Alice Hoffman
At 24, Alice Hoffman kicked off a stellar literary career by publishing her very first book, Property Of. That was 1977. Then came the deluge: 16 more novels (including Practical Magic, The Ice Queen, The River King, Here on Earth), plus short stories, screenplays, fiction for teens, picture books for youngsters, not to mention critical acclaim and financial success. Hoffman's latest novel, Skylight Confessions, presents a part romantic, part toxic portrait of a wildly dysfunctional family across several generations, with ingredients such as an architecturally significant house, a red-haired ghost, and the constant intervention of fate. Victoria Lautman chatted with Hoffman, who spoke by phone from her home in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Q: Three decades, 17 novels, and nearly a dozen other books. I'd say that's prolific.
A: I honestly don't feel prolific. My children have moved out and I'm not writing screenplays, so to tell the truth I now feel really lazy! But writing is like breathing for me, not a hardship . . . just part of daily life.

Incantation (Alice Hoffman)
Incantation is another one of Alice Hoffman's books for young adults. Incantation is a fairly short book, telling the story of Estrella, who lives with her family in Spain in the 1500s. Estrella discovers that her family belong to a rather different church to her friend Catalina - they light candles on Friday nights, keep pigs as pets, and have special names for each other to use in the privacy of their home. When their secret is revealed, it has terrible consequences for the family.
Incantation is surprisingly graphic in its violence, and I was rather depressed by the time I closed the final cover. However, it's very well written, and I imagine a reasonably accurate portrayal of the persecution of Jews in Spain at the time - a gripping story. Posted by Cee at 10:55 AM Labels: fiction YA

Alice Hoffman Among men and women, those in love do not always announce themselves with declarations and vows. But they are the ones who weep when you're gone. Who miss you every single night, especially when the sky is so deep and beautiful, and the ground so very cold. "Incantation" by Alice Hoffman
I finished "Incantation" the other day and have to say that I really enjoyed it. It's about a girl living in Spain about a hundred years after the Inquisition who finds out that her family, she she had always thought was Catholic, is secretly Jewish. Of course, there are a couple things that don't really make sense to me, like the fact that after the protagonist finds out her real religion, there's seemingly no transition for her between Catholicism and Judaism. She just accepts that her religion is different than what she believed her whole life. She may have just been trying to support her family, but I personally find it hard to believe that it would be so easy to just accept a new religion so quickly. The book is rather descriptive of the torture and death of the Jews and Muslims in the town. It not only gets pretty bloody but also has themes of racism and segregationism based on religion. It's not for middle schoolers. Posted by Maggie P.

    • UK By Emma Hagestadt Saturday, 1 September 2001 A whiff of witchiness always haunts Hoffman's sunny suburban settings ? crooked apple trees fill the skyline, and gilded lilies spring up along the sidewalks. Hoffman's latest novel opens on a perfect June morning with a married couple smooching over the breakfast dishes. Even after 13 years of marriage Jorie Ford still has the hots for husband Ethan. They have a designer kitchen, a sweet-natured son, and the respect and envy of their neighbours. But within minutes of this picture perfect opening, the sheriff and his men are tapping on the door with a warrant for Ethan's arrest. Accused of murdering and raping a teenager 15 years ago, Ethan is thrown into jail. Staking her emotional territory somewhere between Wuthering Heights and a Hallmark greeting card, Hoffman is not really a grownup's writer. Her adolescents, as you might expect, are particularly well drawn, and here, as in much of her previous fiction, it's the fatal attraction of a young girl for a dangerous predator that underpins the novel and its many persuasive sub-plots. Border-line icky, Hoffman's artful confections are hard to put down.

About JoMA
  • JoMA is published by the Endicott Studio , an organization dedicated to literary, visual, and performance arts inspired by myth, folklore, fairy tales, and the oral storytelling tradition.
For generations, artists have drawn upon mythic and folkloric symbolism to make contemporary works addressing the issues of their time. Our mission is to honor mythic artists of the past, support mythic artists working today, and to carry this tradition into the future.
"The job of a storyteller is to speak the truth," writes the great children's book author Alan Garner. "But what we feel most deeply can't be spoken in words alone. At this level, only images connect. And here, story becomes symbol; symbol is myth. And myth is truth."
JoMA is a nonprofit webzine, supported by reader donations , and creative contributions from an international circle of mythic writers, artists, and scholars.

Review of the book, with selections from the text.
http://www.theromancereader.com/hoffman-magic.html
Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman (Berkley, $7.99, PG-13) ISBN 0-425-16846-8 Alice Hoffman writes lyrical novels where the bizarre co-exists with the mundane. Her other novels are brilliant but often bleak or disturbing. Practical Magic , first published in 1995, is a romance lover's dream, however. This paperback version is being reissued to coincide with the upcoming release of a movie based on the book. I don't know anything about the movie, but I'm sure it can't approach the beauty of the novel. "For more than two hundreds years," the novel begins, "the Owens women have been blamed for everything that has gone wrong in town. If a damp spring arrived, if cows in the pasture gave milk that was runny with blood, if a colt died of colic or a baby was born with a red birthmark stamped onto his cheek, everyone believed that fate must have been twisted, at least a little, by those women over on Magnolia Street." Sally and Gillian Owens are the youngest members of this notorious family. Orphaned at a young age, the two sisters are being raised by their elderly widowed Aunts, who may or may not be witches. Unlike most girls, Sally and Gillian have almost no supervision, discipline, or companionship. The Aunts are busy selling charms and potions to lovelorn women. The other schoolchildren either fear, taunt or avoid the girls. From watching their Aunts
