of the novel as a genre which has no form of its own but provides a field where a variety of genres and discourses come into play. But if Confessions is conspicuous because of its stylistic heterogeneity, the critical tradition that surrounds the novel is conspicuous for its uniformity. Ever since Andre Gide brought the novel into the critical spotlight, critics have tended to follow Gide in posing a psychological reading of Hogg's tale. In fact, Andrew M. Cooper's biographical sketch of Hogg introduces the poet-novelist as a writer "Known today as the author of The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner . . . an extraordinary portrayal of the psychology of antinomian Calvinism" (140). With this in mind, I suggest a dialogic reading of

    Genealogy by Childs
Looking for persons that may have lived in Henniker, New Hampshire?
We offer the list of names below to begin your search. These are names of persons who lived in Henniker, or whose descendants lived in Henniker, and are in an unpublished genealogy prepared by Francis Lane Childs. The Childs genealogy is a collection of Henniker families genealogies that are housed by the Henniker Historical Society at Academy Hall. If you find a name that you would like more information about, please contact us by mail, e-mail or visit us at the Society in Henniker. For addresses etc, see General information . We are willing to copy the related pages and send them to you. They cannot be e-mailed at this time, so be sure to send us your postal address. We will verify that the person you are looking for is actually a descendant of the person listed if you are not sure. The names listed here are the names of the earliest family ancestor of the person who lived in Henniker that Mr. Childs was able to document. If he could not do a family genealogy, he just tells us something about the Henniker resident. He also tells wonderful personal stories about many of the people. We ask that you reimburse us at the rate of 25 cents a page plus postage as we are a small society that relies solely on donations to run all our volunteer operations. Some families have extensive genealogies and some have very little. If you would like to know how many pages we have on a particular family, we will be happy to let you know.
