Patrick Henry The American political leader Patrick Henry was the most celebrated orator of the American Revolution. He was born on May 29, 1736, in Hanover County, Virginia. Henry failed as both a storekeeper and a farmer before being admitted to the Virginia bar in 1760. However, he won fame in 1763 after his impassioned pleading in the Parsons' Cause, a case in which he defended the right of the colony to fix the price of the tobacco in which the clergy were paid, despite a contrary ruling from London. When Henry entered the House of Burgesses in 1765, he and Richard Henry Lee successfully compelled the entrenched oligarchy to share power with them. Henry's effectiveness as an orator gave him a commanding influence in the legislature throughout his life. After the passage of the Stamp Act (1765) he introduced a set of radical resolutions denouncing the British Parliament's usurpation of powers vested in the colonial legislature, which alone had the power to tax. He supported the resolves in a speech ending "Caesar had his BrutusCharles the first his Cromwelland George IIImay he profit from their example." Widely circulated throughout the colonies, the resolves made Henry famous. Henry was the focal point of Virginia's opposition to British policy. When the royal governor, Lord Dunmore, dissolved the Virginia legislature after the closing of the port of Boston in 1774, Henry organized a rump session of the legislature, which met in the Raleigh Tavern in Williamsburg. It issued an invitation to the other colonies to send delegates to a

He still makes it into a book on American history here and there primarily because he was without a doubt one of the greatest (if not the greatest) orator of his generation, and when the American revolution became imminent in the 1770’s he was among those who had the greatest grasp of when the conflict would come and what it would bring. "The war is actually begun! The next gale that sweeps from the north will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms Let it come. I repeat, Sir, Let it come Is life so dear or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!" In 1775, Patrick Henry was not simply attempting to arouse the passions of his fellow Virginians. He was suggesting a practical course of action: arming the population of Virginia against the troops of the British Crown. By late April he was making good on his own exhortations, and following the British seizure of a cache of arms owned by the Virginia militia, Henry himself led a militia company in a raid on the British capturing British funds as compensation for the theft of the arms. The governor of Virginia declared Henry an outlaw, and he went into hiding as a champion of the Revolution.

He attended a local school for only a short time and was tutored by his father, John Henry, a surveyor and county justice. As a young man, Henry entered the world of commerce, but he proved to be a poor businessman: He failed as a storekeeper and as a farmer within the space of seven years. Henry married Sarah Shelton in 1756 and turned his attention to the study of law. He received his license to practice law in 1760 and soon acquired a large country clientele. By 1770 Henry was specializing in appeals before the Virginia General Court. His skill in criminal cases was perhaps unsurpassed by any other American lawyer of the period.

The proposed measures would have "incorporated" the Episcopal clergy, and would have provided financial support to the church through tax levies. These bills were ultimately defeated, due largely to the efforts of James Madison and some of his allies. Following the Boston Tea Party, Dec. 16, 1773, in which American Colonists dumped 342 containers of tea into the Boston harbor, the British Parliament enacted a series of Acts in response to the rebellion in Massachusetts. In May of 1774, General Thomas Gage, commander of all British military forces in the colonies, arrived in Boston, followed by the arrival of four regiments of British troops. The First Continental Congress met in the fall of 1774 in Philadelphia with 56 American delegates, representing every colony, except Georgia. On September 17, the Congress declared its opposition to the repressive Acts of Parliament, saying they are "not to be obeyed," and also promoted the formation of local militia units. Thus economic and military tensions between the colonists and the British escalated. In February of 1775, a provincial congress was held in Massachusetts during which John Hancock and Joseph Warren began defensive preparations for a state of war. The English Parliament then declared Massachusetts to be in a state of rebellion. On March 23, in Virginia, the largest colony in America, a meeting of the colony's delegates was held in St. John's church in Richmond. Resolutions were presented by Patrick Henry putting the colony of Virginia "into a posture of defense...embodying, arming, and disciplining such a number of men as may be sufficient for that purpose." Before the vote was taken on his resolutions, Henry delivered the speech below, imploring the delegates to vote in favor.
