How James P. Hogan Saved the World
      By Terry Hickman
13 January 2003 J ames P. Hogan is a large, silver-haired Irishman with an easy-going and kindly manner, a sly sense of humor, and a stubbornly optimistic world view. He may have rescued the world from the Cold War at a bargain-basement cost but more on that later. Hogan reigned as Author Guest of Honor at WillyCon V in March 2002, and I had a chance to visit with him at various times during the weekend. His philosophy of GoH'ing manifested itself in his easy availability for the Wayne State College students at WillyCon and adaptability to the unexpected. As he said to one grateful WillyCon organizer, "You people pay my way to get here, and treat me well; it's what I'm here for, to talk to students and be around when people have questions." You have to take him seriously when you see him follow that philosophy even unto the local karaoke bar, to be serenaded by the WillyCon students with some of the worst caterwauling I've ever heard. He earned his Guinness that night! In his address at the opening ceremonies, Hogan said that science fiction isn't about predicting things that will happen, or how the world will be. Even though SF occasionally turns out to have dealt with technical gadgets or scientific breakthroughs that came later, the real value of science fiction, and of fantasy, is to help us learn about ourselves. A story about nothing but machines would do nothing for anyone unless somehow those machine characters illuminate something about human beings. SF can also inspire young people to go into science, to work on some of the problems of humanity to try to solve them and make life on this planet better. It expresses and stimulates our limitless curiosity about the world, ourselves, and the Universe. Science fiction and fantasy, according to Mr. Hogan, can help show us how to be better human beings.

Search Authors Search Books About James P Hogan James P. Hogan is a science fiction writer in the grand tradition, combining informed and accurate speculation from the cutting edge of science and technology with suspenseful story-telling and living, breathing characters. Born in London in 1941, he worked as an aeronautical engineer specializing in electronics and digital systems, and for several major computer firms before turning to writing full-time in 1979. His first novel was greeted by Isaac Asimov with the rave, "Pure science fiction ... Arthur Clarke, move over!" and his subsequent work quickly consolidated his reputation as a major SF author. He has written over a dozen novels including Paths to Otherwhere and Bug Park (both Baen), the "Giants" series (coming soon from Baen), the New York Times bestsellers The Proteus Operation and Endgame Enigma and the Prometheus Award Winner The Multiplex Man (all available from Baen). Hogan currently splits his time between residences in Ireland and Florida.

Hogan, James P. The legend that was Earth - Book Review
Kliatt March, 2002 by Lesley S.J. Farmer Baen. 504p. c2000. 0-671-31840-3. $7.99. A When the Hyadeans begin trading with Earth, it looks like a win-win situation. The Hyadeans have high-tech products, and the Earth attracts the aliens with its legendary diverse geography and people. The Hyadeans credit their advances to their lack of questioning; where Earthly scientists get caught up in theory, the Hyadeans just accept the facts, and build upon them. However, as the Hyadeans experience the sometimes-illogical nature of humans, they come to appreciate their sense of self-sacrifice and creativity.

The Jupiter Novels ... by Charles Sheffield
    A review by Rich Horton
Advertisement Outward Bound is the latest in Tor's new Jupiter series of young adult science fiction novels. These are trumpeted as an attempt to recreate some of the spirit of Robert Heinlein's famous "juveniles". In particular, they have been set in the solar system, and have featured fairly realistic space exploration technology, and teenage protagonists. In these ways they resemble much of Heinlein's work. But too close attention to the model can result in a pale imitation instead of something special and new, and I fear that Outward Bound isn't new enough; or different enough.

Whether you loathe it or adore it, the genre of science fiction has one superlative quality that redeems decades of sometimes-awful writing: it stretches the reader's mind. Not only the reader's mind, as it turns out, but the minds of its writers as well.
A book like this one is like a triathlon workout for the mindgrueling and exhausting, but with a nice endorphin endorphin /en·dor·phin/ ( en-dor´fin ) any of three neuropeptides, a-, Ÿ-, and ?- endorphins; they are amino acid residues of Ÿ-lipotropin that bind to opiate receptors in various areas of the brain and have potent analgesic effect.
en·dor·phin high afterwards. No one can claim that this is an easy read, for it is not. But advanced YAs will hold their ground, people interested in the world we live in will be fascinated, and teachers of science will want to think about adding it to their curricula. A Conversation with James P. Hogan
By Tim Ventura, August 8th, 2003
I called James P. Hogan on a Friday morning, while he was in the USA on business. He was in a hotel room in Florida, and I was lucky to catch him when - he was due to return to his residence in Ireland on Monday and was on a tight schedule. Needless to say, I was grateful for any time that he could give me on the phone to discuss science and technology, and our brief conversation ended up being a one and a half-hour discussion on a wide variety of topics from particle physics and antigravity research to artificial intelligence.
One of the first things that he mentioned to me was email. "You know," he said, "for those of us on dial up it would be easier if you sent out a link to attachments rather than 2 megabyte files embedded in email." I quickly apologized for this I use a broadband connection and often forget to check some of the file sizes that I attach. I suppose that there might be a small ego component also after all, in light of the Lifter experiments I tend to consider my garage to be an immensely interesting place, and often get overzealous in sending out my garage-experiment video clips on the Internet.
