Patricia Highsmith (1921-1995) American mystery writer, whose works were especially successful in Europe. Highsmith has explored the psychology of guilt and abnormal behavior in a world without firm moral ground. Often her novels deal with questions of fading identity and double personality. She also published several volumes of short stories in the fields of fantasy, horror, and comedy. Alfred Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train was based on Highsmith's novel and her series character, Tom Ripley, has inspired several films. "But the beauty of the suspense genre is that a writer can write profound thoughts and have some sections without physical action if he wishes to, because the framework is an essentially lively story. Crime and Punishment is a splendid example of this. In fact, I think most of Dostoyevsky's books would be called suspense books, were they being published today for the first time. But he would be asked to cut, because of production costs." (from Plotting and Writing Suspense Fiction Patricia Highsmith was born in Fort Worth, Texas, and grew up in New York. Her parents, who separated before she was born, were both commercial artists. Her father was of German descent and she did not meet him until she was twelve - the surname Highsmith was from her stepfather. For much of her early life she was cared for by her maternal grandmother. Her great-grandmother Willi Mae was "a Scot, very practical, though with a great sense of humor, and very lenient with me," Highsmith later recalled.

edit Early life
Born Mary Patricia Plangman just outside Fort Worth Texas , she was raised first by her maternal grandmother and later by her mother and stepfather, who were both commercial artists. Highsmith's mother Mary divorced her father five months before her birth. The young Highsmith had an intense, complicated relationship with her mother and resented her stepfather, although in later years she sometimes tried to win him over to her side of the argument in her confrontations with her mother. According to Highsmith, her mother once told her that she had tried to abort her by drinking turpentine . Highsmith never resolved this love-hate relationship , which haunted her for the rest of her life, and which she fictionalized in her short story "The Terrapin", in which a young boy stabs his mother to death.

Patricia Highsmith Toronto. An hour after disembarking from a plane from Zurich, minutes after a leap through a hotel shower, Patiricia Highsmith, 66, has slipped into slacks and loafers to meet me, the press. The author of Strangers of a Train, the Ripley novels, and other suspense classics made into movies (Wim Wenders's The American Friend, from Ripley's Game remains the best-known European adaptation) introduces herself guardedly. "Call me Pat," she says, shaking hands. She is determined to be cooperative, though burnt in the past by other (rare) interviews. "I only know it takes weeks to recover, as if one had been in a car accident," she wrote in 1967. "I think J.D. Salinger is correct in granting no interviews, and in making no speeches." Twenty years after, Highsmith has been coaxed to take part in the Toronto International Festival of Authors, to read publicly from her latest novel, Found in the Street, and even to appear on a panel with other writers concerning books made over into films. This is a coup for the eight-year-old Toronto festival. No one can recall when Highsmith last left Europe to venture into the public arena in North America. Highsmith, however, sighs at the repeated press descriptions of her as a "recluse." "It's because I prefer to live in the country where it's quiet." Where exactly she won't say, though it is in a two-street town in the Italian part of Switzerland, three-and-a-half hours from Zurich. "Woody Allen movies there are dubbed into Italian," she says.

Plotting And Writing Suspense Fiction by Patricia Highsmith - Review

Patricia Highsmith was the successful author of many suspense thrillers, including Strangers on a Train, which Alfred Hitchcock made into a compelling movie in 1951, and The Talented Mr Ripley. In Plotting And Writing Suspense Fiction Highsmith shares her writing life, letting us into her thought processes around many of her books and short stories.
As such, Plotting And Writing Suspense Fiction reads like a pleasant chat with this talented author. The book is geared towards beginner writers, but more experienced writers might also enjoy this as a light read on the subject if they are fans of, or at least familiar with, Highsmith’s work.
The second half of Plotting And Writing Suspense Fiction contains a study of Highsmith’s novel The Glass Cell , and is very interesting for writers of any level. While knowledge of this book can add more insight, it is not necessary to have read it beforehand, unless you wish to avoid spoiling the ending for a later reading. Highsmith references many of her novels and short stories, and those of other suspense writers, and some of the shorts in particular may now be almost impossible to track down. Nevertheless her descriptions and analyses of these are fully sufficient to illustrate her discussions.

Synopsis Therese first glimpses Carol in the New York department store where she is working as a sales assistant. Carol is choosing a present for her daughter; she looks preoccupied, exuding an aura of elegance as perfect as a secret. Standing ther at the counter, Therese is wholly unprepared for the first shock of love.
First published under a psuedonym in 1952, Carol is a love story told with compelling wit and eroticism, and consummate tenderness. Biography Patricia Highsmith was born in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1921. Her first novel, Strangers on a Train, was made into a film by Alfred Hitchcock in 1951. The Talented Mr Ripley, published in 1955, was awarded the Edgar Allan Poe Scroll by the Mystery Writers of America and introduced the anti-hero Tom Ripley, who was to appear in several of her later crime novels. Patricia Highsmith spent much of her life in England, France and Switzerland. She died in Locarno, Switzerland, in February 1995. Her last novel, Small g: A Summer Idyll, was published posthumously just over a month later. Contributors Testimonials I first read Carol as a teenager, drawn to the Edward Hopper portrait on the cover. I always judge a book by its cover. It was a painting of two women framed by the window of an otherwise empty late night diner: appropriate as Carol uttterly transports the reader to a very 1950s New York. It is told from the point of view of Therese, an articulate but touchingly naive young woman who has taken a temporary job in a department store at Christmas time, and who finds with a shock that she has locked eyes with a customer.

I found very interesting Highsmith’s discussion of the use of “gimmicks” sometimes used by mediocre writers to cover up a formulaic plot. These could include scientific or forensic jargon or detailed police procedure, or even the holding back of important details from the reader which would allow them to solve the mystery too easily. Highsmith believes that suspense books don’t need tricks and formulae if they are well-written. Although the suspense genre is by nature a lighter read than a more literary book, Highsmith sees no reason why it shouldn’t be strongly plotted and contain well-rounded characters.

In a cruel twist of irony, Texas-born Patricia Highsmith (1921-1995) is being recognized only after her death for her inestimable genius in her native land. With the savage humor of Waugh and the macabre sensibility of Poe, she brought a distinctly contemporary acuteness to her prolific body of noir fiction.
Thirty years before David Lynch's Blue Velvet , Highsmith's novels and stories shattered the cool veneer of idyllic American suburbia. Living in self-imposed exile in Switzerland and France for most of her life, Highsmith, from this far-off vantage point, felt the freedom to express her uniquely haunting literary imagination.

However, her parents were divorced four months before she was born. When Patricia was three her mother then married Stanley Highsmith. For much of her early life she was cared for by her maternal grandmother. She was educated at Barnard College, where she studied English Latin, and Greek, earning her B.A. in 1942. As a child and in his youth Highsmith showed talents in arts - she painted and remained talented sculptor, but she had determined to be a writer. She had written as a teenager stories and after leaving college she worked with comic books, supplying the writers with plots. Before her first book, Highsmith had a number of jobs, including that of a saleswoman at a New York Store.
