Lori Aurelia Williams Making believe: Alice Hoffman takes her practical magic to the river INTERVIEW BY ELLEN KANNER In The River King , ghosts appear in photographs and people are knocked out by an overwhelming smell of roses "though the weather was dismal and no flowers bloomed." This isn't the real world, it's the world of Alice Hoffman, whose 13 novels sparkle with enchantment. "There are people who write fiction to come to terms with their own lives. I'm much more interested in creating alternate universes, not everyday reality," said the author, speaking from her home outside Boston. Hoffman, who has peopled her novels with witches (Practical Magic, 1995) and giants (Illumination Night, 1987) and armed her merely mortal characters with charms and spells, never outgrew her love of fairy tales. She thinks at heart, no one has. Everyone wants to believe. As a girl, Hoffman adored Mary Poppins and stories by the Brothers Grimm and Ray Bradbury, but more than that, she believed in them. "I believed anything can happen. It was a huge escape for me as reader. I loved anything that could remove me from reality and make me see possibilities," she said. "Fiction in general gives you the freedom of exploring the truth without boundaries, to get to a deeper truth, and fairy tales have always been my model."

lice Hoffman was born in New York City on March 16, 1952 and grew up on Long Island. After graduating from high school in 1969, she attended Adelphi University, from which she received a BA, and then was a Mirrellees Fellowship at the Stanford University Creative Writing Center, which she attended in 1973 and 74, receiving an MA in creative writing. Hoffman's first novel, PROPERTY OF, was written at the age of twenty-one; while she was studying at Stanford, and published shortly thereafter by Farrar Straus and Giroux. Ms. Hoffman credits her mentor, professor and writer Albert J. Guerard and his wife, the writer Maclin Bocock Guerard, for helping her to publish her first short story in the magazine FICTION. Editor Ted Solotaroff then contacted her to ask if she had a novel, at which point she quickly began to write what was to become PROPERTY OF, a section of which was published in Mr. Solotaroff's magazine, American Review. Hoffman has been represented by Elaine Markson of the Elaine Markson Agency for the past twenty-five years. Hoffman is married, lives outside Boston, and is the mother of two sons. Alice Hoffman has published a total of fifteen novels, two books of short fiction, and six books for children. Her novel

"Blackbird House"
(Reviewed by Cindy Lynn Speer DEC 19, 2004) The second is in the next tale, when a young woman looses her family and then her home, until a pair of women from the village convince her to go to the old Hadley farm, where a man who lost his leg to a halibut lives quietly, blacksmithing. The two fall in love, and to prove his love the man goes and gets her a pear tree that will bring forth scarlet fruit. In the next story we learn more of that love as their daughter must make an impossible decision. And on it goes, the farm passing from one person to another, some finding hope, some finding love, among a place where sweet peas grow wild like weeds, were a tree grows scarlet fruit, and a blackbird, white as snow, haunts the place still.

Indigo

This warmly human and unconventionally magical tale celebrates the power of finding your true identity.
Excerpt:
At midnight the wind in the trees can sound like the ocean. The moonlight can make a road appear as endless as the sea. Martha noticed this as she climbed out her window, stopping to tack a note for her father on the door before she headed to meet the McGills.

Results Page: I always felt and still feel that fairy tales have an emotional truth that is so deep that there are few things that really rival them.
My theory is that everyone, at one time or another, has been at the fringe of society in some way: an outcast in high school, a stranger in a foreign country, the best at something, the worst at something, the one who's different. Being an outsider is the one thing we all have in common.

Among men and women, those in love do not always announce themselves with declarations and vows. But they are the ones who weep when you're gone. Who miss you every single night, especially when the sky is so deep and beautiful, and the ground so very cold.

Part of the healing process for me was what would I want to read if I was newly diagnosed - I would want to read a story of possibility and one of those possibilities was to have this woman be a romantic heroine.
    ...
I also like the whole idea of fairy tales and folk tales being a woman's domain, considered a lesser domain at the time they were told.

She is the New York Times bestselling author of TURTLE MOON, AT RISK, PROPERTY OF, ANGEL LANDING, PRACTICAL MAGIC, SECOND NATURE, WHITE HORSES, and HERE ON EARTH. She currently lives near Boston with her family and her dogs. PAST INTERVIEW August 10, 2001 Now that Alice Hoffman has published her fourteenth novel, BLUE DIARY, The Book Report Network sent Senior Writer Jana Siciliano to speak with her about her long-lived career, her fairy tale worlds and the realities of illness and loss in everyday life. TBR: Thanks so much for doing this today. I know you're busy but we just want to add a little to our conversation from last year, when THE RIVER KING came out. So I'd like to ask you a few questions, first specifically about BLUE DIARY. Ethan Ford finds himself paying for a crime he committed long ago, when he was "someone else." How did you decide upon this theme of reinvention for BLUE DIARY? AH: I think that that idea of reinvention originally sprang from the fairy tale of Bluebeard and the idea of someone reinventing themselves or turning out to be not what you think they are. I was reading different versions of that fairy tale and talking about it with other women, feeling that it was a really resonant fairy tale for a lot of people. The original fairy tale was about the youngest sister going into a room in the castle and finding all the bodies of the wives that came before her - she is confronted with truth, thinking about how often we think we know people and we really don't.
