By David Bowman Pages 1 I have it in my head to ask Carl Hiaasen, "Did you make up the word 'fellatrixes,' or is it a common Florida term?" The word appears in his new comic-thriller "Sick Puppy." It designates a woman who performs "world-class" fellatio. But Hiaasen and I are lunching at the Stanhope Hotel, across the street from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan. The atmosphere is too refined to discuss "fellatrixes." Instead I ask this native son of Florida if there is a term to describe native sons of Florida. "Endangered species," Hiaasen answers. "The bumper stickers have the state of Florida on them and the word 'native.' That's the badge of pride." Does he have one? "No. I'm not a big bumper-sticker guy." Hiaasen sips some coffee. "They did a survey before Hurricane Andrew hit in '92. At that time more than 70 percent of the people living in South Florida had never been through a hurricane. They moved to a place that back in the 1940s was getting hit two or three times a year by hurricanes. Between Palm Beach and the Keys there's probably 4 and a half million people living on the Gold Coast, which is a bull's-eye in terms of tropical storms. They don't know that. They don't care." A Stanhope waiter slides up for our order. It's noon. Still early for lunch. The place is empty. Subdued Fifth Avenue winter light flows in through sheer curtains. The emptiness only adds to the civilized feel somehow. Hiaasen orders salmon. That's a civilized thing to eat. I order it as well.

As the teen librarian here at the Pawtucket Public Library (Pawtucket, RI) I talk to the kids who come in the library, help them find books, suggest stuff to read and plan programs. Of course I'm not always at the desk so the blog is a way to still get the word out on what's happening in the library, what I'm reading and what's new.

Flush by Carl Hiaasen
Well, the audiobook I just finished today was very different from the previous one. Flush by Carl Hiaasen is about a Florida fisherman who sinks a gambling boat which has been dumping raw sewage into the water. Unfortunately he can't prove anything about the waste being flushed into the water so he takes matters into his own hands which means he ends up in jail!
Then his son and daughter concoct their own scheme to try and prove to the Coast Guard that the Coral Queen is really dumping into the water. Along the way the two run into a cast of characters who are very amusing and offer up a great twist in the story as well.
Although I listened to this story, I'm sure reading it would be great too because I liked his previous book written for kids your age

Carl Hiaasen knew by the ripe old age of six that he wanted to be a journalist. "My parents thought it was a little weird for a six-year-old to want a typewriter," the award-winning author said, "but my dad said, 'Get him a typewriter.' I was very lucky." Young Carl wrote sports stories, primarily. Then there were the long, accusatory letters he would type up and slip under his parents' bedroom door. "If they wouldn't let me do something I wanted to do, I would set out a whole specific argument about why they were wrong and I was right," he laughed. Today Hiaasen still writes angry diatribes about injustice, but in the form of a column for The Miami Herald Hoot , his first young adult book, not only tackles environmental issues, it also addresses a serious educational issue. In contemplating the leap to children's literature, Hiaasen was concerned about and motivated by the stigma boys still attach to reading "too much," and that they just don't have the same relationship to and excitement about books that girls do. "I remembered how important reading was for me at that age," Hiaasen said. He recalls devouring the Hardy Boys series, and "anything irreverent."

Carl Hiaasen (Alfred A. Knopf / $16.95) Best-selling novelist and passionate environmentalist Carl Hiaasen is at it again, this time displaying his sassy wit in a children’s book that is at once rambunctious and heartfelt. A delightful read even for “grown-ups,” Flush follows a young brother and sister as they uncover the mystery of the Coral Queen casino boat, whose operator is suspected of flushing sewage into Florida waters. Hiaasen’s previous children’s novel, Hoot — a Newbery Honor winner — gave The Nature Conservancy a starring role, wherein threatened land is ultimately donated to the organization. Emmy Nicklin

The soft-spoken 46-year-old native Floridian still has his easy smile and gentle collegiate manner intact, despite a couple grueling days at the Miami Book Fair. There, fellow Miami Herald columnist Dave Barry enlisted his help to fill in for the sidelined Stephen King in the all-author Rock Bottom Remainders band the previous evening. "I'm just learning the guitar, so it was pretty embarrassing," he admits. "I think they just wanted another target." If you got hooked on Hiaasen back in 1986 with his debut, Tourist Season, but have sensed a lack of righteous moral outrage at greedy developers and crooked politicians in the last few books, take heart: In

Stray Questions for:
Carl Hiaasen
By Dwight Garner Carl Hiaasen (Photograph: Elena Seibert) What are you working on?
Whose books are generally shelved next to yours in bookstores? How does it feel to be sitting between them? My books are shelved in different places, depending on the bookstore. Sometimes they can be found in the Mystery section, sometimes in the Humor department, and occasionally even in the Literature aisle, which is somewhat astounding. I am happiest when I see them on a shelf somewhere between Jim Harrison and Tony Hillerman, two of my favorite writers (and great characters, themselves).

I also live in Florida, and local paper places his articles sporadically.
He is very acidic, not kind, and I do not like such a method of presentation of a problem. He likes a seclusion, so let him stay where he is now. — Posted by val June 29th
