The Educational Theory of E. D. Hirsch Analyst: Jen Coppola RETURN
1. Theory of Value:
Hirsch advocates teaching a core knowledge that emphasizes specific information for students to learn. It is a "lasting body of knowledge, which includes such topics as the basic principles of constitutional government, mathematics and language skills, important events in world history, and acknowledged masterpieces of art, music and literature" (I, pp. 28-31).
Hirsch also believes that a child should acquire a broad vocabulary because it is "an index to broad knowledge, and broad knowledge, extended over time, is the key to depth of knowledge and to a general ability to learn new things" (C, p. 9).
He asserts that "the principal aim of schooling is to promote literacy as an enabling competence" (G, p. 137). General knowledge should be a goal of education because it "makes people competent regardless of race, class or ethnicity while also making people more competent in the tasks of life." This general knowledge includes knowing facts. Hirsch says that highly skilled intellectual competence only comes after one knows a lot of facts (A). 2. Theory of Knowledge:

The Influential E.D. Hirsch
Hirsch's message strikes a chord with many teachers and parents. But what are the assumptions behind Hirsch's prescription for school reform? And will his proposals get us where we need to go? By Walter Feinberg (NOTE: The footnotes in this article are hot-linked. Click on the highlighted number to go directly to that footnote. Click on the number in front of the footnote to return to the place in the article you just left.) There is no disputing the influence of E.D. Hirsch, Jr. A familiar figure to parents, teachers and administrators, his books ranging from Cultural Literacy , to his "Core Knowledge Series," to his most recent book, The Schools We Need and Why We Don't Have Them can be found in bookstores across the country. Both conservatives such as Chester Finn and liberals such as Henry Louis Gates have supported his "Core Knowledge Series." Beneath the appealing titles and approaches, what is Hirsch's basic message? What are the assumptions underpinning his message? Most important, what are the implications of Hirsch's approach to education in a multicultural society?

What is the nature of the relationship which links a work to its creator or producer? Expressivism: Is the artist / author the source or cause or origin of the work? If so, what does s/he impart to the work? Do works express his / her inmost ideas, emotions, personality, self, intention? Is the goal of criticism to grasp the author's thoughts, emotions, personality, self, intention? If so, what are the criteria for determining that this task has been accurately accomplished? The Death of the 'Author': Is the artist / author (or at least our grasp thereof) an effect or product, rather than cause or origin, of the work we criticise? To what degree does the knowledge of the artist / author which we derive from a work correspond to the real biographical artist / author who created the work?
