Evil is not good's absence but gravity's

inert, violent, the suffrage of our days.
-Geoffrey Hill De Jure Belli ac Pacis Despite the extreme difficulty of these award-winning poemsdifficulty for which Geoffrey Hill, considered by some to be England's greatest living poet, is notoriousI like them very much. And there I find myself hoist on my own petard, having frequently raged against the obscurantism of authors like James Joyce , but now endorsing a poet who is nearly as impenetrable at times. So, first, let me acknowledge that I am willing to forgive more from Mr. Hill because I favor his dark moral/religious/political take on modern England, than I would be from someone who was just being obscure for obscurity's sake, say Joyce or Pynchon. Second, I do think we, justifiably, tend to give poets more leeway than novelists; after all, by the very effort they have to put in to achieving a chiseled brevity they earn some right to ask a little more effort of us readers. The nearly forty poems here do not fill even eighty pages, so if you have to read them once or twice, or ten times, it doesn't seem as onerous a task as trudging through hundreds of densely printed pages of a novel. Mr. Hill's themes and methods are signaled early on, in the title of the collection and in the epigraph :

Cloven, we are incorporate, our wounds simple but mysterious. We have some wherewithal to bide our time on earth. Endurance is fantastic; ambulances battling at intersections, the city intolerably en fªte. My reflexes are words themselves rather than standard flexures of civil power. In all of this Cassiopeia's a blessing as is steady Orion beloved of poets. Quotidian natures ours for the time being I do not know how we should be absolved or what is fate.
Fame is not fastidious about the lips which spread it. So long as there are mouths to reiterate the one name it does not matter whose they are. The fact that to the seeker after fame they are indistinguishable from each other and are all counted as equal shows that this passion has its origin in the experience of crowd manipulation. Do you agree with the selection? Click here and post your comments Genesis (1952), to the late Canaan (1996), Hill has not been afraid of great themes, and has shown a consistent integrity of voice and vision. In his best-known works, the mythic landscape of the Midlands is imbued with a rough magic that pervades the presiding geniuses, tutelary spirits, figures of history, folklore and legend, who speak of power, brutality and injustice, and to whom he gives harsh soliloquising voice. To contextualize the production and reception of poetry, with particular reference to relevant Biblical and theological discourses. Introduction to English Literature, Renaissance Literature, Romantic Literature and Contemporary Poetry.
    Module Content
The choice of texts studied reflects a variety of approaches to questions of belief and their relation to the writing of poetry. The chronological arrangement attempts to plot the historical evolution of such questions, and attention will be paid to intertextual connections as the module progresses. There will be a particular emphasis in this module upon enhancing close reading skills, and therefore longer works will be dealt with in extracts and selections rather than in their entirety. The pattern of study across the semester will be as follows: Week 1 Inferno and Purgatorio Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 Week 5 The Temple Week 6 : Isaac Watts, selected hymns Christopher Smart, extract from

    September Song
    Geoffrey Hill
born 19.6.32 - deported 24.9.42 Undesirable you may have been, untouchable you were not. Not forgotten or passed over at the proper time. As estimated, you died. Things marched, sufficient, to that end. Just so much Zyklon and leather, patented terror, so many routine cries. (I have made an elegy for myself it is true) September fattens on vines. Roses flake from the wall. The smoke of harmless fires drifts to my eyes. This is plenty. This is more than enough. Submitted by anne berton Added: Last Read: Viewed: 5423 times
