Dune is frequently acknowledged as one of the great works of science fiction, comparable only to J. R. R. Tolkien 's fantasy masterpiece The Lord of the Rings . Other notable works by Herbert include Whipping Star The Dosadi Experiment (1977), as well as his classic Destination Void (1966). In concert with Bill Ransom, he created three immensely popular follow-ups to Destination Void The Jesus Incident The Lazarus Effect , and Ascension Factor . Herbert is often credited with introducing ecology into science fiction, in the sense of complex and believable systems of flora, fauna, and climate, but his books are also noted for their interweaving of politics, religion, and psychology.

By Timothy O'Reilly
In the fall of 1977, when I was a couple of years out of college, I received an unexpected call from a friend, Dick Riley. He'd just landed a new job at a small publisher called Frederick Ungar, as the editor of a series of short critical monographs on detective and science-fiction writers. He was looking for authors, and as he knew I was fond of science fiction, he thought of me. Would I write a book about Frank Herbert, he wanted to know. [ More

Frank Herbert's Dune to be remade again
December 25th 2007 00:15 After the wild success of the Lord of the Rings , the studios are scratching their heads over how best to make the ching-kaching on Frank Herbert's legendary sci-fi series, Dune and its sequels.
Wait... haven't they done this? Well, yes.
Dune has been the subject of starry film eyes since the 70s, when Alejandro Jodorowsky was attached the project, envisioning a 10-hour movie. That would have been insane, but I think it probably would have done the novel justice.
The version most people are familiar with is the David Lynch film, released in 1984

Profiled by Galen Strickland Frank Patrick Herbert (1920-1986) - A native of Washington state, he was a reporter and editor on several West Coast newspapers before becoming a full-time writer of SF. He was never a prolific writer of short stories, publishing only about 20 in his entire career. I cannot recall if I ever encountered any of these; there is a collection from DAW Books, The Worlds of Frank Herbert , which I may have read at some time but I do not remember and don't have a copy now.
    The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction
states that he never made a significant impact with any work below novel length. Of course, what was eventually published as the novel Dune (1965) had been previously published as a series of shorter works originally known as "Dune World" and "Prophet of Dune," beginning with the December, 1963 issue of Analog . The first three novels in the Dune series - Dune Dune Messiah Children of Dune (1976) are all that I am sure that I read by Herbert. These were later followed by God Emperor of Dune Heretics of Dune (1984), and

Frank Herbert How often it is that the angry man rages denial of what his inner self is telling him. Frank Herbert If you think of yourselves as helpless and ineffectual, it is certain that you will create a despotic government to be your master. The wise despot, therefore, maintains among his subjects a popular sense that they are helpless and ineffectual. Frank Herbert It is a wise man that does know the contented man is never poor, whilst the discontented man is never rich.

    by Byron Merritt
"Your grandpa died last night," my mother said, her voice echoing through the phone.
It was February 12th, 1986 and Frank Herbert, the creator of Dune , had lost his battle the previous evening with pancreatic cancer, passing away suddenly at the University of Wisconsin Medical Center in Madison. I sat quietly listening to my mother who lived in Port Townsend, Washington at the time of her father's demise.
My first clear memory of my grandpa was when he lived in Port Townsend on Ivy Drive near a wooded cove surrounded by pines and water. It was June of 1972 and I was seven years old. A burly looking fellow with a scruffy beard, he wore a grey wool sweater and had a pipe made of cherry wood stuffed in his mouth with sweet-smelling smoke wafting up and around his head to form a crown of sorts as if by magic.

Respond to this Article Washington Monthly , October 2007 Why Is Bob Herbert Boring?
The perils of punditry for the powerless
By T. A. Frank The first thing you need to know about New York Times In the late 1990s, when the rest of us were being entertained by news of Clintonian indiscretions, Herbert had his eye elsewhere: "A level of terror unimaginable to most Americans has been the rule in most of Afghanistan since the Taliban took power a few years ago." After the election of 2000, when pundits were asserting that Bush would have to govern from the center, Herbert was warning that Bush was "the incredible shrinking front man of the G.O.P." and that the heart of the party could be found in "Tom DeLay and his crowd." And then there's Bob Herbert's main focus. He reports on the disadvantaged and disenfranchised of America, about whom he will tell you things you didn't expect. I doubt you knew that "nearly half of full-time private sector workers in the U.S. get no paid sick days. None." And have you ever been at a dinner where the tab came to more than $125 a person? According to Herbert, high school kids in Brooklyn can't believe this happens. "How much can you eat?" asked one. I know I experienced a salutary wince when I read that. So let's recap: Bob Herbert is a sensible person who usually assesses things more accurately than his colleagues, regularly hits the streets to report on the world outside, shines a light on people and issues that deserve far more attention than they usually get, and tells you things you really ought to know but don't. But here's the catch: you don't read Bob Herbert. Or, if you say you do, I don't believe you.

Vonda McIntyre s poignant tribute to sf master frank herbert.
    http://www.infinityplus.co.uk/nonfiction/frankh.htm
The Frank Herbert Memorial Sunset Watch
a feature by Vonda N McIntyre Some years ago, Frank Herbert and Dave Hartwell and I planned to go out for sushi in Seattle. But the sushi restaurant faces south, and as we got together it became obvious that the sunset was going to be spectacular. We changed plans in midstride and went out along the ship canal, past the Ballard Locks to a row of west-facing restaurants at Shilshole. I don't remember why we chose the aggressively mediocre restaurant instead of one of the really good restaurants along that stretch (Anthony's is my favorite), but at least they were perfectly willing to let us sit at the window table for a couple of hours, talking and laughing and gossiping and drinking wine and watching the amazing sunset of orange and purple and red and fluorescent yellow. I didn't know that I'd never see Frank again. Later that year he was diagnosed with cancer. I didn't believe it would take him he thought he would beat it, and Frank had an amazing energy and drive and humor that usually led him right to what he wanted. (He always said that the company that made Dune had filmed enough footage for a really good fifteen-hour miniseries; and I believe if he'd lived, he'd've persuaded them to re-edit it to that form.)

More from Mother Earth Living SCIENCE FICTION'S "YELLOW JOURNALIST" IS A HOMESTEADING "TECHNOPEASANT" By profession, Frank Herbert is a science fiction author . . . and quite a successful one at that. Indeed, many of his novels are regarded as classics in the field. What's more, a major film studio is well into a yearslong project to convert Frank's Dune tales into a feature-length motion picture. Of course, Herbert has written other distinguished fiction as well, but a list of his literary achievements would hardly serve to sum up this unique individual. The Washington State author staunchly maintains that any person's life should consist of much more than his or her work role (even if that role is a prominent one) . . . so he puts a lot of energy into his "nonprofessional" time. In keeping with his beliefs, Frank's a devoted father, spouse, and family man. He's also an avid alternative energy experimenter who's created his own solar collector, windplant, and methane fuel generator . . . all on an Olympic Peninsula homestead.
