Presented on this page are notes I've collected concerning the relationship between T.S. Eliot and Hermann Hesse . Read the entire page. Notes are made on a book by book basis and notes from one book can elaborate on notes from other books.
Synopsis of findings
As can be seen from these notes there was not much interaction between the two poets and writers. Eliot read Hesse 's Blick ins Chaos in German and admired it enough to give it a citation in his own The Waste Land . He was involved in getting it translated into English and republished, the Dostoyevsky essays in

Life and Works:

German poet and novelist, who has explored in his work the duality of spirit and nature, body versus mind and individual's spiritual search outside the restrictions of the society. Several of Hesse's novels depict the protagonist's journey into the inner self. A spiritual guide assists the hero in his quest for self-knowledge. His novels are lyrical and confessional. Hermann Hesse was born on July 2, 1877, in the Black Forest town of Calw in the German state of Württemberg, to a family of Pietist missionaries and religious publishers. Johannes Hesse, his father, was born a Russian citizen in Weissenstein, Estonia. Hesse's mother, Marie Gundert, was born in Talatscheri, India, as the daughter of the Pietist missionary and Indologist, Hermann Gundert. The Hesse family had lived in Calw since 1873, where they operated a missionary publishing house under the direction of Hesse's grandfather, Hermann Gundert. In 1880 the family moved to Basel, Switzerland, for six years, then returned to Calw. His parents expected him to follow the family tradition in theology. After successful attendance at the Latin School in Göppingen, Hesse began to attend the Evangelical Theological Seminary in Maulbronn in 1891. Here in March 1892, Hesse showed his rebellious character: he fled from the Seminary and was found in a field a day later.

He was posthumously turned into a cult figure of the 1960s and 1970s in the English-speaking world for his celebration of Eastern mysticism and the search for self. Hesse was born on July 2, 1877, in Calw, Germany. The son of a former missionary, he was enrolled in a seminary but soon left school; his rebellion against formal education was expressed in the novel Unterm Rad (1906; Beneath the Wheel, 1958). Thereafter, he educated himself through reading. As a young man he worked for a bookseller and did freelance journalism, which inspired his first novel, Peter Camenzind (1904; trans. 1961), the story of a dissolute writer who rejects society in favour of a vagabond existence.

German writer, a Swiss citizen from 1923. A conscientious objector in World War I and a pacifist opponent of Hitler, he published short stories, poetry, and novels, including Peter Camenzind Siddhartha (1922), and Steppenwolf (1927). Later works, such as (1943), show the influence of Indian mysticism and Jungian psychoanalysis. Above all, Hesse was the prophet of individualism. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1946.
Life
Fiction
His early novels, with their vivid portrayal of natural scenery and small-town life, are reminiscent of Gottfried Keller . They are remarkable for their musical prose and sympathetic portrayal of childhood. Siddhartha contains many autobiographical hints. It describes a young man's revolt against the orthodox religious views of his father and his growing interest in Indian mysticism.
