Hogg was born on a farm near Ettrick Forest in Selkirk and baptized there on December 9 . He had little education, and became a shepherd , living in grinding poverty hence his nickname, The Ettrick Shepherd . His employer, James Laidlaw of Blackhouse, seeing how hard he was working to improve himself, offered to help by making books available. Hogg used these to essentially teach himself to read and write (something he had achieved by the age of 14). In 1796 Robert Burns died, and Hogg, who had only just come to hear of him, was devastated by the loss. He struggled to produce poetry of his own, and Laidlaw introduced him to Sir Walter Scott , who asked him to help with a publication entitled The Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border . In 1801, Hogg visited Edinburgh for the first time. His own collection

Hogg, James
November 1770 - 30 November 1835
Scottish poet, novelist, and short-story writer, Hogg (known in his day as "the Ettrick Shepherd") is in some ways representative of the Romantic phenomenon of the "natural poet," a self-taught writer thought to represent a "naive" or uncorrupted human perspective. While indeed self-taught (Hogg was largely illiterate until he was in his early twenties), Hogg's literary achievements belie some of the stereotypes associated with him. While he at times deliberated cultivated the pose of the natural poet, Hogg's literary sensibilities were acute, and his acquaintance with Sir Walter Scott and involvement in some of Scott's projects helped further develop his talents. (Scott and Hogg would later have a falling out in part on the basis of a disagreement over the literary uses of supernaturalism.) Most famous today for Confessions of a Justified Sinner , Hogg also wrote a number of supernaturalist tales and poems, many of which appeared in Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine and which were collected (and poorly revised and edited) in The Shepherd's Calendar

Without any real difficulty Hogg could have become a United States senator in 1896, but he was content to return to private practice. After his wife died in 1895, he invited his older sister, Mrs. Martha Frances Davis, to come to his home to help rear his children. Though he was in debt when he relinquished the governor's chair to his attorney general, Charles A. Culberson, Hogg was able to build up a sizable family fortune by his law practice and wise investments in city property and oil lands. He successfully inculcated in his children a worthy interest in individual and public welfare as evidenced by numerous gifts to the University of Texas and various services to Texas as a whole, as well as to the cities of Houston and Austin.

Famous Scots
- James Hogg (1770-1835) The Ettrick Shepherd
Born at Ettrick, Selkirkshire, in the Scottish Border country, Hogg was the son of a shepherd. He received a scanty education but at the age of 16 he was inspired to write poetry by hearing a reading of "The Gentle Shepherd" written by Allan Ramsay (1686-1758). His poetical life was further developed by a connection with Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832). Hogg supplied Scott with a number of ballads for his "Border Minstrelsy" collection. But it was not until 1807, when a volume poems entitled "The Mountain Bard" was published that he earned any recognition. It is interesting to note that he published a practical guide to the care of sheep in the same year! But the money earned from his published works were soon lost in unprofitable farming. He published "The Queen's Wake" in 1813, a series of ballads supposedly recited before Mary Queen of Scots at a competition of Scottish bards. This earned Hogg some recognition outside of the Borders as it possessed some real merit, showing a strong if rather fantastic imagination. Later Life
Hogg spent the latter half of his life partly in Edinburgh and partly at a farm at Altrive in Yarrow in the Borders. The farm had been given to him by the duke of Buccleuch.

Executive summary: The Queen's Wake Scottish poet, known as the "Ettrick Shepherd", was baptized at Ettrick in Selkirkshire on the 9th of December 1770. His ancestors had been shepherds for centuries. He received almost no school training, and seems to have had difficulty obtaining books to read. After spending his early years herding sheep for different masters, he was engaged as shepherd by Mr. Laidlaw, tenant of Blackhouse, in the parish of Yarrow, from 1790 until 1799. He was treated with great kindness, and had access to a large collection of books. When this was exhausted he subscribed to a circulating library in Peebles. While attending to his flock, he spent a great deal of time in reading. He profited by the company of his master's sons, of whom William Laidlaw is known as the friend of Sir Walter Scott and the author of Lucy's Flittin . Hogg's first printed piece was "The Mistakes of a Night" in the Scots Magazine for October 1794, and in 1801 he published his

