O. Henry (William Sidney Porter)
O. Henry is the pen name of William Sidney Porter, one of America's most popular writers of short stories. He was born near Greensboro in 1862. When he was only three, his mother died and he was left in the care of his father, a doctor. He grew up under the watchful eye of his Aunt Lina Porter, who conducted a private school attended by Will and the other children of the neighborhood. It was all the educatio he ever had. Soon he was working in an uncle's drug store, and eventually he became a registered pharmacist. But life in the village of Greensboro was humdrum, and when he received an invitation to go to Texas he accepted. At nineteen he was tramping about a huge ranch operated by some friends from North Carolina. In spite of his shy nature, he always had friends. In Austin he settled down as a bank clerk and was married. There was one daughter. At odd moments he ventured a humorous weekly newspaper, The Rolling Stone , but it was never successful. Just how it all happened is not quite clear, but at this time his accounts at the bank were found to be unbalanced and he was charged with embezzlement. To escape trial he sailed to Honduras. His wife's tuberculosis became worse; and when he returned some months later, he stood trial and was sent to the Ohio Penitentiary. There he began writing in earnest and sold some stories. On his release, he resolved to start life anew, even to changing his name. Many stories are told of why he chose O. Henry (see Gerald Langforth's biography

The Gift of the Magi
by O. Henry The Gift of the Magi is an O. Henry short story in which a young couple are very much in love with each other but can barely afford their one-room apartment. For Christmas, they each make a sacrifice to purchase a gift for the other, with ironic results. The moral of the story is that physical possessions, however valuable they may be, are of little value in the grand scheme of things. The true unselfish love that the characters, Jim and Della, share is greater than their possessions. O. Henry ends the story by clarifying the metaphor between the characters in the story, Della and James (or Jim), and the Biblical Magi. The Gift of the Magi

After her husband's death Catherine married John Ward, and Henry, Cornelius and their brother Thomas were raised by their uncle, William Browne (1762-1833), of County Galway and Calcutta. In February 1814, 'being about to establish his family at Sydney New South Wales', Browne received permission 'to take with him to Bengal a labourer named Harry O'Brien for the purpose of taking charge of a quantity of rice and other articles which he may wish to send to New South Wales'. He then made arrangements for his sister, Catherine Ward, and her family to journey to New South Wales in the Marquis of Wellington . They arrived at Sydney in January 1815 and settled on a farm Browne had already acquired. Three months later Henry O'Brien arrived from India with letters of introduction to Governor Macquarie , who placed the family and their servants on the stores. O. Henry is one of the most famous American short story writers. O. Henry’s real name was William Sydney Porter and he was born in Greensboro, North Carolina on September 11, 1862.
At age of 20 (1882) he moved to Texas, where he had various jobs.
He married Athol Estes in 1887; they had a son and a daughter. His wife died from tuberculosis in 1897. In 1894 while working for First National Bank in Austin, Porter was accused of stealing $4000. He went to prison in Columbus, Ohio for 3 years eventually. While in prison Porter first started to write short stories and it’s believed that he has found his writer’s pseudonym there. After Porter was released from the prison in 1901, he changed his name to O. Henry and moved to New York in 1902. From December 1903 to January 1906 o. Henry wrote a story a week for the New York World magazine, and published several short stories in other magazines. O. Henry’s short stories are famous for their surprise endings and humor.

REFERENCE LINKS PRINT EMAIL Henry, O. Henry, O. (1862-1910), was the pen name of an American story writer, William Sydney Porter. In most of his nearly 300 works of fiction, O. Henry showed his mastery of mechanical plots, which build up to sharp, unexpected endings, as in "The Gift of the Magi" (1905). Most of O. Henry's stories are sentimental rather than psychologically deep. Yet his sympathy for human weaknesses and the naturalness of his characters make his stories appealing. O. Henry wrote in the language of the common people.

Henry Flipper, the son of slaves, was born in Thomasville, Georgia, on 21st March, 1856. He became the first African American to graduate from West Point . On 15th June, 1877, Flipper was commissioned as second lieutenant of the 10th Cavalry. Highly respected by the Native Americans these men were called Buffalo Soldiers because their short curly hair resembled that of the buffalo . His book, The Colored Cadet at West Point , appeared in 1878. Flipper served under Captain Nicholas Nolan at Fort Still. He took part in the Indian Wars and fought against Victorio and the Apache in 1880. Colonel Benjamin Grierson wrote that "He came under my immediate command during the campaigns against Victorio's band of hostile Indians, and from personal observation, I can testify to his efficiency and gallantry in the field." After being transferred to Fort Davis he became quartermaster. When Colonel William Rufus Shafter became commanding officer of Fort Davis in 1881, he immediately sacked Flipper as quartermaster. Flipper suspected what he later called a systematic plan of persecution, and is said to have been warned by civilians at the post of a plot by white officers to force him from the army. The following year, when he discovered post funds missing from his quarters, he attempted to conceal the loss until he could find or replace the money. When Shafter learned of the discrepancy, he immediately filed charges against him. Flipper was accused of embezzling $3,791.77 from commissary funds. Flipper denied the charge and claimed that he had been framed by his fellow officers, who hated him because he was African American. A court-martial found him not guilty of embezzlement but on 30th June, 1882, convicted him of conduct unbecoming an officer and ordered him dismissed from the Army.
