Robert Herrick, Hesperides and Noble Numbers Genre: secular songs ( Hesperides ) and sacred songs ( Noble Numbers ) using a variety of neoclassical metaphors and poetic forms. Form: See entries for individual assigned works. Characters: "Herrick" , who bears some resemblence to the parson who reluctantly filled his clerical post in Dean Prior, Devonshire, when he could not get away to carouse with Ben Jonson and the rest in London; his various ( almost certainly fictitious ) mistresses with singularly unusual names; Prudence Baldwin , "once my maid" (and he means that in a housekeeping sense!). Individual Songs: Basically, look for Jonsonian neoclassical uses of metaphor, Donne-like experiments in short verse meter and rhyme, and a purely Herrickian sense of erotic play. Some essential poems for those of you studying for the GREs
  • "Delight in Disorder" which defines his aesthetic of "wild civility" and "The Lily in a Crystal" which continues to develop this interest in veiled beauty; "The Vine" and "His Farewell to Sack" which are excellent examples of his whimsey and Catullan freedom of expression;

Robert Herrick
From LoveToKnow 1911
ROBERT HERRICK (1591-1674), English poet, was born at Cheapside, London , and baptized on the 24th of August 1591. He belonged to an old Leicestershire family which had settled in London. He was the seventh child of Nicholas Herrick, goldsmith, of the city of London, who died in 1592, under suspicion of suicide . The children were brought up by their uncle, Sir William Herrick, one of the richest goldsmiths of the day, to whom in 1607 Robert was bound apprentice. He had probably been educated at Westminster school, and in 1614 he proceeded to Cambridge; and it was no doubt during his apprenticeship that the young poet was introduced to that circle of wits which he was afterwards to adorn. He seems to have been present at the first performance of The Alchemist in 1610, and it was probably about this time that Ben Jonson adopted him as his poetical "son." He entered the university as fellow-commoner of St John's College, and he remained there until, in 1616, upon taking his degree, he removed to Trinity Hall. A lively series of fourteen letters to his uncle, mainly begging for money, exists at Beaumanoir , and shows that Herrick suffered much from poverty at the university. He took his B.A. in 1617, and in 1620 he became master of arts. From this date until 1627 we entirely lose sight of him; it has been variously conjectured that he spent these years preparing for the ministry at Cambridge, or in much looser pursuits in London. In 1629 (September 30) he was presented by the king to the vicarage of

Robert Herrick is buried in Dean Prior Church, Devon, England. (See map...ref no. 4) He is buried in an unmarked grave but is commemorated by a tablet and a stained glass window in the church. Near the door, a showcase contains his poetical works. Herrick was vicar at Dean Prior from 1629-1647 and again from 1662 to the end of his life. At first he was repelled by rural life but over time became accustomed to it. He was said to be a dynamic preacher who once threw his sermon at an inattentive congregation. Herrick is renowned for his highly crafted lyrics on the subject on human mortality. A.C. Swinburne

    http://www.hymnsandcarolsofchristmas.com/Hymns_and_Carols/Biographies/robert_her
    Robert Herrick Source: Henry Vizetelly, Christmas With The Poets (London: David Bogue, 1851). Among all our English poets, the one, who has left us by far the most complete contemporary picture of the Christmas season, was a country clergyman of the reign of Charles I., who held a small living in a remote part of Devonshire. Robert Herrick, for it is of him we speak, was born in London, received his early education, it is supposed, at Westminster School, from whence he removed to Cambridge, and after taking his degree, spent some few years in London, in familiar intercourse with the chief wits, and writers of the age. Herrick had for his early intimates Ben Jonson, Seldon, William Lawes the eminent composer, and Endymion Porter, groom of the chamber to the King, besides many others of equal note, and it was with regret that he resigned the enjoyment of their society, to enter upon the duties connected with the living of Dean-Prior's, to which he was presented in 1620. For near twenty years, until he was ejected from his cure by the committee appointed by the Long Parliament, on account of his Royalist opinions, he led the retired life of a country priest; and, during this period, it would appear that most of his poems were written descriptive of the ceremonies, superstitions, and festivities of the Christmas season. On leaving Dean-Prior's, deeply regretted by his parishioners, who styled him their "ancient and famous poet," — and Herrick was then fifty-seven years of age — he moved to London, where he settled down at his "beloved Westminster."

The apprenticeship ended after only six years when Herrick, at age twenty-two, matriculated at St John's College , Cambridge. He graduated in 1617.
