The energetic 83-year-old multi-instrumentalist may have left New York for Florida, but he's far from settled and nowhere near retirement. His visionary conception of complex composition and spontaneous creation, unmistakably manifest in the imaginative music of his trio and orchestra, remains revolutionary and yet, unfortunately, largely underestimated by the musical establishment.

Uplands Farm is comprised of open fields , ash and oak hedgerows, vernal pools, upland woods and farm buildings. All were strongly affected by past human activities such as farming and animal grazing. If left undisturbed, the Upland Farm fields would eventually revert back to woodlands, but the fields are mowed to provide habitat diversity and open space, both of which are rapidly disappearing from Long Island. Location: Cold Spring Harbor, Suffolk County, in northwestern Long Island
Size: 97 acres

EASTBROOK
[p. 75]
A.T. DINSMORE
Was born in Princeton, this county, on the 18th day of June, 1840. When he was but six years of age his parents came to New Castle, and two years later moved to Harbor Bridge. In 1852 they went to Morris, Ill., where they remained until 1866, when they came to Eastbrook. Mr. DINSMORE bought a farm here soon after, and 12 years ago he purchased an interest in the Hutchinson woolen factory. Three years later he opened up a general merchandise store in town and has continued in business the past nine years. Mr. D. has a good stock of general merchandise, and by strict attention to business has succeeded in building up a good trade. June 22, 1869 he was married to Sarah J. MCNICKLE, daughter of John M. MCNICKLE, of Eastbrook. By the marriage five [p. 76] children were born, three of whom are living, the oldest, being about 16 years of age. He has served in nearly every township capacity and was the village postmaster for five years, when he turned it over to John WADDINGTON. Mr. DINSMORE is industrious and is getting along very nicely in the world.
JAMES CRAIG
BOWMAN BROTHERS
The woolen men, who run the upper woolen mill, commenced business in 1884. The brothers, R.D. and T.A. BOWMAN, came from Allentown, N.Y., where they had been engaged in the oil business. Both were born in Butler county, R.D. in 1849 and T.A. in 1862. In 1874 R.D. was married to Hattie CORBETT, of Clarion county. The factory was built at last thirty-five years ago by John MCCARTNEY, and was purchased by the brothers from James CRAIG at the time stated above. It is the only woolen factory in the county where flannels and blankets are manufactured, as well as yarn. The woolen goods made by this firm are of a superior quality and can be purchased at a much lower rate than you can buy the same quality of goods in a store. The largest part of the goods are sold in Youngstown, while they should be sold in New Castle. The parties are gentlemen and good citizens.

His novel takes him back to roots of his ancestry
Email Print Text size By David Mehegan Globe Staff November 14, 2007 CAMBRIDGE - If Canada is a big empty space in the minds of many Americans, its history is even blanker, especially in black-white relations. Now Lawrence Hill, a Canadian who has written extensively on the African-Canadian experience and whose family story spans the US-Canada border, has written a novel, based on real events, that draws together the tangled racial history of Canada, the American colonies, Africa, and England. "Someone Knows My Name" is narrated by Aminata Diallo, an African Muslim girl captured by slave traders in 1757, sold in South Carolina, taught to read, then taken to New York. When revolution breaks out, she escapes from her owner and serves the British side. When slaves and free blacks who stayed with the crown are offered land in Nova Scotia at war's end, she helps make up the list of 3,000 persons to be evacuated. In Canada, the promise is broken. Twenty-eight years before the American establishment of Liberia, she accompanies the first back-to-Africa project, the 1792 migration of 1,200 former American slaves from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Freetown, Sierra Leone. Hill, who is 50 and lives near Toronto with his wife and five children, has migration in his own family background. His American parents, African-American sociologist Daniel Hill and Donna Bender Hill, a white woman, emigrated to Canada soon after they were married in Washington, D.C., in 1953. They raised three children, including Hill's older brother, singer-songwriter Dan Hill.
