Frank (Patrick) Herbert (1920-1986) American science-fiction writer, who became famous with his ecological novel DUNE (1965), set in a world of giant sandworms. The epic adventure won the first Nebula for Best Novel, shared the Hugo, and gained a cult status among science fiction readers. Herbert's bestseller was followed by five sequels. Often Herbert's stories dealt with great cycles of development, environmental as well as cultural. "Why do you test for humans?" he asked.
"To set you free."
"Free?"
"Once men turned their thinking over to machines in hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them."
"Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a man's mind," Paul quoted.

In fact, I believe attempts to create some abstract equalization create a morass of injustices that rebound on the equalizers. Equal justice and equal opportunity are ideals we should seek, but we should recognize that humans administer the ideals and that humans do not have equal ability.

One of the most psychologically engrossing novels in the genre, Dune tells the tale of a far-flung future, when two ruling families, House Atreides and House Harkonnen, feud over rights to the desert planet Arrakis. Home to the mighty sandworms, Arrakis, or as the native fremen call it, Dune, is where melange , the mystical spice that facilitates the folding of space (warp), possible. The story follows young Paul Atreides who, after various harrowing encounters with Bene Gesserit witches, treacherous doctors, Harkonnen troops, and majestic sandworms, must challenge Feyd Rautha, heir of Harkonnen to a duel for the spiceworld. Along the way, Paul takes on many names, including Muadib and the prophesied Kwitsach haderach . I'm not a fan of the sequels, but

Scholarship Program "Freedom and peace are not inherent virtues; they are acquired social conditions which must be planned and cultivated to prosper and live. Our fine forbears could not build institutions which would guarantee them to us. Their progeny, we must do our part ..." Herbert Lewis Frank The Association to Unite the Democracies (AUD) is the beneficiary of the Mayme and Herbert Frank Educational Trust, established in 1989 to support the study of international integration and federalism at the graduate level. Since 1989, the Frank Educational Fund (FEF) has managed and distributed those funds to deserving students. Today, the Ashburn Institute is administering scholarship grants supported by AUD's Mayme and Herbert Frank Educational Trust. Why the Frank Fund? Who can apply? Example of past projects How are scholarships awarded? ... Application Process WHY THE FRANK FUND? The study of international integration and federalism has gained attention throughout the world due to the proliferation of international organizations (NATO, NAFTA, WTO, IMF, World Bank) and the development of the European Union. The Ashburn Institute and the Association to Unite the Democracies, as advocates of a democratic international federation, believe strongly in the importance of supporting these studies and contributing to the evolution of this new international order. Since 1940, AUD and more recently the Ashburn Institute have been action-oriented organizations, often appealing to the highest ranks of power in the world's democracies for consideration of the federal union proposal. Yet we also recognize that in order to gain widespread appreciation of this idea, a sociological shift in attitudes will have to accompany any political action. This is why the need for education and study in this topic is so vitally important. By supporting the leaders of the future and providing them a link to the grassroots movement for federal union, we create a nexus merging the academic environment with the activist environment.

These books are Dune, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune, and Chapterhouse: Dune. In 1984, Director David Lynch directed a big budget film adaptation of these novels. Though that film was a box office bomb, it too has a wide cult following. The film information provided here also covers the span of several years spent trying to produce the film. This includes works of Alexandro Jodorowsky and H.R. Giger. Several games have been created in recognition of Dune's popularity, including the popular Dune II by Westwood (recently updated as Dune 2000).
