Writers on Writing, Carl Hiaasen: Real Life, That Bizarre and Brazen Plagiarist
By CARL HIAASEN ne time I had to kill this guy. It was in a novel, but that didn't make it easy. My books are supposed to be funny, so even death should be carried out with a twist of wit. The pressure is wicked.
Mike Hentz for The New York Times Carl Hiaasen, whose latest book is "Sick Puppy," finds that his novels are often mimicked by current events, especially in Florida, his home. The bad guy in question, Pedro by name, was a sadistic security guard at a low-budget amusement park in the Florida Keys. Pedro was so addicted to anabolic steroids that he hooked himself to a rolling intravenous rig, which he dragged behind him on his rounds. Two-thirds of the way through the novel, which was called "Native Tongue," I decided it was time to get rid of Pedro he was growing nastier by the page and, worse, beginning to distract from the heroics of my protagonist. So Pedro had to go. But how to do the deed? Shooting him would be simple enough; overdosing him, tidy and quick. But I feared that readers wouldn't be satisfied. Heck

Carl Hiaasen is best known as the author of eleven novels, including the best-selling Sick Puppy and Skinny Dip , Carl also writes a popular weekly column for The Miami Herald , where he has established himself as one of the country's outstanding investigative journalists. A three-time Pulitzer Prize nominee, Carl Hiaasen has written over 1,300 pieces for The Miami Herald exposing land corruption scams, drug smuggling rings, dangerous doctors, and corrupt politicians. And since real life in South Florida is often stranger than fiction, none of these subjects are spared in his novels. Carl's fiction uses intelligence and humor to skewer the greedy and the corrupt, combining mystery plotlines, wicked satire, sharp observations, and a bizarre cast of characters. With his insight and his killer instinct for stories, Carl has certainly earned the respect of his contemporaries. Dave Barry, his colleague at The Herald The New York Times compares him to Preston Sturges, Woody Allen, and S.J. Perelman, and

Joey Perrone is a woman with a mission, for she's just been pushed overboard from a cruise liner into the icy Atlantic Ocean by Chaz, her less-than-caring husband - and survived to tell the tale.
She knows that Chaz is not the brightest marine scientist in the world - hell, he can't even work out which way the Gulf Stream runs. And if there's one place he hates it's the Florida Everglades, an area he's supposed to be working to protect. Chaz is on to something though, and it's something so big and so lucrative that it's worth killing for.
Joey turns to the man who's pulled her from the sea: former cop, current loner, Mick Stranahan. And with a little help from her friends, Mick's dog, and a few of Chaz's enemies, they hit on a scheme that should drive Chaz mad, while allowing Joey to get even.

Carl Hiaasen
Carl Hiaasen
has written one of the most-entertaining series of novels in a long time. Tony Hillerman even calls him "the Mark Twain of the crime novel." A case could almost be made that his "Florida" novels, starting with Tourist Season in 1986, are the funniest, wildest, zaniest private eye novels books Jonathan Latimer cut loose with Bill Crane except for one thing: there's no real series character here. Or even, often, a private eye.... Still, a case could be made. The only recurring characters in the series are Skink , the former-governor of Florida and present swamp-rat, now living somewhere in the Everglades, and swooping out of the wilds every now and then to scoop up some delicious roadkill, and the long-suffering homicide detective, Sergeant Al Garcia (Zorro fan's take note!), cursed with the memory of every corpse he's ever had the displeasure to meet. But, like I said, except for a few of books, the lead character is never actually a "PI." However, the hero in each and every novel, while never the same man, is pretty much cut from the same cloth. They're all relatively young, but with enough disillusionment and experience in their lives to make up for it. They're usually former something-or-others (often journalists), who failed or burned out, adrift, wandering through life, walking wounded, although they generally view their lethargy as fine with them. It's usually a women in trouble that snaps them out of it, with or without some provocation from Skink. Suddenly, they have a cause to champion, and sooner or later Sgt. Garcia shows up to bear witness to the body count.

    Review from Amazon.com:
Roy Eberhardt is the new kidagain. This time around it's Trace Middle School in humid Coconut Grove, Florida. But it's still the same old routine: table by himself at lunch, no real friends, and thick-headed bullies like Dana Matherson pushing him around. But if it wasn't for Dana Matherson mashing his face against the school bus window that one day, he might never have seen the tow-headed running boy. And if he had never seen the running boy, he might never have met tall, tough, bully-beating Beatrice. And if he had never met Beatrice, he might never have discovered the burrowing owls living in the lot on the corner of East Oriole Avenue. And if he had never discovered the owls, he probably would have missed out on the adventure of a lifetime. Apparently, bullies do serve a greater purpose in the scope of the universe. Because if it wasn't for Dana Matherson...
In his first novel for a younger audience, Carl Hiaasen (Basket Case, etc.) plunges readers right into the middle of an ecological mystery, made up of endangered miniature owls, the Mother Paula's All-American Pancake House scheduled to be built over their burrows, and the owls' unlikely alliesthree middle school kids determined to beat the screwed-up adult system. Hiaasen's tongue is firmly in cheek as he successfully cuts his slapstick sense of humor down to kid-size. Sure to be a hoot, er, hit with middle school mystery fans. (Ages 10 to 15) Jennifer Hubert
