Are they going to get out of it? What's going to happen to these people? At that point you want [the reader] to care so much about and be so interested in the characters the good guys and the bad guys that they're going to keep turning the pages." Some little known facts about Carl Hiaasen: he's not keen on being interviewed. Despite the fact or maybe, because of the fact that he's been a newspaperman for closing in on three decades, he seems as excited about interviews as he might be about, say, a root canal or a bowel examination. He is not ungracious quite the opposite, in fact and at times he warms to his topic or to a particular question enough to unsheathe his almost legendary humor and parade out a few quick quips. As much as he doesn't like being interviewed however, he loathes having his photo taken. And when he tells us that he really doesn't like having his photo taken it is entirely unnecessary: it's apparent in every angle of his frame and every syllable of his body language while he's in front of the camera. During the photo shoot, standing next to Hiaasen and holding a reflector is almost painful for me: I am so conscious of his self-conscious sighs and his subconscious fidgeting. Before long, I want it to be over almost as badly as he does: his unhappiness is like a live thing.

In a little less than a century, the state of Florida has been transformed from a largely uninhabited swamp to the fourth-largest state in the union. And no one has written about that transformation more successfully than Carl Hiaasen.
Part humorist, part muckraker, his satirical novels about greed, crime and corruption in the Sunshine State have become fixtures on the best-seller list and embraced by influential literary critics who compare him to Mark Twain and H.L. Mencken.
He is also an award-winning children’s author and a former investigative reporter-turned-columnist for the Miami Herald.

Carl Hiaasen
Carl Hiaasen graduated from the University of Florida in 1974; he was honored by UF College of Journalism as an alumnus of distinction in 1992 and as a UF distinguished alumnus in 2003. He has an outstanding reputation as an investigative journalist. A three-time Pulitzer Prize nominee, Hiaasen is a columnist at The Miami Herald and has written over 1300 pieces exposing land corruption scams, drug smuggling rings, dangerous doctors, and corrupt politicians. For his journalism and commentary, Hiaasen received the Damon Runyon Award from the Denver Press Club in 2003-2004. As a best-selling author, Hiaasen’s books skewer the greedy and corrupt with intelligence and humor, combining mystery plotlines, wicked satire, sharp observations, and a bizarre cast of characters. Recent works include Sick Puppy and Skinny Dip. With his insight, humor, and a killer instinct for stories, Hiaasen has certainly earned the respect of his contemporaries. Dave Barry, his colleague at The Miami Herald, calls him "one of South Florida's most vital natural resources, a relentlessly sane voice in a howling hurricane of hypocrisy, hokum and hype.” Hiaasen began writing novels in the early 1980s with his good friend and distinguished journalist, the late William D. Montalbano. Together they wrote three mystery thrillers Powder Burn, Trap Line and Death in China which borrowed heavily from their own reporting experiences. Hiaasen's fiction mirrors his concerns as a journalist and Floridian. His novels have been classified as "environmental thrillers" and are usually found on the crime shelves in bookstores, although they can just as well be read as mainstream satires of contemporary life. Carl Hiaasen was born and raised in Florida, where he still lives with his family. More information is available at

BY RON HOGAN Carl Hiaasen's latest novel, Basket Case , is set in the anything-goes Florida he's written about in eight previous novels and his twice-weekly column for The Miami Herald . But it's the first novel he's written that features a journalist as the main character — Jack Tagger, a former investigative reporter who's been busted down to the obituary section for offending his corporate masters. When he realizes that the death notice that's just crossed his desk is about Jimmy Stoma, the former lead singer of Jimmy and the Slut Puppies, he thinks he may be on to a story... but nobody except Hiaasen could possibly anticipate the twists and turns his research takes. The novel also includes the lyrics to Jimmy and the Slut Puppies's biggest hit, also called "Basket Case," which is, in reality, a collaboration between Hiaasen and classic rocker Warren Zevon that appears on Zevon's new record.

- 07:44pm Feb 13, 1999 PST(# of 10) If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you. I love Carl Hiaasen's books. He has the greatest black sense of humor I have ever found in an author. His books are similar to Elmore Leonard's, but I find them infinitely better. spoonman - 09:28am Mar 4, 1999 PST(# of 10) Black Lizard recently published three older Hiaasen novels, and while they share some of the aspects of his later novels (Florida settings, etc.), they lack the humor which define a "Hiaasen" novel. Good reading none the less, but I'm a bigger fan of his last five or six books.
