James P. Hogan
James Patrick Hogan was born in 1941 in London as the son of an Irish father and a German mother. During his teens he developed a fascination for science, which could rationally explain (almost) everything in life. He was educated at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, specializing in electronics and digital systems. After having worked this field for several years, Hogan became a sales representative in the computer industry. In 1971 he left for the United States and became a sales advisor, specializing in the application of minicomputers in science and research. He became a full-time writer in 1977. Exactly 28 years later, in May 2005, the fifth part of what had now become the Giants series appeared, Mission to Minerva. Hogan definitely won the bet. Besides fiction, Hogan has also written two non-fiction books, Kicking the Sacred Cow en Mind Matters, which - despite having a very strong scientific base - are very accessible to those who don?t have a similar background. He has also published numerous articles and short stories. A comprehensive bibliography, a biography and other interesting material can be found on his website

Homepage James P. Hogan is a science fiction writer in the grand tradition, combining informed and accurate speculation from the cutting edge of science and technology with suspenseful story-telling and living, breathing characters. Born in London in 1941, he worked as an aeronautical engineer specializing in electronics and digital systems, and for several major computer firms before turning to writing full-time in 1979. His first novel was greeted by Isaac Asimov with the rave, "Pure science fiction ... Arthur Clarke, move over!" and his subsequent work quickly consolidated his reputation as a major SF author. He has written over a dozen novels including Paths to Otherwhere and Bug Park (both Baen), the "Giants" series (coming soon from Baen), the New York Times bestsellers

I've read more books by this author than any other!
His books are always a good read with action filled plot lines and characters that I can identify with. I have 17 of his books in my science fiction collection. The science in Hogan's fiction isn't overly technical and complements the story line. I never hesitate to grab one of his books when I see it on the bookshelf of my local bookstore. I highly recommend James P. Hogan if you're new to the science fiction genre
Three reasons I love James P Hogan's books
1. His approach to science and scientific theories makes his fiction plausible.
2. His storylines keep me engaged in the characters.
3. He's almost always got something new out.
James P Hogan at a Glance
Hogan's style of science fiction is sometimes considered hard science fiction; in his earlier work he conveyed a sense of what science and scientists were about. His philosophical view on how science should be done comes through in many of his novels; theories should be formulated based on empirical research, not the other way around. If a theory does not match the facts, it is theory that should be discarded, not the facts. This is very evident in the Giants series, which begins with the discovery of a 50,000 year-old human body on the Moon. This discovery leads to a series of investigations, and as facts are discovered, theories on how the astronaut's body arrived on the Moon 50,000 years ago are elaborated, discarded, and replaced.

UNBEARABLE?
Few generations of young people can have been so betrayed by the adult world that their natural instincts lead them to trust, and which they depend on for security and guidance than those of today. If they're not in parts of the world that are being bombed, looted, or exploited for cheap labor, they are cynically manipulated to become wage and tax slaves on the consumer treadmill and force-fed a diet of scare stories and politically correct ideologogies designed to instill fear, conformity, and subservience. The latest emetic that I read told of children coming home in tears after being told at school that we're wiping out the polar bears. Well, sorry, but the world was as warm in the 1930s as it is now, warmer in the late medieval period, warmer still in Roman times, a lot warmer a few thousand years before that when southern England was tropical, and the polar bears came through just fine. Actual studies of present populations show that they're again managing to thrive regardlessmaybe because they don't watch TV.

The English-born writer got into the science fiction business in an unusual fashion. When Hogan was a London-based salesman for industrial computer control systems, a fellow worker bet him that he couldn't write a science fiction novel and get it published. The result of that bet, the novel Inherit the Stars (1977), not only earned Hogan a publishing contract but also won him five pounds. Since then, he has written more than 20 books, including Thrice Upon a Time Giants' Star The Proteus Operation Entoverse Bug Park (1997), and Cradle of Saturn Two of Hogan's novels have been honored with the Prometheus Award, given by the Libertarian Futurist Society for the best libertarian science fiction novel of the year. Hogan won for Voyage from Yesteryear (1983) and The Multiplex Man Hogan's libertarianism also shines forth in Mirror Maze
