  • Patricia Highsmith 1921–1995
(Born Patricia Plangman; also wrote under the pseudonym Claire Morgan) American-born novelist, short story writer, and nonfiction writer. The following entry provides an overview of Highsmith's career. For further information on her life and works, see CLC , Volumes 2, 4, 14, and 42.
    INTRODUCTION
An American-born author who resided in Europe for most of her adult years, Highsmith is best known for her suspense novels, which challenge many of the conventional precepts of the genre. Highsmith avoided gimmicks and formulaic plots and concentrated on developing the motivations behind criminal behavior rather than apprehending the villain. The presence or absence of guilt for one's actions dominates Highsmith's fiction, and often the innocent characters suffer more than the guilty. Highsmith also frequently employed such dualistic pairings as the weak with the strong, and the sane with the insane to examine such themes as violence, morality, and self-delusion. Although Highsmith wrote numerous novels and short stories, she is most highly regarded for her novels that feature the character Tom Ripley, a charming, intelligent, and sophisticated murderer who is never brought to justice.

Highsmith’s work found a greater following in Europe than in her native United States. The author was born Mary Patricia Plangman in Fort Worth, Texas, but took her stepfather’s name after her mother remarried. She grew up in New York City, where she attended Julia Richmond High School and studied English, Latin, and Greek at Barnard College, Columbia University. She earned a bachelor’s degree in 1942. Highsmith moved to England in 1963. She later lived in France and in Switzerland. Highsmith’s writing was marked by the ability to render sinister and callous acts as normal behavior, leaving the reader with a feeling of moral ambivalence. In her first novel

Patricia Highsmith Strangers on a Train Mystery Movie Profile at MysteryNet Discuss Patricia Highsmith Mysteries Alfred Hitchcock Buy Tom Ripley Mystery Books by Patricia Highsmith Mystery Books ... True Crime Through the years we have had a chance to follow the extraordinarily eccentric life of Patricia Highsmith's Thomas Ripley, who surely must be one of the oddest series figures in crime fiction since Raffles, the gentleman crook , left the scene decades ago. The Ripley novels have been appearing since 1955 when The Talented Mr. Ripley first was published. The fifth and last, Ripley Under Water , came out in 1991. The first novel in the series is the strongest and probably the most bizarre. The Talented Mr. Ripley (1955) is truly a masterpiece of crime fiction, one to rival in weirdness Highsmith's first novel, Strangers on a Train , which Alfred Hitchcock made into such a wonderful film. At the beginning of this on-going saga the impecunious Mr. Ripley is hired to go to Europe to find the wayward son of a wealthy Boston couple. By the end of the novel Ripley has not only murdered his quarry, but he has also forged a will in his favor, financially setting himself up for life, and he has done all of this with apparently little cost to his conscience.

    Who is Patricia Highsmith?
ad_unit_target='mainAdUnit'; X Close this window Patricia Highsmith was one of the most talented American novelists and short story writers of the 20th century. She is well known for her claustrophobic crime thrillers and macabre short fiction. Many of her works, notably Strangers on a Train and The Talented Mr. Ripley , have been adapted to film. Patricia Highsmith was born Mary Patricia Plangman in Fort Worth, Texas on 19 January 1921. Her parents had divorced five months before Patricia's birth, and she spent her early childhood with her grandmother, who instilled in her a love of reading. Highsmith later moved in with her mother and stepfather, with whom her life was very stressful. Her relationship with her mother in particular was stormy and complicated. Highsmith studied English composition at Barnard College, graduating in 1942. She began writing professionally for various comic book publishers immediately after graduation, and she spent her twenties living in New York City and Mexico. Her first novel, Strangers on a Train , was published in 1950. It was fairly successful, but it was not until Hitchcock's 1951 adaptation of the novel that Highsmith's career really began to take off. In addition to

    THURSDAY TRAILBLAZER: Patricia Highsmith
The Talented Mr Ripley. Ripley's Game. Strangers on a Train. All came from the talented and slightly disturbed mind of Ms Patricia Highsmith, award-winning author of a ream of bestselling crime books which transcended 'genre fiction' (Not that genre fiction is a bad thing!) I had a Patricia Highsmith-filled summer a few years ago (I like a touch of darkness in my summer reading - too much sun is bad for you) and read all her Ripley books, some short stories and a couple of her other novels. It was a wonderful time! Highsmith was such a great writer with a brilliant talent for creating suspense from thin air, and making the reader care about eminently detestable characters (I found myself hoping Tom Ripley would get away with his crimes!) Her books are much more that whodunits and don't go in for any autopsy description or gore, she's much more interested in psychology and has surely influenced every female (and male) crime writer who followed her. Highsmith's own life was sometimes the inspiration for her fiction: she wrote a lesbian stalker story, Carol in 1953 (very controversial at the time, so she used a pseudonym) based to some extent on her own experience. It's thought to be the first openly gay novel with a happy ending!

Highsmith's novels reflect a psychological depth unusual in crime fiction. Many of her stories deal with the themes of guilt and the conflict between good and evil. Her works often center on a complex relationship between two men. She wrote in a dispassionate style that refused to judge the acts of her villains, sometimes portraying them in an almost sympathetic light.