James S. Hogg
James S. Hogg was born March 24, 1851 near Rusk, in east Texas. His birthplace would later give him the distinction of becoming the first native-born governor of Texas. Hogg was orphaned at the age of eleven when his father, a Confederate general, died in May 1862, and his mother died soon afterwards. To help support himself, he worked as a typesetter in a newspaper office at an early age. He later owned his own paper. Meanwhile, he studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1875. In 1878, Hogg held his first public office when he was elected county attorney of Wood County. He then ran and was elected district attorney for the seventh judicial district. In 1886, Hogg became Attorney-General of the State of Texas, then was re-elected to that post two years later. He easily won the Democratic nomination for governor in 1890, and went on to become governor of Texas from 1891 through 1895. Even among larger-than-life Texans, Hogg was an imposing figure. At six feet two inches and two hundred and eighty five pounds, the feisty governor was a popular advocate of the common citizen and did much to strengthen public respect for law enforcement in general. He sponsored anti-trust legislation and helped establish the powerful Railroad Commission during his tenure as governor. After retiring as governor, Hogg continued an active interest in good government, but held no other public office. He pursued his successful and growing business interests until his death in Houston on March 6, 1906. He is buried in Austin.

James Hogg (1770-1835), also known as 'The Ettrick Shepherd' lived and worked for most of his life in Ettrick Forest in the Scottish Borders. He is best known for his innovative novel, The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner Hogg published poems, songs and novels, many of which explore traditional idioms in new ways. These include Scottish Pastorals The Mountain Bard The Forest Minstrel The Queen's Wake The Pilgrims of the Sun , The Poetic Mirror The Brownie of Bodsbeck (1818) and The Jacobite Relics of Scotland Ballads from Hogg's family, and collected by the writer, appear in Walter Scott's The Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border (1802-03). The Domestic Manners and Private Life of Sir Walter Scott (1834) is an insightful portrait of Hogg's enduring if, at times, fraught friendship with Scott. In 1810 Hogg moved to Edinburgh, where he edited the short-lived satirical periodical

HOGG, JAMES STEPHEN (1851-1906). James Stephen Hogg, the first native governor of Texas, was born near Rusk on March 24, 1851, the son of Lucanda (McMath) and Joseph Lewis Hogg. qv He attended McKnight School and had private tutoring at home until the Civil War. qv His father, a brigadier general, died at the head of his command in 1862, and his mother died the following year. Hogg and two of his brothers were left with two older sisters to run the plantation. Hogg spent almost a year in 1866 near Tuscaloosa, Alabama, going to school. After returning to Texas, he studied with Peyton Irving and worked as the typesetter in Andrew Jackson's qv newspaper office at Rusk. There he perfected his spelling, improved his vocabulary, and was stimulated by the prose and poetry contributions of his brother Thomas E. Hogg, qv who was studying law. Gradually, the family estate had to be sold to pay taxes and buy food, clothes, and books while the brothers tried to prepare themselves to earn a living by agriculture and practicing law as their father had done. While helping the sheriff at Quitman, Hogg earned the enmity of a group of outlaws, who lured him over the county line, ambushed him, and shot him in the back. He recovered and turned again to newspaper work in Tyler, after which he ran his own papers in Longview and Quitman from 1871 to 1873, fighting subsidies to railroads, the corruption of the Ulysses S. Grant administration, and local lawlessness. He served as justice of the peace at Quitman from 1873 to 1875. He studied law and was licensed in the latter year. Meanwhile, he had married Sallie Stinson; four children were born to them. Hogg received his only defeat in a contest for public office in 1876, when he ran against John S. Griffith
