by Robert Herrick (1591 - 1674)
A sweet disorder in the dress
Kindles in clothes a wantonness:
A lawn about the shoulders thrown
Into a fine distraction
An erring lace, which here and there
Enthrals the crimson stomacher
A cuff neglectful, and thereby
Ribbands to flow confusedly
A winning wave, deserving note, In the tempestuous petticoat A careless shoe-string, in whose tie I see a wild civility Do more bewitch me than when art Is too precise in every part. back to poetry index

ROBERT HERRICK - Born 1591 : Died 1674
Those who most admire the Poet from whose many pieces a selection only is here offered, will, it is probable, feel most strongly (with the Editor) that excuse is needed for an attempt of an obviously presumptuous nature. The choice made by any selector invites challenge: the admission, perhaps, of some poems, the absence of more, will be censured:Whilst others may wholly condemn the process, in virtue of an argument not unfrequently advanced of late, that a writer's judgment on his own work is to be considered final. And his book to be taken as he left it, or left altogether; a literal reproduction of the original text being occasionally included in this requirement. If poetry were composed solely for her faithful band of true lovers and true students, such a facsimile as that last indicated would have claims irresistible; but if the first and last object of this, as of the other Fine Arts, may be defined in language borrowed from a different range of thought, as 'the greatest pleasure of the greatest number,' it is certain that less stringent forms of reproduction are required and justified. The great majority of readers cannot bring either leisure or taste, or information sufficient to take them through a large mass (at any rate) of ancient verse, not even if it be Spenser's or Milton's. Manners and modes of speech, again, have changed; and much that was admissible centuries since, or at least sought admission, has now, by a law against which protest is idle, lapsed into the indecorous. Even unaccustomed forms of spelling are an effort to the eye;a kind of friction, which diminishes the ease and enjoyment of the reader.

LIFE OF ROBERT HERRICK
Alfred Pollard's Introduction.
Herrick, Robert. The Works of Robert Herrick . Vol. I. Alfred W. Pollard, Ed.
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1891. xv-xxvi. OF the lives of many poets we know too much; of some few too little. Lovers of Herrick are almost ideally fortunate. Just such a bare outline of his life has come down to us as is sufficient to explain the allusions in his poems, and, on the other hand, there is no temptation to substitute chatter about his relations with Julia and Dianeme for enjoyment of his delightful verse. The recital of the bare outline need detain us but a few minutes: only the least imaginative of readers will have any difficulty in filling it in from the poems themselves.  From early in the fourteenth century onwards we hear of the family of Eyrick or Herrick at Stretton, in Leicestershire. At the beginning of the sixteenth century we find a branch of them settled in Leicester itself, where John Eyrick, the poet's grandfather, was admitted a freeman in 1535, and afterwards acted as Mayor. This John's second son, Nicholas, migrated to London, became a goldsmith in Wood Street, Cheapside, and, according to a licence issued by the Bishop of London, December 8, 1582, married Julian, daughter of William Stone, sister of Anne, wife of Sir Stephen Soame, Lord Mayor of London in 1598. The marriage was not unfruitful. A William *Herrick was baptised at St. Vedast's, Foster Lane, November 24, 1585; Martha, January 22, 1586; Mercy, December 22, 1586; Thomas, May 7, 1588; Nicholas, April 22, 1589; Anne, July 26, 1590; and Robert himself, August 24, 1591.

Giving voice to the poetry of the past. The Bracelet: To Julia
by Robert Herrick (1591 – 1674) Why I tie about thy wrist,
Julia, this silken twist;
For what other reason is 't
But to show thee how, in part,
Thou my pretty captive art?
But thy bond-slave is my heart:
'Tis but silk that bindeth thee,
Knap the thread and thou art free;
But 'tis otherwise with me: —I am bound and fast bound, so That from thee I cannot go; If I could, I would not so.

A sweet disorder in the dress
Kindles in clothes a wantonness:
A lawn about the shoulders thrown
Into a fine distraction:
An erring lace, which here and there

In the tempestuous petticoat:
A careless shoe-string, in whose tie I see a wild civility: Do more bewitch me, than when art Is too precise in every part.
Upon Julia's Clothes
When as in silks my Julia goes, Then, then (me thinks) how sweetly flows That liquefaction of her clothes. Next, when I cast mine eyes, and see That brave Vibration each way free; O how that glittering taketh me!
To His Conscience
Can I not sin, but thou wilt be My private protonotary? Can I not woo thee to pass by A short and sweet iniquity? I'll cast a mist and cloud upon My delicate transgression, So utter dark as that no eye Shall see the hugg'd impiety. Gifts blind the wise, and bribes do please, And wind all other witnesses;

Of what worth is Robert Herrick? That's the question on the table for my poetry class as we read through the Norton Anthology of Poetry.
I took the liberty of rewriting Herrick since I felt he took too many lines to say what he had to say:
"The Argument of His Book" [ original
Through lyric schmaltz and poems so cheeze ball,
I write of Hell ; I sing (and ever shall)
Of Heaven, and hope to have it after all.

The extreme scab take thee and thine for me.
"The Sour Reader to Robert Herrick" [this is the original] Of all the dreck that you have writ, I hope this is the worst of it. I actually liked his ode to a sour readerthat's me! Every poet needs to write one of these (
