Author Tony Hillerman Anthony Hillerman was born in Sacred Heart, Oklahoma, on May 27, 1925, at the dawn of the Dust Bowl. The youngest of August and Lucy Grove Hillerman's three children, Tony and his older brother and sister helped his parents run a general store and work the family farm. From 1930 to 1938, he became one of several farm boys to attend St. Mary's Academy, a boarding school for Native American girls. Pottawatomie Indians were his compatriots in baseball and cotton chopping ordinary farm kids just like him. Not until he was home on leave from World War II did he come across Native Americans who seemed at all different. Driving a truck cross country to earn money, he encountered Navajos (the Dineh), who were engaged in a ritual curing ceremony on the reservation in northwestern New Mexico. Hillerman was fascinated. The experience created a lasting impression of a generous, deeply religious, and hospitable people whose approach to life he valued.

    Biography
Tony Hillerman was born in Sacred Heart, Oklahoma on May 27, 1925. At that time, Oklahoma was the dumping ground for numerous Native American tribes displaced from their hereditary lands. Many of Hillerman’s friends and classmates in Sacred Heart were Native Americans. His introduction to this culture provides the foundation for most of his best-selling crime novels. "I know what I write about seems exotic to a lot of people but not for me", says Hillerman.
The Blessing Way in 1970. Hillerman has since become one of the most successful fiction crime writers and wonderful storyteller "I’ve been a newspaperman most of my life," he says, "I don’t have to look for ideas. I’ve heard most of them."
Hillerman is also a respected portrayer of traditional Navajo culture. He carefully researches each book to provide an accurate depiction of Navajo life. He has received many awards including, the Mystery Writers of America Grandmaster Award in 1989, an Edgar Award for Dance Hall of the Dead in 1974, and the Special Friends of the Dinee Award by the Navajo Nation in 1987. He says, "I never intended to write the Great American Novel. I wanted to write books that told stories."

The Wailing Wind - Tony Hillerman
Written by Deano Published January 30, 2004 See also: Book Review: Illicit - How Smugglers, Traffickers and Copycats are Hijacking the Global Economy by Moises Naim Book Review: ... by Sam Seder and Stephen Sherrill I like a good mystery. I started reading Sherlock Holmes in high school, thrilled with The Hound of the Baskervilles , and then moved onto more hard-boiled characters such as the Travis McGee series by John D. MacDonald, Robert B. Parker's Spenser novels and others. After reading Gorky Park (centered on a grisly murder in a Moscow park, back in the good old, bad old USSR-days), I developed a taste for mysteries with unique settings. Someone pointed me at Tony Hillerman and I have remained a faithful reader ever since. Tony Hillerman's books are set on the Navajo Reservation of the American south-west, the Four Corners (where Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and Utah meet). Blending the dusty beauty of the extraordinary landscape with the voice of the Dinah, the Navajo, Hillerman has created a unique and fascinating setting and ethos for his stories. The Wailing Wind finds his two staple characters, the now retired, legendary lieutenant of the Navajo Tribal Police (who patrol an area in excess of 27,000 sq. miles), Joe Leaphorn, and the younger, slightly more muddled, Navajo traditionalist Sergeant Jim Chee, investigating the labyrinthine connections between an abandoned pick-up truck with dead body, a long-lost gold mine, a two-year old shooting, and La Llorana, the Wailing Women of the south-west.

[Book Review] THE SHAPE SHIFTER by Tony Hillerman
    Fiction/ Mystery
Alice Kendall reviews THE SHAPE SHIFTER by Tony Hillerman (Harper Collins, 2006)
Joe Leaphorn, retired from the Navajo Tribal Police, has no worries about how to spend his time. Given his years of solving crimes and his contacts in and out of law enforcement, people just naturally turn to him when they think something is not as it should be. Mel Bork, an old acquaintance who used to work with the FBI, contacts him about an old Navajo blanket that was supposed to have burned in a fire. The fire was memorable because the body of one of the FBI’s “most wanted” was found in the ashes. Now, the blanket is apparently part of a private collection and Mel Bork is missing. Enlisting Jim Chee and Bernie Manuelito, who are (finally) married and back from their honeymoon, to do some research for him, Joe does the leg work to see if he can solve the mystery of the reappearing blanket and the missing investigator.
Tony Hillerman’s numerous awards include the Center for American Indian’s Ambassador Award and the Navajo Tribe’s Special Friend Award. One of the joys of reading his books is his understanding and portrayal of the Navajo beliefs. In

They ask because Leaphorn, aided by officers Jim Chee and Bernie Manuelito, always delivers. The original case involved a priceless, one-of-a-kind Navajo rug supposedly destroyed in a fire. Suddenly, what looks like the same rug turns up in a magazine spread. And the man who brings the photo to Leaphorn's attention has gone missing. Leaphorn must pick up the threads of a crime he'd thought impossible to untangle. Not only has the passage of time obscured the details, but it also appears that there's a murderer still on the loose. Thomas Perry, Kirk Mitchell, Margaret Coel, James Doss, Sandra Prowell, Dana Stablenow, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, Louis Owens, and Linda Hogan have all been direct beneficiaries, gaining an audience for their own worthy endeavors. Less directly, Rudolfo Anaya, Mardi Oakley Medawar, Michael McGarrity, Judith Van Gieson, J. A. And he provides a target to aspire to, because none of them has surpassed the best of Hillerman's Navajo mysteries.
