Autobiography
I was born in Calw in the Black Forest on July 2, 1877. My father, a Baltic German, came from Estonia; my mother was the daughter of a Swabian and a French Swiss. My father's father was a doctor, my mother's father a missionary and Indologist. My father, too, had been a missionary in India for a short while, and my mother had spent several years of her youth in India and had done missionary work there.
My childhood in Calw was interrupted by several years of living in Basle (1880-86). My family had been composed of different nationalities; to this was now added the experience of growing up among two different peoples, in two countries with their different dialects.
Peter Camenzind , written in Basle and set in Switzerland, had a quick success. I gave up selling books, married a woman from Basle, the mother of my sons, and moved to the country. At that time a rural life, far from the cities and civilization, was my aim. Since then I have always lived in the country, first, until 1912, in Gaienhofen on Lake Constance, later near Bern, and finally in Montagnola near Lugano, where I am still living.
Soon after I settled in Switzerland in 1912, the First World War broke out, and each year brought me more and more into conflict with German nationalism; ever since my first shy protests against mass suggestion and violence I have been exposed to continuous attacks and floods of abusive letters from Germany. The hatred of the official Germany, culminating under Hitler, was compensated for by the following I won among the young generation that thought in international and pacifist terms, by the friendship of

(German novelist. short-story writer, poet, and essayist,
born 2 July 1877, Calw; died 9 Aug.1962, Montagnola, Switzerland) Peter Camenzind Peter Camenzind, 1961), brought him suceess as an author, H. settled in Gaienhofen on Lake Constance. A journey to India in 1911 was the first in a series of important, if disappointing and even painful, personal experiences that shaped H.'s creative life during and after the years of World War I. The war itself was especially hidious to H., although during that time he worked with German prisoners and edited a newspaper for them, the Deutsche Internierten-Zeitung. Under the pressures of the prolonged illness of his oldest son and the mental illness of his wife, H. suffered a nervous breakdown. In 1916 he began a two-year period of psychoanalytic therapy administered by a disciple of C. G. Jung (q.v.), an experience that had significance for his subsequent literary works. When his unhappy marriage ended in divorce in 1919, H. moved to Montagnola, becoming a Swiss citizen in 1923. Among the honors H. received for his writings were the Goethe Prize of the City of Frankfurt and the Nobel Prize, in 1946, and the Peace Prize of the German Bookdealers' Association, in 1955. Hesse began his literary career as a lyric poet. His

Above all we forget that we ourselves are a part of history, that we are the product of growth and are condemned to perish if we lose the capacity for further growth and change. We are ourselves history and share the responsibility for world history and our position in it. But we gravely lack awareness of this responsibility.

Z Hermann Hesse Biography Hermann Hesse (July 2, 1877 - August 9, 1962) was a German author, and the winner of the 1946 Nobel Prize in literature. He is most famous for his novels Steppenwolf and Das Glasperlenspiel (The Glass Bead Game).
Hesse's interests in existential, spiritual, and mystical themes and Buddhist and Hindu philosophy may be seen in his works.
Born on July 2, 1877 in Calw, Württemberg, Hesse emigrated to Switzerland in 1912 and in 1923 became a Swiss citizen.
A staunch pacifist, Hesse opposed World War I strongly, the residual fallout of his feelings towards war can be seen in many of his books. During World War II his writings found strange allies. German propagandist Joseph Goebbels initially defended Hesse's books, and as a result he was allowed to continue writing unmolested. However, after he demanded that certain portions in his book Narcissus and Goldmund dealing with pogroms be untouched, he found himself on the Nazi's blacklist. Despite this omnious bidding Hesse escaped World War II unharmed.
A prominent feature of many of his books, Hesse had many problems throughout his life with women. His first marriage with Maria Bernoulli, from whom he had three children, ended sadly, his wife having mental problems. His second marriage was apparently a brief flame with Ruth Wenger, lasting only a few months. He finally married Ninon Dolbin in 1931, and remained with her for the rest of his life.

2. Juli: Hermann Hesse wird als Sohn des pietistischen Missionars Johannes Hesse und dessen Frau Marie (geb. Gundert) in Calw geboren.
Erste literarische Arbeiten entstehen.
Hesses erste Lyriksammlung "Romantische Lieder" erscheint.

Hermann Hesse
author of the classic novel Siddhartha (1922), about the founder of Buddhism
Hermann Hesse is well known as the author of the classic 1922 novel Siddhartha , about the founder of Buddhism. Hermann Hesse received the Nobel Prize in Literature. With regards to his religious background, Hesse is quoted as having said: "Christianity... was the strongest of the powers that shaped and moulded me." Hermann Hesse has been classified in some sources as a Buddhist. Based on quotes by Hesse about his beliefs regarding God, researcher Tihomir Dimitrov believes that Hesse was not a Buddhist. Contrary to what some Westerners believe, the majority of the world's Buddhists actually do believe in God or some form of supreme being. Simply having belief in God does not necessarily mean that a person is not a Buddhist. The subject of Hesse's religious affiliation requires further research. From: Tihomir Dimitrov, "Hermann Hesse" (Part II: Chapter 32) in 50 Nobel Laureates and Other Great Scientists Who Believe in God (2007), (http://nobelists.net/; viewed 19 April 2007):

Transpira santidades y pasiones groseras,
