The Wailing Wind is Mr. Hillermanâs 18th JoeÊLeaphorn/Jim Chee mystery, The Sinister Pig his latest. Mr.ÊHillerman is a former journalist and English professor who also writes non-fiction. His honors include The Center for the American Indian Ambassador Award, the Silver Spur Award for the Best Novel Set in the West and the Navajo Tribeâs Special Friend Award. Mr. Hillerman calls his memoir Seldom Disappointed 3:43 secs Native American cultures and religions are worth taking seriously. Tony Hillerman is convinced theyâre just too important to let fade away. Heâs written nearly 20 mystery novels set in the American Southwest, half a dozen non-fiction books and scores of articles to give regular people access to information once buried in monographs and museum archives. Mr. Hillerman has a genius for giving garden-variety Americans a glimpse of worlds once hidden within spectacular landscapes that embody their own mysteries. But Mr. Hillerman wants more he also wants young Indians to see their culture taken seriously by white people These cultures and religions are as different from each other as they are from mainstream America, he assures us. AndÊMr. Hillerman has a bounty of stories with which to make his points. Consider, he suggests, how different the concept of time is for the Navajo and the Hopi. Heâs never known a Navajo who could tell him a word for ãlateä or ãearly.ä Not so the Hopi. When the two nations schedule a meeting to negotiate an issue, the Hopi are enraged when the Navajo fail to appear at the appointed time.

This is the first full-length examination of his work. One of the most successful contemporary American writers, Hillerman has made his stories of Native American detectives instrumental in understanding modern American life. Through the creation of his Navajo detective characters, Hillerman has given new vigor to the popular genre of mystery fiction with his treatment of the problems of order and identity in modern society. This study examines each of his 13 novels in turn and includes a biographical chapter and a chapter on his innovations in the genre of detective fiction. This careful study of the narrative techniques and thematic investigations of Hillerman's detective fiction illuminates the way he has crafted a new and profound method for understanding the conditions of modern life. A biographical chapter traces the influence of his life on his writing. Individual chapters on his novels are divided into sections on setting, plot, generic conventions, character development, and themes. In addition, Reilly offers alternate approachessuch as feminist criticism or post-colonialismfrom which to read the novel, which gives the reader another perspective on the fiction. This study discusses all of Hillerman's novels:

The First Eagle
Tony Hillerman
HarperCollins 1998 A book review by Danny Yee The First Eagle is not as gripping as some of Hillerman's novels: genuine suspense and tension are limited, with our heroes never in real danger. There's enough to the plot to keep us turning the pages, however, and Hillerman as always offers plenty more. As well as ongoing personal relationships and the detailed setting (Navajo and Hopi culture and the natural landscape of the Southwest), here we also get a glimpse into the world of science. Newcomers will probably be better off starting with one of the earlier novels, but Hillerman fans won't be disappointed by The First Eagle 14 June 1999

Tony Hillerman: The Shape Shifter
It's been over 35 years since Tony Hillerman wrote his first mystery, The Blessing Way. I don't know when I began reading his books, because once I did, I quickly read all the books that were available, and made a couple vacation trips to the desert southwest. I've been a fan of Hillerman's books ever since.
Now, whenever I read one of his books, I think it might be his last. He is, after all, over 80 at least 15 years beyond the age of retirement. He's been married almost as long as I've been alive. He could have stopped writing a long time ago and not even his most fanatic fans would be justified in comlaining too much.
A couple years ago, I read Skeleton Man and really liked it, even though it didn't quite measure up to A Thief of Time . I thought that Skeleton Man could be a respectable way to end a writing career.
But
