Sorting Through the Advice: A Review of "How-to-Write" Books
Angela Kublik
School of Library and Information Studies, University of Alberta
Introduction:
In Thunder and Lightning: Cracking Open the Writer's Craft , her third installment of advice for would-be writers, Natalie Goldberg recalls her amazement at hearing that a poet friend was writing a book about how to write poetry: Perhaps I shouldn't be surprised. After all, didn't I do that, too? But I thought I was an anomaly. I see now that there's an entire movement. When Writing Down the Bones came out in 1986, bookstores put it in the reference section. Now, at the end of our millennium, they have separate sections dedicated to books on writing. (43-44) Indeed, Goldberg is quite correct in suggesting that there is "an entire movement" of books about writing - everything from novels to screenplays to cookbooks - and a trip to the local public library or nearby bookstore quickly confirms her observations. A search of the Edmonton Public Library online catalog under the subject "authorship" locates almost two hundred items with titles such as Sin and Syntax: How to Craft Wickedly Effective Prose Hale You Can Write Poetry (Mock), and

The Invention of the World by Jack Hodgins About this title: Then, Donal Keneally, an Irish giant who thought he could invent the world, led a band of faithful followers from rural Ireland to Vancouver Island in search of Eden. In the course of his search, he founded the Revelations Colony of Truth.
Now, Maggie Kyle runs an extraordinary boarding house on the original site of the Colony, and she and her irrepressible boarders search out Keneally' s story as a key to their own roots and even the possibility of love.
Originally published in 1977, "The Invention of the World" is Jack Hodgins' first novel.

The Lieutenant Governor's Award
for Literary Excellence
Third annual recipient:
Jack Hodgins
"It was forty years ago that Jack Hodgins started systematically sending stories to magazines. Thirty years ago, ten of those exquisite early stories were collected into a book that remains both an unforgettable portrait of British Columbia life and a literary classic: Spit Delaney’s Island . In novels such as The Invention of the World The Resurrection of Joseph Bourne (which won him a Governor General’s Award in 1979), The Barclay Family Theatre The Macken Charm and Broken Ground , Hodgins has continued deepening and broadening his multivolume, panoramic portrait of Vancouver Island people, dwarfed by their own dreams and extravagant ambitions as much as they are by the trees in the old-growth forests. The marriage, in a single human being, of such acute perception, extravagant imagination and personal reserve makes Jack Hodgins himself as thoroughly unlikely yet as absolutely real as any of his characters. And no writer has done more than he to give British Columbia a place on the literary map of North America."
Jack Hodgins was born in Comox in 1938, and raised in the logging community of Merville. After graduating from the University of British Columbia, he moved to Nanaimo, where he taught high school English until 1979. He has been a writer-in-residence at Simon Fraser University and the University of Ottawa, and taught fiction workshops at the University of Victoria from 1983 to 2002. He most recently taught at the Banff Centre for the Arts. He lives in Cadboro Bay, Victoria, with his wife Dianne.

59. Sleepin' In Seattle: Hodgins Looks Like Shakespeare
The second thing I noticed was that Shakespeare looked like hodgins. Who, you may well ask, is hodgins? jack hodgins is a fictional character on the TV

Sleepin' in Seattle
A relatively frank discussion of who I am, what I'm doing, and what I think.

Hodgins looks like Shakespeare
and I discovered this because of the blogs.
I not only write in my own blog, I read a number of them. I read news blogs, political blogs, current event blogs, and a few personal blogs. One of those few is written by the English writer, Neil Gaiman. Neil's was one the first blogs I ever discovered.
I've been a fan of Neil's work for many years. He looks like a rock star and writes like no one I'd ever read before. His work goes from comics and graphic novels (which I don't actually read) to children's books with stops at various kinds of science fiction and fantasy in between.
He's not only unspeakably cool, he knows other unspeakably cool people, Penn and Teller among them. So when he writes in his blog (although he calls it a journal, because he's English and cool) about Teller and "the Scottish play," I'm curious. I'm even more curious when it starts off: Want to read something really cool? Something beautifully written that's all about art and blood and magic and horror? And Shakespeare? And the theatre? Something that's about the enthusiasm of art? The joy of putting talented people together and building something that hasn't been done before? About making people see things that aren't there? About lying in the service of art?

http://www.7thfloormedia.com/resources/languagearts/commentary/natural.html
"Writers get haunted by things," says Jack Hodgins. When Hodgins used the images evoked by his family's stories surrounding Vancouver Island's Great Fire of 1922 to introduce his book about the narrative process, he knew he would have to write about it someday. The Passion for Narrative was published in 1993. In September, 1998, Hodgins' latest novel, Broken Ground was published. This novel is about that Great Fire. "I have finally completed the process I was teaching so long ago." The Natural Storyteller
(Taken from the Passion for Narrative by Jack Hodgins) "Flames surrounded us - remember that? Smoke, and howling wind! I never felt such heat. You had to keep something wet against your mouth just to breathe." "Fire come roaring down off Constitution Hill and across the top of the timber, right through all them farms up Howard Road -" "Cows went crazy. Stampeded!" "Horses had better sense, they found a swamp and stood in it right through the night." Sometimes we could hear with an ear to a knothole in the attic bedroom wall. Sometimes we had to creep out and sit at the top of the stairs. Gradually, we slid down, one step at a time, to listen in the shadow of the landing. The family had gathered in the living room - my mother and father, my father's brothers and their wives, my father's sisters and their husbands. This could be any occasion - Christmas, a funeral, an ordinary Saturday night. Sooner of later they would start to remember, would tell one another stories they already knew. How two brothers blew up the schoolyard privy and almost got themselves expelled. How the Old Man ran away from Ontario and met Ma as he was fleeing west through Nebraska. How the worst forest fire in the history of Vancouver Island came down off the mountains and surrounded the stump ranch and threatened to wipe the whole family off the face of the earth.
