The Religious Affiliation of Leading Science Fiction Author
Frank Herbert
Frank Herbert was raised as a Catholic but adopted Zen Buddhism as an adult. From: Kenneth C. Kaleta, David Lynch , Twayne Publishers: New York (1993), pages 81-82: Myth is an essential element of Dune [the classic science fiction novel that David Lynch adapted to a feature film]. Whatever the future setting of the world, it is most importantly the creation of a mythical universe, not merely our world in a distant future. Concepts of redemption, sin and punishment, and revenge are present in both Western and Eastern mythologies. Historically, it is possible to tie many of the elements of Dune to religious myths: the redeemer, the mystic conception, and the life-giving water. A blood feud writhing with turns of barbarism and deceit, floodwaters, and a battle against giant foes also color many world legends. The Mahabharata and Beowulf are echoed by the screenplay; Venetian altarpieces and Thai temple obes are evoked by the shots. If Dune is illuminated by studying any other science-fiction/fantasy films, a commparison of

Professor Willis E. McNelly recorded and typed an interview that he made with Frank Herbert and his wife Beverly Herbert in 1969 and sent it to Turkey in 1997. Professor McNelly has stated that we may use this text in any way we like. So we decided to retype the interview and publish it in sexek The original text is 46 pages but the 32 nd page is missed. Sorry for that inconvenience. California State College, Fullerton INTERVIEW BETWEEN: DATE OF TAPE: INTERVIEWEE: Frank Herbert (FH) and his wife, Beverly (BH) 3 February 1969 INTERVIEWER: Willis McNelly (WM) DATE OF TRANSCRIPTION: SUBJECT: Herbert’s science fiction novels, “Dune” and “Dune Messiah” February-April, 1970 WM: This tape recording is being made February 3. 1969, in the home of Frank Herbert in Fairfax, California. Frank and his wife Bev are sitting around including myself, Dr. Willis E. McNelly of Cal. State English Department, Fullerton, California; sitting around, talking about science fiction. Frank Herbert, as you all know, is the author of “Dune” and many other science fiction novels. Frank, I wonder if you’d tell us a little bit about the origins of “Dune”. You started a little earlier and you said you could trace the germinal idea? FH: Oh yes. The idea come came from an article (I was going to do an article, which I never did) about the control of sand dunes. What many people don’t realize is that the United States has pioneered in this, how to control the flow of sand dunes, and it started up here at Florence, Oregon. There is a pilot project up there of the U.S. Forest Service which has been so successful that it has been visited and copied by experts, related departments from Chile, Israel, India, Pakistan, Great Britain, several other countries…

Spice must flow.
Opening Statement
After receiving tons of rejection letters, Frank Herbert managed to see the publication of his landmark science fiction novel "Dune" in 1965. Set in a distant galaxy, "Dune" involved the political maneuverings of various Houses to gain control of the planet Arrakis, a barren wasteland that primarily contained sand. Arrakis was also the only planet in a galactic empire where a special kind of spice grew, and the commerce and travel of the entire empire revolved around the spice. He who controlled the spice, controlled the galaxy. "Dune" was more than a science fiction novel, however, as it was filled with modern allegory to our world's political landscape as well as containing philosophical and spiritual elements. "Dune" was as much a thought-provoking modern myth as it was a solid piece of science fiction. "Dune" managed to spawn plenty of sequels, many of which were produced after Herbert's death in 1986. In 1984, David Lynch took a hearty stab at bringing "Dune" to the big screen and ended up with mixed results. Relying on the narration of inner dialogue to tell the story

    Frank Herbert
Frank Patrick Herbert (October 8, 1920 February 11, 1986) was an American science fiction author. As an author Herbert was both critically acclaimed and a worldwide commercial success. He is best known for the novel Dune , the five other novels in the series that followed it, and the fictional universe these novels created. The Dune saga dealt with themes such as human survival and evolution, ecology, and the intersection of religion, politics and power. It is considered by many fans of the genre to be the best science fiction epic ever written, and is certainly one of the most popular. Dune was awarded the Nebula award in 1965 and shared the Hugo award in 1966. The film of the novel Dune, made by David Lynch, while flawed, remains a classic of the genre. Dune was made into a TV mini-series by the Sci Fi Channel (United States) in 2001. This was commercially successful and the Sci-Fi channel continued the Dune saga with a further mini-series in 2003 entitled Children of Dune. Other notable novels were

Frank Herbert's Dune is one of the greatest science fiction novels of all time. And, as famed sci fi writer Orson Scott Card points out , there are many parallels between the plot of Dune and the rise of radical Islamism in the real world: There was considerable irony in Dune's use of Arabic culture and language as the explicit basis of the "Fremen," the desert dwellers who become the source of Paul Atreides power and, when he unleashes them, the scourge of the universe. Herbert traces the roots of Fremen culture from world to world, and makes it clear that, while the specifics of Islamic belief are never laid out, the customs and culture of these people have been Muslim all along . . . The emotional core of the novel, then, comes from a T.E. Lawrence-like character, Paul Atreides, coming to dwell with and learning to live as an Arab Muslim, until he is able to lead them to victorious battle. Paul, being a non-Muslim, treats the idea of jihad as an abhorrent one; he long tries to resist the blood and horror of such a thing, though by the end of the book he has given up and realizes that the jihad will happen and cannot be prevented or even controlled.....

    Review by Nicholas Whyte
This is the tenth in a series of reviews of those pieces of written science fiction and fantasy which have won both the Hugo and Nebula awards. Dune won the very first Nebula award for Best Novel 1965 and shared the Hugo for Best Novel 1966 with Roger Zelazny's ...And Call Me Conrad (better known now as This Immortal ). Among sf fans it must be one of the best known books of the genre. With its successors, it has inspired several screen adaptations, a board game, computer games, many tribute websites and even has a relatively vigorous newsgroup. Readers of Locus have three times voted Dune as the best sf novel of all time. I considered writing a joint review of Dune and the next book on my list, Ender's Game . Both are coming-of-age stories of a Messiah figure, who turns out to be the end product of a carefully engineered breeding programme. Both deal heavily with war; both feature apparently incomprehensible and terrifying alien life-forms. Both novels pretty much established their author's reputation, and built a cult of fans who eagerly bought the many sequels (though in both cases the later volumes are generally agreed to be inferior). Both, indeed, are novelisations of stories originally published in Analog . However the two novels are so powerful individually that they deserve separate treatment. Dune is much the better of the two. It must have surely been at least partially an sf response to the challenge of J.R.R. Tolkien's

Abstract: This paper discusses why science fiction is useful in terms of theory, it provides a brief synopsis of Dune, talks about the political structure behind Frank Herbert’s Dune, and the implications of rights of people within government. In particular this paper hopes to look at three practical concepts of: 1) The separation of powers 2) The separation of church and state, or the lack of a clear religiosity test. 3) The role of meeting faction within faction.

Let me put this book into context for you. I had just finished reading Lord of the Rings, and if you've seen my Atlas Shrugged review, you'll notice that I'm in the mood for epics. Both Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged are extraordinary literary masterpieces, shaped by the minds of true masters of storytelling and experts of the written word. So maybe I came to Dune with my expectations too high. I'd been spoiled by the lofty hights that Ayn Rand and Tolkien managed to achieve. The story is good enough. It's well thought out and intreaguing enough to be the seed of an excellent book. But the way its written leaves a dull taste in my mouth. Kind of like drinking water after drinking wine.
