Robert Herrick (1591-1674)
"Compared to such contemporaries as John Donne and George Herbert, Herrick seems light and tripping, going out of his way to demonstrate no very complex philosophical thought or religious passion (though his devotional verses are suitably austere), and never writing a love poem that speaks profoundly or intimately of the beloved." Thomas Crofts in The Cavalier Poets: An Anthology

    CHAPTER I
FROM time to time the door opened to admit some tardy person. Then the May sunlight without flooded the dim, long hall with a sudden radiance, even to the arched recess in the rear, where the coffin was placed. The late-comers sank into the crowd of black-coated men, who filled the hall to the broad stairs. Most of these were plainly dressed, with thick, grizzled beards and lined faces: they were old hands from the Bridge Works on the West Side, where they had worked many years for Powers Jackson. In the parlors at the left of the hall there were more women than men, and more fashionable clothes than in the hall. But the faces were scarcely less rugged and lined; for these friends of the old man who lay in the coffin were mostly life-worn and gnarled, like himself. Their luxuries had not sufficed to hide the scars of the battles they had waged with fortune. When the minister ceased praying, the men and the women in the warm, flower-scented rooms moved gratefully, trying to get easier positions for their cramped bodies. Some members of a church choir, stationed at the landing on the stairs, began to sing. Once more the

Executive summary: Hesperides English poet, born at Cheapside, London, and baptized on the 24th of August 1591. He belonged to an old Leicestershire family which had settled in London. He was the seventh child of Nicholas Herrick, goldsmith, of the city of London, who died in 1592, under suspicion of suicide. The children were brought up by their uncle, Sir William Herrick, one of the richest goldsmiths of the day, to whom in 1607 Robert was bound apprentice. He had probably been educated at Westminster school, and in 1614 he proceeded to Cambridge; and it was no doubt during his apprenticeship that the young poet was introduced to that circle of wits which he was afterwards to adorn. He seems to have been present at the first performance of The Alchemist in 1610, and it was probably about this time that

    Primary Research Interests
Large scale tectonic and volcanic history of the terrestrial planets. To date most of my work in this area has focused on the planet Venus, but I have recently started looking at Mars quite a bit. I like to combine imagery, topography, and geoid data to try and understand the big picture of how interior processes shape the surface now and over time. Impact craters occur continuously in time and in a spatially random manner. How they are altered by subsequent volcanic and tectonic processes provides insight into the geologic history of a planet, and this has been another of my areas of research.

    Research
Dr. Herrick's primary research focus is on the nature and properties of occupational exposures. Rapid global industrialization has created working environments in which people encounter a wide array of physical, chemical, biological, and psychosocial stresses. While there are a few examples of workplace exposures which pose distinctive and readily identifiable disease risks, such as asbestos and vinyl chloride, the association between exposure and work-related impairments, diseases, and injuries is rarely so clear. This research is directed to improving our ability to identify these associations where they exist, to evaluate their strength, and to use this information in developing methods of exposure control to prevent occupational disease and injury. This approach to exposure assessment also evaluates the influence of individual behaviors on the exposure process. We have begun to recognize that inter-individual variability in exposure is much greater than had been supposed, and the failure to account for this variability may result in substantial exposure misclassification in epidemiologic studies. Our research in this area is developing a task-centered approach to characterizing exposure by identifying specific work tasks, and the associated exposures with each to evaluate the variability between individual workers, as well as changes in the composition and intensity of exposure over time. In addition to providing better exposure information for classifying workers in epidemiologic studies, the task-based approach also helps identify specific operations and activities which make the greatest contribution to exposure for a work task, allowing the development of effective, targeted intervention methods to control exposure.
