Autobiography
My forebears all came from the United Kingdom. On my father's side, they migrated from London and County Derry in Northern Ireland to Londonderry, New Hampshire. When the American Revolution came, they, as loyalists, moved on to Canada. My father, grandfather and great-grandfather were born in St. Andrews, New Brunswick. In 1865, my grandfather, Andrew Hitchings, moved his family to Eureka, California. Andrew was a skilled craftsman in the building of wooden ships, and my father, George Herbert Hitchings, Sr., followed in his footsteps, eventually becoming a marine architect and master builder.
On my mother's side, Scottish and English prevailed. The first American was one Thomas Littlejohn from near Edinburgh, who came to the New World about 1735. His descendants, including Shaws, Eldridges and Thomases, moved about in the Maritime Provinces and New England. My maternal grandfather and great-grandfather were descendants of the Matthews family that emigrated twenty-four strong from near Glasgow to Prince Edward Island about 1800. My grandfather, Peter Matthews, married Sara Elizabeth Eldridge, and my mother, Lillian Matthews, was born in Maine. In 1875, my grandfather moved his family across the United States. He, too, was a shipbuilder and settled in Eureka.
My mother and father met and were married in Eureka, and my two sisters were born there. About 1897, Peter Matthews established a shipyard in Hoquiam, Washington, to build lumber carriers for the E.K. Wood Lumber Company. The company built several schooners a year. When Peter Matthews died, my father succeeded to the management, which then became Hitchings and Joyce. Later, my father was master builder and supervisor in Bellingham, Washington, and Coos Bay, Oregon, and between times he engaged in marine architecture. He worked in the period between sail and steam and was especially noted for the design of the transition vessel, the steam schooner, which had a wooden hull and was steam propelled.

Ability
Dwarf A handful of good life is worth a bushel of learning. Life A hundred load of worry will not pay an ounce of debt. Worry A poor beauty finds more lovers than husbands. Beauty A sad, wise valor is the brave complexion. Valor All comes from, and will go to others. Possession All foreign wisdom doth amount to this, To take all that is given, whether wealth, Or love, or language; nothing comes amiss: A good digestion turneth all to health. Wisdom All may have, if they dare try, a glorious life or grave. Ambition Be not too presumptuously sure in any business; for things of this world depend upon such a train of unseen chances that if it were in man's hands to set the tables, yet is he not certain to win the game. Chance Build castles in Spain.

  • George Herbert Mead "Through his teaching, writing, and posthumous publications, Mead has exercised a significant influence in 20th century social theory, among both philosophers and social scientists. In particular, Mead's theory of the emergence of mind and self out of the social process of significant communication has become the foundation of the symbolic interactionist school of sociology and social psychology.">
  • Social Theory "The human individual, then, is a member of a social organism, and his acts must be viewed in the context of social acts that involve other individuals. Society is not a collection of preexisting atomic individuals (as suggested, for example, by Hobbes, Locke, and Rousseau), but rather a processual whole within which individuals define themselves through participation in social acts."

A Centennial View Table of Contents Preface Introduction The University Of Chicago Faculty Life on the Quads The University and the City The Presidents of the University of Chicago Centennial Catalogues Home Mead's work moved easily from the most penetrating philosophical thinking to direct involvement with public discussion of education, social reform, and during World War I, American foreign policy. George Herbert Mead, "What Social Objects Must Psychology Presuppose," manuscript, 1909. Mead argued that the value of behavioral psychology was limited because it viewed humans as purely instinctual and reflexive beings. By ignoring the social dimension of human interaction, behaviorists had eliminated a critical factor in understanding the cognitive process. George Herbert Mead Philosophy
Like many of his colleagues at the University of Chicago, George Herbert Mead ranged widely in his intellectual interests. Unlike them, however, he published infrequently, restrained by what his friend John Dewey labeled "a certain diffidence" or by what Mead himself more plainly termed "my inability to write what I want." Still, Mead exerted a wide influence. Regarded highly by philosophers in his own lifetime, his work has more recently attracted the sympathetic attention of scholars in other fields. Raised in a conventional Christian home, Mead struggled during his years at Oberlin and Harvard with a loss of certainty as fundamental doubts about religion in general and Christianity in particular produced a personal spiritual crisis. He drifted in and out of a variety of occupations before settling at Harvard to study with Josiah Royce. There, Mead grew dissatisfied with the dominant speculative approach and its failure to engage the scientific and social problems that concerned him. Seeking a more realistically grounded philosophy, he left Harvard, eventually writing a dissertation at the University of Berlin. While in Germany, he not only studied philosophy, but also observed firsthand the growing Social-Democratic Labor movement, an experience that encouraged Mead's later involvement in American social reform.

It was the New Year's celebration, and Magdalen Newport Herbert had received two sonnets from her son, George. These were quite unlike those of William Shakespeare, who had published his Sonnets the year earlier. They were far more akin to the work of John Donne, who had dedicated his Holy Sonnets to Magdalen, his patron. They referred not to his mother's kindness, her beauty, or any other characteristic, nor did they mention the occasion for the sonnet, New Year's Day. Instead, George wrote that the love of God is a fitter subject for verse than the love of woman. It foreshadowed the aesthetic and vocational bent of a man who was to become one of England's finest metaphysical poets. In 1988, he defeated the Democratic Party's presidential candidate, Governor Michael S. Dukakis of Massachusetts. In 1992, Bush was defeated in his bid for a second term by Governor Bill Clinton of Arkansas, his Democratic opponent. Bush had served as vice president under President Ronald Reagan from 1981 to 1989. Bush became president at a time when many Americans were uncertain about their country's future. The federal government was badly in debt, the result of several years of budget deficits (shortages). In addition, the value of goods imported into the United States far exceeded the value of exports, leading many people to fear that the nation was becoming a second-rate economic power. In the 1988 election, Bush took advantage of his association with Reagan, who was an extremely popular president. Bush profited as well from the fact that relations between the United States and the Soviet Union had improved greatly during the Reagan presidency.

This morning during an extensive interview with Chris Wallace on FOX News Sunday , former President George Herbert Walker Bush teared up while recalling how nobly the American soldiers behaved towards prisoners in the 1991 Gulf War. Clearly concerned, interviewer Wallace quickly asked the ex-President a leading question to allow him to save face, but one wonders if Bush Sr. was internally conflicted by the marked difference between the way he handled his war and the way his son has botched the current one. Written in 2004; 1,110 words; 4 sources; MLA; Paper Summary: This paper discusses the life and works of Welsh poet, George Herbert. The paper presents his work, "Easter Wings", explaining that Herbert clearly outlines his lifelong struggle between secular and religious life and physical and spiritual life. The paper describes the time period when Herbert lived and contends that his poetry reflected this difficult era. From the Paper: "George Herbert (1593-1633) lived during a tumultuous time in the history of Wales; there was much corruption and confusion about the roles of government and change was a fact of every day life. Herbert's life is encompassed in a period of what one author of Welsh history calls Recovery, Reorientation, and Reformation, in Wales 1415-1642. (Williams iii) It is within this time that Herbert reflects on the best way to live and the best way to reenter his place of origin. " Keywords: temple religion secular
