Phillip Sharp from MIT gave the lecture, entitled “RNA splicing and RNA interference.” John Adelman , who worked in Herbert’s lab, presented an obituary written for the National Academy of Sciences in honor of Herbert’s achievements. The 2004 lecture, “The atomic basis for selective ion conduction in potassium channels,” was presented by Rod MacKinnon , professor and HHMI investigator at Rockefeller University. Sharp and MacKinnon were both Nobel prize recipients. The 2006 Herbert Memorial Lecture will be held on March 13, 2006 in Vollum M1441 at 12:00. For more details, click here. In this work Herbert argued that the universality of human belief in the existence of God and the necessity of worship and repentance is indicative of an a priori truth that has been apprehended by reason. This antiempirical theory of knowledge is one of the earliest formulations of the philosophy of Deism; it earned Herbert the appellation father of English Deism. His book of poems and an autobiography were discovered and published in 1764 by the British writer Horace Walpole.
